Half an hour later, Seeing that the rain outside was getting heavier, Gu Yihan had no choice but to knock on the door of a military family, hoping to borrow an umbrella.
Knock, knock, knock.
Gu Yihan pounded on the door with all her strength and called out loudly, “Is anyone home? Can you hear me?”
The rain outside was so heavy that she worried the people inside might not hear her, so she continued knocking for quite a while.
Wang Er’ya always sensed that there was a sound at the door. She put down the sweater she was knitting and stood up, glancing at her mother-in-law sitting on a stool repairing shoe soles.
She asked hesitantly, “Mother-in-law, did you hear someone knocking?”
Commander Wen’s mother didn’t even lift her head and replied perfunctorily, “With such heavy rain outside, who would be knocking at our door?”
“Even when it’s not raining, nobody ever comes to visit us. Let alone on a rainy day.”
Wang Er’ya thought about it and was about to pick up her knitting again when she heard the door knocking grow louder.
This time she really heard it—someone was knocking on their door.
She walked straight out of the living room, grabbed the umbrella from the side of the door, ran into the yard, and opened the door.
Seeing Gu Yihan standing there looking soaked and miserable, she hurriedly asked, “Madam Lu, why are you at our door?”
Gu Yihan breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing Wang Er’ya.
Smiling, she said, “It suddenly started raining on the way back, and I didn’t bring an umbrella. I wanted to borrow one from you.”
Actually, Gu Yihan had umbrellas in her spatial pocket, but they weren’t from this era—she couldn’t use them!
Wang Er’ya grabbed Gu Yihan’s arm and led her inside, cheerfully saying, “Come in quickly. I’ll get you an umbrella and a raincoat.”
“With such heavy rain, just an umbrella isn’t enough. You’ll need a raincoat too, otherwise your clothes will get soaked.”
Wang Er’ya put the umbrella aside by the door, took Gu Yihan by the hand, and pushed open the living room door. She called out, “Mother-in-law, where’s our raincoat?”
Commander Wen’s mother looked up and saw Wang Er’ya holding Gu Yihan’s hand. She set aside her work and said, “The raincoat… I think it’s in my cabinet. Sit for a while; I’ll go look for it.”
After saying that, she turned and went back to the bedroom to find the raincoat.
Wang Er’ya pulled over a stool and gestured for Gu Yihan to sit.
She laughed and said, “You’re the first one to come to our house.”
“The other military wives don’t like to hang out with me,” Gu Yihan replied.
“They’re always murmuring that I used improper means to marry my man, secretly saying that forced melons aren’t sweet.”
Wang Er’ya chuckled, “They wouldn’t know until they try it. But I’ve tried it—it’s pretty sweet.”
Gu Yihan couldn’t help but laugh, and the sense of unfamiliarity between them vanished instantly.
When Commander Wen’s mother returned with the raincoat, she handed it to Gu Yihan and said apologetically, “Don’t mind that it’s a bit damp; it’s been stored for a while.”
Gu Yihan smiled, took the raincoat, and said, “Thank you so much. Otherwise, I really wouldn’t know how long I’d have had to wait.”
She put on the raincoat, opened the umbrella, and bid farewell to Wang Er’ya and the others.
She walked quickly through the rain, but even with the umbrella, Wang Er’ya had been right to think ahead—this downpour was so heavy that the umbrella couldn’t completely block the rain driven by the wind.
“Honey? Is that you?” Lu Huailin’s anxious voice reached Gu Yihan’s ears.
She saw a figure holding an umbrella approaching her.
Gu Yihan quickly called out, “I’m here!”
Lu Huailin ran up to her. Seeing that she was wearing the raincoat and holding the umbrella, and hadn’t gotten wet—just her shoes were soaked—he finally relaxed.
He handed her the umbrella and said, “Take the umbrella. I’ll carry you home.”
Gu Yihan folded her umbrella and took Lu Huailin’s instead, saying, “You’ll get your clothes wet.”
Lu Huailin didn’t reply. He simply picked her up and strode toward home.
Once they got home and finished washing up, it was already very late.
Lu Huailin had prepared ginger tea and handed it to Gu Yihan, suggesting, “Honey, next time you go somewhere, leave a note on the table for me.”
“That way, I won’t have to wonder where to find you like today.”
Gu Yihan sipped the ginger tea, feeling warm inside, and smiled, replying, “Okay.”
