Mother Shen trembled with rage, completely disregarding the image she had maintained for years.
She yelled at Gu Yihan, “Get out! People like you, with no manners, are not welcome in this family!”
“Who are you calling ill-mannered?” Lu Huailin’s deep, cold voice sounded.
He strode over to Gu Yihan and took her hand.
His sharp gaze swept across the group of women in the room before finally landing on Mother Shen.
Mother Shen’s eyes flickered as she saw Lu Huailin holding Gu Yihan’s hand.
She forced a smile and addressed the two of them, “Xiao Lu, so this is your wife! Shan Yue didn’t even give me a heads-up—what a misunderstanding.”
Mother Shen gestured for Lu Huailin, “Come sit down. This isn’t the first time meeting Xiao Han, but I didn’t expect her to have such a good temperament.”
Yu Shanyue heard Mother Shen shift the responsibility onto her but didn’t explain; after all, it was her wedding day and she didn’t want a scene.
Lu Huailin looked at Gu Yihan with gentle eyes. “If you’re not used to it here, we can go home.”
Gu Yihan didn’t answer immediately; instead, she asked, “Why did you come over?”
Ignoring the looks from others, Lu Huailin leaned close to her ear and whispered, “I didn’t trust leaving you alone, so I came to check on you. I’m usually so busy, and it’s rare that we both have a break. I want to watch over you every moment I can.”
Gu Yihan felt a warm satisfaction in her heart and gave Lu Huailin a playful glare.
After finishing their meal, Gu Yihan and Lu Huailin informed Shen Yujie and Yu Shanyue, then returned home.
Once everyone had left the dining area, the Shen family of four gathered for a family meeting.
Mother Shen looked at Yu Shanyue and said, “Shanyue, since Yujie is working in Kun City…”
“You should stay as well. Newlyweds should live together long-term.”
Seeing Shen Yujie keeping his head down without objecting, Yu Shanyue gladly responded, “Thank you, Mom. I’ll take good care of Yujie.”
Mother Shen nodded in satisfaction, then disdainfully added, “But stay away from that Lu Huailin’s wife in the future.”
“What’s the matter? Did Lu Huailin’s wife offend you?” Father Shen asked, puzzled, looking at his wife.
Before Mother Shen could speak, Yu Shanyue explained, “Mom had a conflict with Gu Yihan today.”
She recounted the entire conflict between them in detail.
Father Shen’s face darkened as he glared at Mother Shen. “Ignorant! No matter how bad a wife Lu Huailin could find, she’s still better than the son you gave birth to.”
Yu Shanyue: “…”
“Dad, it’s Mom’s problem, why drag me into this?” Shen Yujie said unhappily.
Father Shen sneered at Mother Shen and Shen Yujie, “If you follow that little birdbrain of your mother’s, who else can you blame? You look down on her, yet look at Lu Huailin—so young and already a regiment commander. If not for age restrictions, he would have been promoted long ago.”
Shen Yujie suddenly stood up and shouted at his father, “Lu Huailin married a rural girl, and even his parents didn’t oppose it! But when it comes to me, you refuse. If you hadn’t been so stubborn, Qiao Shuhui and I would have married already; she wouldn’t have ended up marrying…”
Slap! Father Shen slapped Shen Yujie across the face in fury.
“For the sake of a pretentious woman, you ruin your own future! Isn’t that enough? Do you want to ruin this family too?”
Shen Yujie said nothing, kicked the chair away, and stormed out slamming the door.
Mother Shen looked embarrassed. She took Yu Shanyue’s hand and said, “Shanyue, don’t worry, that woman is married now. She won’t interfere with you and Yujie’s marriage. I…”
“Shut up! Yujie has been spoiled by you. Do you want your daughter-in-law to be the same?” Father Shen cut her off angrily.
Turning to Yu Shanyue, Father Shen said, “Shanyue, I leave Yujie in your hands. If he doesn’t listen, hit him. One round doesn’t work? Then two.”
Yu Shanyue’s lips curved slightly. She assured Father Shen, “Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll follow your advice.”
…
After returning home, Gu Yihan lay on the wooden sofa and complained to Lu Huailin, “It’s such a pity Yu Shanyue married Shen Yujie. That man is impossible—who knows what trouble he’ll cause later?”
Lu Huailin came to her side, slipped his arms under hers, and lifted her up.
Gu Yihan’s feet dangled in the air, and frightened, she wrapped her arms around his neck, patting his back. “What are you doing?”
Lu Huailin sat down on the sofa, placing Gu Yihan on his lap, and finally spoke: “Why do you keep worrying about other people? But don’t worry, Yu Shanyue won’t lose out. Even three Shen Yujies can’t beat her.”
Gu Yihan’s eyes sparkled as she looked at him. “You know her?”
Lu Huailin held her waist and patiently explained, “Yes, we know each other. We grew up in the same compound. Yu Shanyue wanted to join the army, but her family didn’t agree. She tried to get a job arranged, but got reported. She married Shen Yujie only to avoid going to the countryside as a sent-down youth.”
Gu Yihan sighed, “That’s really unfair to Yu Shanyue. A flower planted on a pile of dung.”
The Next Day, Gu Yihan stretched, squinting at the clock under her pillow—10 a.m.
She quickly got up. Since it was a holiday, she wanted to visit Zhao Ju’s family. She hadn’t been since promising Captain Shi.
After breakfast, she saw the time: almost 11 a.m. She decided to go in the afternoon and went out for a stroll first.
Just a short walk in the residential area, she ran into several military wives chatting together.
Aunt Chen immediately handed her a small stool. “Xiao Han, sit for a bit. You usually work, so it’s rare to see you.”
Gu Yihan didn’t hesitate and sat down.
There were several military wives, but she only knew Aunt Chen and Wen Juan.
Aunt Chen patted Gu Yihan’s arm: “Xiao Han, did you hear? Qiao Shuhui has been kicked out of the residential compound.”
Gu Yihan was taken aback and thought to herself, “The military leadership acts so fast? Shen Yujie’s wedding was yesterday, and today they’ve already kicked Qiao Shuhui out?”
Seeing Gu Yihan silent, Aunt Chen thought she didn’t believe her.
Pointing to Wen Juan, she said, “If you don’t believe me, ask Wen Juan—they live nearby.”
Wen Juan didn’t hide anything and explained: “Captain Lin has already reclaimed the apartment. Since he’s divorced now, he’s single and can’t stay there.”
Another military wife, whom Gu Yihan didn’t know, sighed, “They were only married a few months, and now divorced just like that.”
Aunt Chen echoed, “Right? And Qiao Shuhui was even pregnant. They just said they didn’t want her, so she’s out.”
A small voice asked, “Do you think it’s possible the child isn’t Captain Lin’s?”
Listening to their hushed whispers and speculation, Gu Yihan found it odd that no one asked her—she was an eyewitness, after all.
