Gu Yihan had been having the same dream for several months in a row.

In the dream, there was a sallow, thin woman wearing a bulky gray maternity outfit.

She looked like someone from the era the orphanage granny used to talk about—those days when people never had enough to eat.

During the day, while at work, Gu Yihan often found herself distracted. She always felt uneasy. She reached up and touched the jade pendant around her neck.

This pendant had already been hanging around her neck when the orphanage director had found her.

For twenty-three years, she had never taken it off.

When she was eighteen, she once accidentally cut her finger and touched the pendant with her blood. That was when she discovered the space inside it.

The space inside the jade pendant wasn’t very big—only about fifty square meters. It could preserve and store items, but in modern society, it wasn’t very useful.

However, since she had read quite a few novels, she couldn’t help worrying that she might transmigrate to that impoverished era.

Over the past few days, Gu Yihan had organized her savings.

She was an orphan. After entering university, she had taken out student loans. As a result, she was either working part-time or going to class every day.

After finally graduating, she had only worked for one year and hadn’t saved much—about 80,000 yuan.

Looking at her savings, she hesitated for a while before deciding to spend it all on supplies.

Maybe she was overthinking it. But what if she really did transmigrate?

Over the next few days, Gu Yihan took a bus to Fujin City in Jiamusi, Heilongjiang Province. She first found an agent who rented short-term warehouses and rented one for fifteen days.

She also asked where she could find a shop that specialized in grinding flour and rice.

The agent kindly gave her directions.

Following them, she entered a shop and saw a middle-aged woman wearing a white coat and a mask.

Gu Yihan asked, “Auntie, do you sell rice and grind it on the spot?”

Speaking in a strong northeastern accent, the woman replied, “Yes. What do you want?”

Gu Yihan said, “I want 10,000 jin of rice, 10,000 jin of wheat, and 10,000 jin of corn. Can you grind all of it?”

The woman nodded. “Sure. Do you want the husks and bran too?”

Smiling, Gu Yihan replied, “Yes, I want all of them. Please calculate the price.”

The woman happily said, “Rice is 1.7 yuan per jin, wheat is 1.53, corn is 1.12. Total: 43,500 yuan.”

Watching her calculate so quickly, Gu Yihan felt her heart ache with pain—it was really expensive.

“Just give me 43,000. Forget the extra 500. Come again next time!” the woman said with a smile.

Gu Yihan paid the deposit, left the address, and agreed to pay the rest when the goods arrived.

After leaving, she rushed to the wholesale market.

She had less than 40,000 yuan left and had to be careful.

She bought eight barrels of cooking oil (50 jin each), two boxes of salt, 500 jin of pork, 400 jin of mutton, and 1,000 jin of eggs.

After that, she only had 24,000 yuan left.

There were still many things she hadn’t bought.

The money clearly wasn’t enough, but she had no other choice. She decided to prioritize necessities first.

Thinking of the pregnant woman in her dreams, she also bought baby formula.

Then she went to a supermarket and bought:

  • 10 boxes of sanitary pads
  • 10 sets of skincare products
  • 10 boxes of milk powder
  • 2 baby bottles
  • 1,000 jin of brown sugar
  • 2 cotton quilts (10 jin each)

She also pre-ordered 1,000 buns and 1,000 steamed rolls from a breakfast shop.

By the time she finished, she had almost spent all her money.

Later, the woman from the mill called and said the goods had arrived.

Gu Yihan hurried to the warehouse, paid the remaining balance, and after they left, stored everything in her space.

A few days passed.

She no longer had strange dreams and felt no discomfort. She thought she might have been mistaken.

That night, she went to bed early.

When she became conscious again, she felt herself wrapped in a dark, comfortable space.

She tried every day to open her eyes and see the outside world, but she couldn’t. Sleepiness always overwhelmed her.

As time passed, she stayed awake longer and longer.

She realized she had been reborn and hadn’t been born yet.

During her waking moments, she learned about her new family.

Her mother was Liu Zhaodi, twenty-five years old. She had already given birth to two daughters—one was seven, the other five.

Her father was Zhou Jianguo, twenty-eight.

Her grandfather had died when her father was young, so her grandmother had raised him alone.

Because of this, her grandmother was very domineering.

She had said that if this baby was another girl, her father should divorce her mother.

Gu Yihan could only stay awake for short periods. Whenever she was conscious, she listened carefully, trying to find out what year it was.

One day, she heard:

Liu Zhaodi: “Jianguo, do you think this one is a son?”

Zhou Jianguo turned over. “How would I know? I can’t see inside your belly.”

“It must be a son,” Liu Zhaodi said resentfully. “I’ve already had two money-losing girls. It’s my turn now.”

Annoyed, Zhou Jianguo replied, “Mom said if you don’t give birth to a son, you’ll go back to your parents’ home.”

Liu Zhaodi’s face turned pale. “Zhou Jianguo, have you no conscience? I gave birth to your children, and you want to send me away?”

He sat up and glared at her. “Talk about that after you give me a son. All you’ve had are girls. How dare you say that?”

“Go to sleep. Don’t make me hit you.”

With that, he lay down and started snoring.

Liu Zhaodi could only cry silently. “This one must be a son…”

Hearing the quarrel stop, Gu Yihan sighed inwardly.

She knew very well whether she was a boy or a girl.

They were bound to be disappointed.

Days passed quickly in a blur of sleep and wakefulness.

One day, just as she was drifting off, she heard Liu Zhaodi speak: “Sister Cuihua, are you bringing food to your husband?”

Zhang Cuihua replied, “No, it’s too hot. I’m just bringing him some water.”

“Oh?” Liu Zhaodi said. “Why is your belly so much smaller than mine? Weren’t we about the same time?”

Zhang Cuihua just smiled and said nothing.

Warmly, Liu Zhaodi pulled her inside. “Come in and rest. It’s too hot outside.”

Before Zhang Cuihua could react, she was dragged into the yard.

Gu Yihan felt strange.

She knew her mother in this life wasn’t usually so warm-hearted. What was she up to?

After some idle chatting, Zhang Cuihua stood up. “I should go home and cook. We’ll chat another time.”

Liu Zhaodi smiled. “Alright.”

As Zhang Cuihua walked out into the yard, a small stone suddenly rolled under her feet.

She didn’t notice it.

She stepped on it—and fell heavily to the ground.
