Chen Jinfeng paused mid-sentence and turned her gaze toward the old nanny.
“In this old servant’s opinion, this matter has nothing to do with Second Miss.”
The old nanny lowered her head, her voice calm and neither servile nor overbearing.
The old nanny was Chen Jinfeng’s trusted confidante. Now, with outsiders present, her own confidante was actually speaking up for Feng Mingyue.
Chen Jinfeng felt utterly humiliated. The anger in her heart surged upward as she gritted her teeth and snapped, “You’re speaking for that little slut?”
The old nanny acted as though she hadn’t noticed Chen Jinfeng’s anger and spoke as steadily as before.
“Has Madam forgotten? After your afternoon nap, you went to the garden for a walk and happened to see Second Miss feeding the goldfish by the pond.”
Being reminded of it, Chen Jinfeng recalled the incident.
“Mm… What exactly are you trying to say?”
The old nanny continued, “Second Miss must have been troubled by something, which is why she went to feed the goldfish by the pond. In this old servant’s opinion, instead of standing here making guesses, it would be better to call someone over, break open the door, and ask Third Miss directly. Then everything will become clear.”
After pondering for a moment, Chen Jinfeng agreed with her suggestion.
“Fine!”
“We’ll do as you say.”
“Yes.”
After receiving permission, the old nanny turned to call people over to break down the door.
Unexpectedly, just as she turned around, the tightly shut door creaked open on its own.
A gap about the width of a palm appeared.
Soon after, Feng Yunxiao’s muffled voice came from inside.
“Mother, come in alone.”
Chen Jinfeng froze for a moment and glanced toward the old nanny.
Only after seeing the old nanny nod at her did she respond, “Alright.”
Chen Jinfeng walked into the room and nearly stepped on the shards scattered across the floor.
After hurriedly avoiding them, she looked at the fragments all over the ground, her heart aching with pain.
Who knew how many porcelain vases had been smashed.
Her eyes widened like copper bells, filled with disbelief.
After a long while, she looked toward Feng Yunxiao, who was sitting in a chair.
“Have you gone mad?”
Feng Yunxiao: ???
“If you’re not crazy, then why did you smash so many porcelain vases? Do you know how much those cost?”
Feng Yunxiao had locked herself in her room all afternoon, thinking that when her mother arrived, she could finally pour out her grievances.
Who would’ve thought that before she even had the chance to complain, her mother would start questioning her instead?
Feeling deeply wronged, Feng Yunxiao roared angrily at Chen Jinfeng, “Money, money, money! All you care about is money!”
“Your daughter suffered humiliation outside, and as my mother, not only do you not comfort me, you start interrogating me the moment you walk in!”
When Chen Jinfeng heard that Feng Yunxiao had been wronged, she panicked.
Carefully avoiding the shards on the floor, she walked toward Feng Yunxiao.
“You suffered grievances? Who bullied you?”
“Tell Mother. I’ll avenge you!”
“You?” Feng Yunxiao sneered mockingly. “You can’t.”
“I can’t?”
Chen Jinfeng shot Feng Yunxiao a look.
“You think your mother managed to firmly sit in the position of Minister’s wife by being some weakling?”
Feng Yunxiao mercilessly poured cold water on her confidence.
“Mother, have you forgotten? During the incident at the restaurant last time, not only did you fail to save your daughter, you even got yourself dragged into it too.”
Chen Jinfeng’s expression stiffened, anger flaring instantly.
“And you still have the nerve to bring that up? Of all people to provoke, you just had to provoke the Regent Prince!”
“Do you know who the Regent Prince is?! If he’s even slightly displeased, your father’s official hat could fall right off his head!”
Feng Yunxiao stared at Chen Jinfeng.
“What if I told you the person who upset me today was…”
Chen Jinfeng’s heart tightened as she interrupted immediately.
“Don’t tell me it was the Regent Prince again?”
Feng Yunxiao merely looked at her silently.
Seeing this, Chen Jinfeng assumed Feng Yunxiao had admitted it.
Now she truly became anxious.
“You dead girl, honestly! Of all people to offend, you insist on offending the Regent Prince.”
“Wasn’t the restaurant incident enough of a lesson for you?”
“Those three days… the food your mother and I ate for those three days—!”
“Yunxiao, you—”
Feng Yunxiao interrupted her.
“No.”
Chen Jinfeng froze briefly.
“What do you mean, no?”
“The person who offended me was Feng Jingge, not Xiao Jinghan.”
“Oh, so it was that little slut Feng Jingge!”
Chen Jinfeng instantly calmed down.
But a moment later, realization struck her, and she shouted furiously, “What?!”
“It was that little slut Feng Jingge who bullied you?”
“How did she bully you?”
“That little slut lived worse than a dog back in the residence. Now that she’s staying in the Regent Prince’s Manor, she’s gotten arrogant by relying on his power and actually dares bully you.”
“If we don’t teach her a lesson, she’ll really start thinking she’s somebody.”
“Just wait. I’ll immediately send people to the Regent Prince’s Manor.”
“I’ll drag that little slut back here and properly discipline her!”
“I may not dare touch the Regent Prince, but I can still handle one Feng Jingge!!!”
“Just wait!”
Cursing nonstop, Chen Jinfeng lifted her skirts and stormed toward the door.
Just as she was about to open it and leave, Feng Yunxiao suddenly called out to stop her.
“Mother, Feng Jingge is almost of age for her coming-of-age ceremony, isn’t she?”
Chen Jinfeng’s hand paused on the door.
Turning around, she saw a smile curl across Feng Yunxiao’s lips.
“A girl nearing her coming-of-age ceremony who still has no marriage arrangement… if word of that spreads outside the residence, people will say you, the mistress of the household, are incompetent.”
Chen Jinfeng instantly understood what Feng Yunxiao meant.
—
At that moment, Feng Jingge and Xiao Jinghan had just stepped down from the carriage when the manor steward rushed toward them at lightning speed.
His face was full of anxiety.
“Your Highness, Miss Feng, you’ve finally returned.”
Feng Jingge frowned tightly.
“What happened?”
“Prince Yu brought a young lady to the manor.”
A young lady?
Feng Jingge and Xiao Jinghan exchanged a glance.
Both immediately thought of Xi Liyue.
Inside the main hall, Prince Yu stood with his hands clasped behind his back, pacing back and forth with his head lowered.
Xi Liyue sat upright in a chair, her beautiful eyes fixed steadily on Prince Yu.
When Feng Jingge and Xiao Jinghan entered the hall, this was the scene they saw.
Hearing footsteps, both Prince Yu and Xi Liyue turned around simultaneously.
The moment he saw Feng Jingge and Xiao Jinghan, Prince Yu rushed straight toward Feng Jingge with a miserable expression.
“Imperial Uncle, save me!”
Feng Jingge: ???
Xi Liyue rose from her chair and looked nervously at the three of them.
“Imperial Uncle, you have no idea. Your nephew nearly lost his life again last night.”
“In the middle of the night, assassins suddenly appeared. Fortunately, the guards in my manor were skilled enough to fend them off.”
“Although the assassins were repelled, five or six guards still died.”
Prince Yu looked visibly shaken.
Feng Jingge pressed her lips tightly together and glanced toward Xi Liyue before speaking coldly, “They came for her?”
Prince Yu froze briefly. He looked back at Xi Liyue, then lowered his voice and turned back toward Feng Jingge.
“Imperial Uncle, come outside with me for a moment.”
Feng Jingge glanced at Xiao Jinghan before following Prince Yu to a secluded corner outside the hall.
Prince Yu looked left and right cautiously to make sure no one was nearby.
Seeing this, Feng Jingge said coldly, “There are no outsiders here. Just say it directly.”
Only after hearing that did Prince Yu dare to speak.
“Imperial Uncle, I was afraid drawing too much attention would bring trouble, so I never told her my real identity…”
