Even though there were two ML’s children, she treated them the way you would treat your relatives’ kids—wishing them well and offering help when possible, but never over her own child. This realistic approach really stood out to me.
What I found surprising was how the story showed the lasting impact of outdated cultural norms, even years after exams were resumed. 🤯 I’ve read many novels set in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but this one is unique in how it dives deep into the effects of decades of societal expectations on women and people in general. 📚👩👧 The mention of SARS was also significant—a pivotal moment in Chinese history post-revolution, and it was rare to see it addressed in these types of novels.
I would’ve liked Su Wen to be more outgoing, fighting harder for her own chance, but I also understand why she wasn’t. You can’t become a Buddha without sacrifice, and her quiet strength is what made her so compelling. 🧘♀️✨
What I loved most was how the ML came to realize that his children were just that—his children—and that the family’s real foundation was her daughter. Over time, he shed his prejudice toward her, no longer seeing her as spoiled and childish. 🙏❤️
As for the kids, I genuinely liked all of them. I didn’t hate anyone, not even Wang. They were just living their lives, trying to find themselves, and that made them so relatable. 🌟
