Alright, let me be honest upfront—this novel wasn’t bad, but it also didn’t blow me away 🤷♀️. It’s one of those reads where I wasn’t totally hooked, but I still saw it through. Why? Because parts of it were great… but others? Not so much.
The story follows Lu Qingjia, a guy who’s already had one too many run-ins with fate (and people he really shouldn’t have messed with). To escape reality—or maybe just to survive—he ends up in this weird, freaky horror game world where ghosts are everywhere and death is kinda the default setting 💀👀.
Now, the first encounter? Chef’s kiss 👏. Imagine a ghost crawling out of a closet all slow and scary, and instead of panicking, our MC just roasts it like it’s a roast battle on stage:
“Why the fck are you so slow? With your sluggish and foolish manner you won’t even be able to eat sht while it’s hot and you still want to eat people?”
🤣 Honestly, that part had me dying (not literally, unlike most in the game).
But here’s the thing: while the humor hit, the heart of the story was kind of all over the place. I actually didn’t even like the MC that much 😅. I did love the ML though—super strong, a bit clueless, but strangely endearing. And the horror game administrators? Absolute gems. I’d read a spin-off just about them.
What really threw me, though, were the instances—basically mini world-hopping scenarios. They were cool, don’t get me wrong. But I kept asking myself:
- Are these worlds real or just simulations?
- Are they past memories, alternate timelines, or something else entirely?
- Can games really mess with people’s memories that deeply? And if they can… is their “real” world just another level?
So many questions, and the novel just kinda shrugged at them 😶🌫️. Which might’ve been okay if I hadn’t recently read 🔥 Apocalypse Star House Hoarding and 🎮 Simulated Crime: This Criminal Doesn’t Seem to Be Acting—both of which had clearer rules, stronger worldbuilding, and super-smart female leads who made sense. Maybe that’s why this one felt like it missed the mark a bit for me.
Also, Lu Qingjia was too good at everything. Like… how were other players even surviving before he showed up? Was everyone dying left and right until Mr. Genius entered the chat? It made the whole game world feel less believable.
BUT—and it’s a big but—it is still a fun ride if you’re looking for:
- Overpowered MC ✅
- Lovable, chaotic ML ✅
- Horror game vibes with a twist ✅
- A little mystery and a whole lot of world-hopping ✅
So yeah, if that’s your thing, give it a shot. Just don’t expect all your questions answered—and maybe don’t think too hard while reading 🧠❌😂.
Have you read it? Did you love it more than I did? Or do you have other horror game recs with actual rule logic? Drop them in the comments 👇 I’m always on the lookout for more chaotic novels with depth! 📚✨
