This person’s aura was strong—she was no match for him.
Whether she brought the little fatty or not, she wouldn’t be able to escape from his hands. But… Ye Shuangxue reached into her small satchel. Inside were things her master had prepared for her.
“You’re the vicious one! Your whole family is vicious! What do you even know to start accusing others like that? Do you have any manners?” Ye Shuangxue shot back.
Shangguan Ning’er stood at the entrance of the alley, watching the sharp-tongued little girl not far away. She felt the girl looked familiar, yet couldn’t recall where she had seen her before.
Seeing the girl dressed in fine clothes, Shangguan Ning’er guessed she must be the pampered daughter of some wealthy family in Sifang City—spoiled beyond control. At such a young age, she already dared to have others kill on her behalf.
“Help me!”
“Big brother, save me! Ye Shuangxue is going to kill me!” Shi Xuan lay on the ground, screaming at the top of his lungs.
Then, summoning his courage, he scrambled to his feet and ran off like a madman, crying as he fled.
“Big brother!!”
Shi Hao looked worried. He had wanted to chase after him, but seeing Ye Shuangxue facing the young person alone, he chose to stand behind her instead.
One fat, one thin.
One tall, one short.
Such a combination made Shangguan Ning’er want to laugh.
Sifang City really was an interesting place.
She slowly walked forward. Ye Shuangxue clenched her small fists nervously and slightly turned her head to Shi Hao.
“You go first. Run as fast as you can to the hotpot restaurant and call my master.”
“No way! What about you?”
“If we go, we go together!”
Shi Hao was loyal. Since Ye Shuangxue had saved him, he was willing to take a blade for her.
The two children stared seriously at the person before them, neither taking a step back.
“Ye Shuangxue?”
Shangguan Ning’er frowned slightly. Were there that many people with the surname Ye in Sifang City?
She narrowed her eyes at Ye Shuangxue, lifted her chin, and said, “Since your parents didn’t teach you properly, I’ll teach you a lesson today.”
As she spoke, she placed one hand behind her back and reached out with the other to twist Ye Shuangxue’s ear.
But Ye Shuangxue was fast.
She dodged unexpectedly, causing Shangguan Ning’er to grab nothing. Shangguan Ning’er’s brows knitted together as she nodded.
“So you’ve had some training. No wonder you’re so arrogant. If someone could raise a child like you, your parents must not be good people either.”
“Your parents are the ones who aren’t good people!” Ye Shuangxue snapped, gritting her teeth in anger.
Not caring about anything else, she grabbed something from her satchel and hurled it straight at Shangguan Ning’er’s face.
A cloud of blood-red mist burst forth.
Shangguan Ning’er reacted instantly, retreating several steps and raising her arm to cover her nose and mouth.
“Run!”
Ye Shuangxue grabbed Shi Hao and bolted.
Shi Hao glanced back at the person behind them and frowned. “What about him? Will he die?”
“Not now. But once I go back and tell my master, he definitely will!” Ye Shuangxue said coldly.
Shi Hao was so frightened he shut his mouth and simply followed her as they ran.
Some of the powder had entered Shangguan Ning’er’s nose. She frowned and waved her hand, but within moments, an unbearable itch spread across her body.
Just who was this vicious little girl?
She actually had poison on her?
Today, she had disguised herself and slipped into the city to search for the children’s whereabouts. Sifang City was vast—it would take time to find three children. Shangguan Ning’er never expected that on her very first day, she’d be tricked by a vicious little girl.
No wonder this place was called the City of Sin—there really wasn’t a single good person here.
“I… I… I can’t run anymore!”
Shi Hao was drenched in sweat, hands braced on his knees as he panted heavily. Already chubby, running like this was torture for him. His face was flushed red, his breathing ragged, his throat felt like it was on fire.
Ye Shuangxue turned back to look behind them. “She didn’t catch up.”
Just as she finished speaking, a group of guards in uniform dark-red clothing, sabers hanging at their waists, came rushing toward them.
Seeing two children by the roadside, the leader of the guards sized up Ye Shuangxue from head to toe. “Have you seen a young man? He had a blue headband and was wearing light-colored—”
Before the guard captain could finish, Ye Shuangxue immediately stepped forward eagerly, tugging at his sleeve. “I’ve seen him!”
“I’ve seen him, uncle! That person was really scary. He tried to grab us just now. Uncle, he was right over there!”
Upon hearing this, the guard captain immediately waved to his men. “Let’s go, check over there.”
Ye Shuangxue’s lips curled up in satisfaction.
Even as the guard captain walked away, he didn’t forget to turn back and remind her, “If there’s nothing else, hurry home. Recently, enemies of the Great Zhou have infiltrated the city—it’s not safe.”
“Got it, uncle! There’s another exit over there too, right there—don’t forget!”
Ye Shuangxue stretched out her little hand and pointed toward another alley.
Her attitude was exceedingly attentive.
Shi Hao stared at Ye Shuangxue in a daze. This move… was just too brilliant, wasn’t it?
“Let’s go!”
Ye Shuangxue grabbed the still-dumbfounded Shi Hao and walked forward. Only after a long moment did Shi Hao come back to his senses. “Where are we going?”
“Didn’t we agree to find Sister Ling’er and have her take us to the new academy to have a look?”
Shi Hao’s expression turned troubled.
Shi Xuan had just said earlier that his father wouldn’t let him continue studying. Even if they went to the new academy, what would it change? Shi Xuan would never allow him to live in the city and bring shame to him.
…
Meanwhile.
When Shangguan Ning’er saw that Ye Shuangxue and Shi Hao had run off, she didn’t intend to chase them. But at this moment, her whole body felt as if it were being scorched by flames—an unbearable agony.
An intense itch spread all over her body. Shangguan Ning’er kept scratching her back—she had been poisoned, and she needed the antidote immediately.
She had only taken two steps forward when a series of hurried footsteps sounded ahead.
Not good!
Shangguan Ning’er quickly scanned her surroundings. There was nowhere to hide, so she leapt up onto a rooftop and concealed herself there.
The next moment, a squad of armed guards rushed in.
“Search carefully!”
“Our informant said this is the place. If we catch this person, we’ll earn merit.”
“Over here!”
The group began rummaging through the crates, causing a chaotic commotion. Shangguan Ning’er’s face flushed an unnatural red. The itching and stabbing pain made her body involuntarily rub against the cold roof tiles.
That vicious little girl—if I catch her, I’ll make sure to teach her a harsh lesson.
I’ll make her parents kneel and beg for forgiveness.
And that informant the guards mentioned?
How did the Four Directions City guards know her location?
Shangguan Ning’er frowned, her thoughts in disarray. The first face that flashed through her mind was Shen Jie’s.
It must be him!
Aside from Shen Jie, the others had all been her subordinates for many years, loyal to the Great Zhou and to His Majesty. Shangguan Ning’er couldn’t think of anyone else who would betray her.
A dark glint appeared in her eyes, murderous intent surging from her body.
Crack! A crisp sound suddenly came from above her head.
“Who’s there?!”
Whoosh!
Whoosh!
Whoosh!
The guards instantly tensed, drawing the blades at their waists and staring vigilantly at the rooftop. The captain gestured for his men to stay put as he crouched low, gripping his sword, inching closer step by step.
After quickly assessing the situation, Shangguan Ning’er struck without warning.
The moment she moved, two guards fell to the ground, dead with their eyes still open.
“Since you’re here… don’t even think about leaving!”
