Under everyone’s astonished gazes, Ye Tian narrowed his eyes and picked up a round, emerald-green jade token.
Carved on it, in traditional characters, was the single word: “God.”
The token was smooth and cool to the touch, faintly cold in his hand. It felt familiar somehow, yet he couldn’t recall where he had seen it before. The red tassel beneath it swayed gently as Ye Shuangxue reached out to take it.
The moment Ye Tian looked at his daughter’s face, his pupils suddenly shrank.
Shennü Palace?
Fragments of the novel’s plot flooded his mind. The number one assassin organization in the martial world. Years later, Ye Shuangxue would escape from a brothel, collapse unconscious by the river, and be rescued by Shennü Palace. From then on, she would carve her way through bloodshed, becoming a killing machine.
Why would assassins from Shennü Palace appear here?
Ye Tian’s mind buzzed. Looking at his daughter, a deep unease rose in his heart.
Was the plot really impossible to change?
What was meant to happen… could it truly not be avoided?
“This looks really familiar…” Ye Shuangxue muttered, frowning slightly as she curiously took the jade token from Ye Tian’s hand.
Seeing her reaction, Ye Tian’s heart skipped a beat.
Of course it looked familiar.
In the original story, she would eventually slaughter the leader of Shennü Palace and take over as its head, dominating the world for a time. And once she gained power, the first thing she did was track down this very father of hers… and begin her ruthless revenge.
Ye Tian’s lips twitched. He turned to Sun Wuji and asked, “Where did this come from?”
“I definitely didn’t steal it. They gave it to me willingly,” Sun Wuji said, avoiding his gaze as he quickly lifted his bowl and gulped down soup.
Ye Tian: …
People just hand over tokens like this?
Was that even normal? With a token like this, its owner’s life was practically tied to it. And yet Sun Wuji lied without even thinking, treating him like a child.
Seeing Ye Tian stare at him, Sun Wuji grew uncomfortable. “Alright, alright! Two women came to the village entrance. They saw I’m a good person and gave it to me. Then they left. They probably won’t come back.”
He sounded impatient as he explained.
There was no point pressing further. Since Sun Wuji didn’t want to reveal more, Ye Tian didn’t bother exposing him either.
“Eldest, let’s see what’s in your pouch,” Ye Tian said, craning his neck with curiosity.
Ye Yunting stepped forward and generously poured everything from the pouch onto Ye Tian’s bed.
Clatter—
Gold ingots.
Gold leaves.
Yuanbao, neatly bound booklets, loose silver, and jade tokens.
“We’re rich!”
“Hahaha… This is more than I make in three months running a hot pot shop. Where did you run into this person? Tomorrow night, we’re all going,” Ye Tian laughed, staring at Sun Wuji.
Sun Wuji lifted his chin arrogantly and snorted.
How ignorant.
Looking at the pile of glittering gold on the bed, Ye Tian grinned from ear to ear and quickly gathered it up.
“Your father never takes children’s things,” he said solemnly. “I’ll keep the valuables safe for you. As for the loose silver, I’ll divide it up as pocket money.”
Pocket money?
Xiao Jiang’s eyes lit up instantly.
He pressed his lips together, staring at Ye Tian in excitement. In his entire life, he had never received pocket money before—and this was silver!
With it, he could collect herbs and sell them, earning even more money.
His small face flushed red with excitement.
Ye Yunting glanced at the loose silver, his expression indifferent.
As for Shuangxue, she showed no interest at all. To her, money was like dirt—completely meaningless. As long as she had meat to eat every day, that was enough.
“This piece is mine.”
Ye Tian picked out the largest piece of broken silver and placed it in front of himself.
Then he chose a smaller one and handed it to Ye Yunting. “This is for the eldest.”
“The second’s.”
“The third’s.”
“And the old man’s—your share too. From now on, if you want to eat anything, use the money to buy groceries. Don’t say I’m bullying you.”
Sun Wuji nodded repeatedly, quickly squeezing over with a grateful look at Ye Tian.
He had never experienced getting pocket money before—it felt quite interesting.
Sun Wuji squeezed in among the three children, his messy white hair sticking out in all directions as he squatted on the ground. The three kids gathered around Ye Tian’s bedside, while Ye Tian sat on the edge of the bed, his expression serious.
“Mine.”
“Yours.”
“Yours.”
“Yours.”
Everyone’s eyes moved rapidly, growing more and more excited as Ye Tian pointed.
When the distribution was over, Ye Tian covered the large pile of silver in front of him. Sun Wuji glanced at his own pitifully small share and frowned. “Why do you have so much?”
“So much?” Ye Tian snapped. “Weren’t you here when we divided it?”
“Fair and square—what’s the difference?”
Seeing Ye Tian staring at his portion, Sun Wuji hurriedly covered his own silver.
Xiao Jiang glanced at Sun Wuji’s share, then at his own. Good—Grandpa Sun had even less.
Father still loved him more.
Xiao Jiang chuckled foolishly, grabbing a few pieces of silver and preparing to stuff them into his clothes.
Suddenly, Ye Tian spoke, “Daughter, want to eat candied hawthorn?”
Candied hawthorn?
Ye Shuangxue’s big eyes sparkled. “Yes!”
Ye Tian cast a meaningful glance at the silver in front of her. Ye Shuangxue looked at him in confusion, then after a moment, her little brows relaxed. With a cheerful smile, she pushed all her silver toward Ye Tian.
“It’s all yours—just don’t forget one candied hawthorn a day.”
“Deal!”
Ye Tian agreed readily, even praising her. “Having a daughter is wonderful. A daughter really is her father’s little padded jacket—couldn’t be more true.”
“I must have been a man who saved the galaxy in my past life.”
Xiao Jiang and Ye Yunting exchanged a glance. Seeing how happy Ye Tian was, Ye Yunting generously pushed his silver over.
“Mine too. You’ve worked hard during this time.”
Though his voice was childish, his tone was steady and composed.
“And mine.”
Xiao Jiang handed back the silver he had just taken. “From now on, Xiao Jiang’s money will all be kept by Father. I’ll just earn it, and Father will spend it.”
“Bootlickers.”
Sun Wuji was unconvinced. Looking again at his meager silver, he realized Ye Tian had completely fooled the three kids. Suddenly finding it pointless, he tossed his silver over as well.
“You keep mine too, old man’s share.”
“If I’d known you liked this stuff, I’d have brought more back in the future,” Sun Wuji muttered under his breath.
He had originally thought that since he didn’t catch any chickens, there might at least be some pretty trinkets in that woman’s purse—something his little disciple might like. Who would’ve thought it would all end up benefiting Ye Tian instead?
…
Meanwhile—
On the snowy plains at night, even dripping water would freeze instantly.
The north wind howled, mixed with snowflakes, as a group of people trudged through the vast white expanse, stepping deep and shallow into the snow.
“Lord Shangguan…” one of them shouted at the top of his lungs, though Shangguan Ning’er could barely hear him. The roaring wind whipped her long hair across her face, the strands clinging to her cheeks, adding a touch of delicate charm to her frost-reddened nose and face.
“Lord Shangguan, we’ve already entered Great Liang territory. Should we rest for the night and make plans tomorrow?” someone suggested, looking at the pitch-black sky. The air felt heavy, without a trace of light—like a storm was about to come.
“No need,” she replied. “Change disguises and continue on.”
