“Hello, the number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later…”

Chu Jinhan paused, hung up the call, then opened WeChat and made a video call.

Still no one answered.

At this point, his expression was even darker than before.

Wei Ke didn’t dare to provoke him. As soon as he left the meeting room, he immediately ran off in another direction.

Standing in place for a long while, Chu Jinhan finally picked up his phone again and made another call.

“Keep following her and see where she goes.”

Song Yunfei had changed both her phone and phone number. After the last time her location was traced, she had developed a lingering fear and didn’t even dare to bring her old phone with her.

She glanced at the navigation—very far. Even driving nonstop would take two days and two nights.

But that was clearly impossible. By estimation, it would take about four to five days.

Since she didn’t have anything urgent, she decided to drive slowly.

Bai Yu only realized she was missing on the third day, because she hadn’t collected any red packets for three consecutive days—this didn’t match Song Yunfei’s usual behavior.

Before, every night before going to bed, she would clear all her red packets. If she forgot, she would collect them the next morning after waking up.

Bai Yu was puzzled. Could it be that she had already been “sent to work on a sewing machine”? (i.e., gotten into trouble)

That didn’t seem likely—he hadn’t heard any news at all. On the contrary, he had found out that Chu Jinhan had returned to Hai City a few days earlier.

Just as he was about to remind Song Yunfei, he found that she was completely unreachable.

In the afternoon, Bai Yu swapped shifts with someone and drove to the residential complex where Song Yunfei lived.

After knocking on the door for a long time with no response, he went to her workplace to ask, only to discover that she had already resigned about twenty days ago.

“Ah, Yang Cuihua, you actually ran away on your own.”

Although Bai Yu was smiling, his teeth were clenched in frustration. No wonder she had asked him last time how he had found her address.

Combined with the fact that she had repeatedly reminded him to prepare, it wasn’t hard to infer that this woman never intended to take him along at all.

At this moment, if Bai Yu and Chu Jinhan were placed together, their expressions would probably look very similar.

Bai Yu drove aimlessly around the road, but his mind was thinking about how to find this little scammer.

Cheating Chu Jinhan was one thing—but she even deceived him.

Suddenly, he saw someone waving at him up ahead.

Noticing the dog at her feet, Bai Yu’s eyes flickered slightly. He slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road.

Xiao Xian was bundled up tightly like a rice dumpling, wearing both a hat and a mask—hard to recognize at a glance.

After the car stopped, Xiao Xian carried her suitcase over on her own and placed it in the back of the sports car.

She then opened the rear door and put the dog inside.

Unexpectedly, as soon as the dog saw the person in the driver’s seat, it immediately bared its teeth, arched its back, growled lowly, and assumed a ready-to-attack stance.

Bai Yu said, “Hold onto it. If it suddenly rushes at me and bites, I’ll stew it into soup.”

Xiao Xian turned to glance at him, then at the snarling dog.

“You really are something— even dogs don’t like you.”

Though she said that, she still got into the car and held the dog tightly in her arms to restrain it.

Xiao Xian said, “Take me to the airport.”

Bai Yu glanced at the rearview mirror and chuckled. “Alright then—private chauffeur service. Ten yuan for a person, five million for a dog.”

Upon hearing this, Xiao Xian glared at him angrily. “Why am I only ten yuan?!”

After saying that, she realized something felt off.

Before she could fix it, Bai Yu had already continued, “Then you’re also five million. Humans and dogs are equal. Satisfied now?”

“You—!”

Bai Yu cut her off before she could continue, “Why is this dog with you?”

Xiao Xian snorted and turned her head away, ignoring his words.

Bai Yu sighed. “If you’re not going to talk, then get out of the car.”

Xiao Xian hesitated. In such cold weather, she didn’t want to call another taxi either.

“Take me to the airport, and I’ll tell you.”

Bai Yu had no choice but to start the car and drive off.

About ten minutes later, Bai Yu spoke again. “You can tell me now, right?”

Xiao Xian glanced at the time. They were almost there, so she told him.

After hearing her explanation, the corner of Bai Yu’s mouth twitched. “You believed her?”

Xiao Xian said, “Why wouldn’t I believe her? She spoke so sincerely—I think it’s true. Do you think everyone is like you, full of bad intentions?”

This time, Bai Yu was truly left both amused and exasperated by her.

After several attempts to speak but stopping himself, he finally smiled and said only two words, “Alright then.”

While driving, they suddenly saw a group of people gathered on a bridge ahead. Some were even crossing the road recklessly. Bai Yu had no choice but to slow down.

He rolled down the window, about to ask what was going on, when through a gap in the crowd he suddenly saw a little girl struggling in the water below.

He slammed on the brakes, causing Xiao Xian in the back seat to nearly hit the seat in front.

She was about to scold him, but saw that he had already opened the door and rushed out. He ran to the guardrail and looked down, his face pale beyond anything she had ever seen.

The area was in chaos—some people were making phone calls, some were exclaiming in shock, others were discussing how to rescue the child.

Xiao Xian also got out of the car and ran to Bai Yu’s side, seeing the scene below.

“Oh my god, there’s a—”

Before she could finish, Bai Yu had already taken off his coat and jumped straight down.

Xiao Xian widened her eyes. In that instant, her impression of Bai Yu changed.

But only for a few seconds.

She saw him jump into the water, swim—or rather thrash—twice toward the little girl… and then sink.

He went under even faster than the girl.

“Someone go save him!” Xiao Xian cried out in shock, looking anxiously around. But everyone else was just panicking—no one jumped in.

Gritting her teeth, she also took off her outer coat and ran toward the bridge.

Jumping from such a height wasn’t rescue—it was suicide.

“Can’t even swim and still try to act tough!” she muttered. She ran to a lower section, climbed over the guardrail, and jumped down.

A few minutes later, several other people also jumped in and together managed to pull both the little girl and Bai Yu out of the water.

Xiao Xian and Bai Yu sat on the riverbank, wrapped in coats and shivering. Wisps of steam rose faintly from their bodies.

She trembled uncontrollably, her teeth chattering as she glared fiercely at Bai Yu. “You… are you… out of your mind?”

Bai Yu simply lowered his head and said nothing, clutching his coat tightly with both hands. His expression was one of painful struggle.

Xiao Xian sensed something was wrong. He was shaking too violently, and his pale face still carried traces of panic and fear.

Water kept dripping down his chin. For a moment, Xiao Xian thought he was crying.

She recalled the gossip she had heard earlier, then looked at the disheveled man in front of her.

It seemed she understood something.

She understood why he had jumped in without hesitation, and why he had sunk so quickly.

She pulled her coat tighter around herself and moved closer to Bai Yu, blocking the biting wind blowing from the river.

Bai Yu continued to stare at the ground, his body trembling uncontrollably. Deep within his bloodshot eyes, turbulent waves surged violently.

It was the same winter… the same icy water… and the same slowly sinking… younger sister.

A long-buried wound in his heart was suddenly torn open. The memories hidden deep within surged forth like a tidal wave, engulfing him and trapping him once again in that never-ending nightmare.
