Chu Jinhan put down his phone and rubbed his brow.
In the front seat, Wei Ke caught a glimpse in the rearview mirror and continued talking to himself. “I roughly understand the situation. There are two points you need to pay attention to. First, your situation is a bit complicated. And what makes it complicated is that this matter… it’s not simple…”
“Stop acting.”
Wei Ke awkwardly put away his phone. Fortunately, Chu Jinhan didn’t continue asking, and he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
After returning to the Chu residence, Madam Chu immediately came forward, holding him and asking after him with concern.
“You child, you disappeared just two days after coming back, and you didn’t even answer your phone. I thought you had gone missing again. What have you been doing?”
Looking at his mother’s worried expression, he paused for a moment, then casually said a few words, “Taking care of something.”
Madam Chu pressed further, “What kind of thing? Enough to turn off your phone and make you completely unreachable?”
Chu Jinhan looked at Wei Ke.
Wei Ke’s expression stiffened. Feeling quite embarrassed, he stepped forward and cleared his throat.
In a low voice, he said, “Madam, it was about the shareholders’ meeting.”
Madam Chu frowned. “What’s there to be busy about? Wasn’t everything already settled?”
Wei Ke replied, “It’s just that Second Young Master was also planning to compete.”
“Even so, there’s no need for all this trouble. Was disappearing really necessary?”
Previously, they all assumed Chu Jinhan had died, which was why Chu Xiuye had been put in his place.
Chu Minggu, their father, currently held only 40% of the shares. Although he remained the largest shareholder, he did not have absolute control.
In the early stages of the company, the Chu family held 61% of the shares. However, as the company grew, the shares had been diluted over time.
Now that Chu Jinhan had returned, combined with his own 5%, the situation was essentially stabilized. There was no need to let Chu Xiuye get involved anymore.
Chu Jinhan said, “Mom, I’m a bit tired. I’ll go upstairs and rest first.”
Madam Chu still wanted to say something, but Chu Jinhan didn’t give her the chance and walked straight upstairs.
So Madam Chu turned her gaze to Wei Ke.
“Ma—Madam, I still have something to do. I’ll be leaving now…”
“Stop right there.”
Wei Ke forced a bitter expression, took two seconds to compose himself, then turned around and said solemnly, “Madam, what instructions do you have?”
Madam Chu studied him with a probing gaze. “What exactly are you two up to?”
Wei Ke hesitated. “This… can I even say it?”
Madam Chu said sternly, “What’s there that you can’t tell me?”
After a moment of thought, Wei Ke looked like he had steeled himself. In a low voice, he said, “Boss Chu might have been heartbroken and went out to clear his head for a few days.”
“Heartbroken?”
“It’s like this… Miss Shen and Second Young Master…” Wei Ke leaned closer to her ear and lowered his voice as much as possible, briefly explaining the situation between Shen Younan and Chu Xiuye.
Madam Chu’s eyes widened more and more. In the end, she looked at Wei Ke in shock. “Really? You can’t joke about something like this!”
Wei Ke nodded. “It’s absolutely true.”
Madam Chu seemed to suffer a severe shock. She clutched her chest as if she might faint at any moment.
Wei Ke hurriedly supported her. “Madam!”
Madam Chu could barely stand steady. Trembling, she pointed toward the door, her anger nearly uncontrollable. “Go—go and bring that brat back here!”
Wei Ke steadied her and responded, then turned and ran out.
Two hours later, Chu Xiuye, dressed in casual clothes, returned and saw his mother with a dark expression.
After hesitating for a moment, he still walked over. “Mom, you were looking for me?”
Madam Chu looked at him coldly. “Kneel down.”
Chu Xiuye froze. Though confused, seeing his mother’s anger, he still knelt down as instructed.
“Mom, what’s going on?” he asked.
Madam Chu let out a cold snort. “You still have the nerve to ask me what’s going on? Look at what you’ve done yourself!”
“What did I do?”
“You’re still pretending? How long were you planning to hide your matter with that Younan from us?”
Chu Xiuye’s expression changed. “You already know?”
Hearing his words, Madam Chu’s remaining hope was finally extinguished.
She closed her eyes in disappointment and leaned back on the sofa, not wanting to say another word.
Chu Jinhan was also called downstairs.
At this moment, everyone else in the living room had been dismissed. Only Madam Chu, looking heartbroken, and Chu Xiuye, kneeling on the floor with a grim expression, remained.
Chu Jinhan paused briefly before walking toward them.
“Mom, you called for me?”
Madam Chu looked at him with pity and gestured for him to sit down.
After he sat, Madam Chu said, “I already know everything. Now you two tell me—what should we do?”
Chu Jinhan glanced at his mother, then at Chu Xiuye on the ground. “About what?”
“What else could it be? Of course, your fiancée. This brat has already admitted it.”
She pointed at Chu Xiuye, her face full of disappointment.
This boy had already confessed everything earlier—he claimed he had been the one who pursued her. No, rather, he said he had forced Shen Younan.
“So that’s what it is.” Chu Jinhan didn’t show much reaction.
Madam Chu didn’t take his reaction to heart either. After all, he had been like this since childhood—even if he was sad or upset, he would never show it.
“Xiao Han, what do you think?”
“Of course I wish them well.”
Chu Xiuye looked at him. Madam Chu also looked at him. Both of them wore identical expressions of confusion.
Madam Chu reminded him, “That’s your fiancée.”
Chu Jinhan said, “You can’t force matters of the heart. Since they are mutually in love, it’s better to fulfill them.”
“Then what about you?”
“Don’t worry about me.”
Madam Chu felt another wave of heartache. This child was so sensible it made people feel sorry for him—he was willing to give up his fiancée just like that.
She then grew troubled by another issue. “The problem is, what do we do about the Shen family?”
They couldn’t let Chu Minggu know about this, or else Chu Xiuye would likely have a leg broken.
Chu Jinhan said, “Since they are mutually in love, Miss Shen will probably go back and explain things clearly. Besides, it was only a verbal engagement and never formally finalized. Switching to someone else wouldn’t be a major issue.”
That made sense. Fortunately, the engagement hadn’t been officially set. Not many people knew about it, so changing the person wouldn’t have much impact.
After pondering for a moment, Madam Chu cast a cold glance at Chu Xiuye. “Brat, tomorrow you bring Younan over. I’ll talk to her.”
Chu Xiuye became alert. “Mom, what are you going to say to her?”
Seeing how unpromising her son looked, Madam Chu grew even more frustrated. “What else? I’m going to talk about the two of you! Are you planning to keep this hidden and sneaking around forever?”
Chu Xiuye said nothing and looked somewhat unwilling.
“What’s wrong? You really want to keep it secret?”
“It’s not that, I…” He hesitated.
“Stop beating around the bush. If you have something to say, just say it!”
“Mom, let me talk to her myself.”
Madam Chu let out a laugh out of anger. “What, are you afraid I’ll say something unpleasant to her?”
“No.”
Not many people knew about this—switching people wouldn’t have much impact.
“Then you—”
Chu Xiuye interrupted her, “Mom, this matter started because of me, so I should be the one to resolve it. In any case, I’ll give you all an explanation.”
The two of them looked at each other for a moment. Madam Chu sighed and said wearily, “You really are worrying.”
