Chapter 6 Girlfriend?

The hospital’s paparazzi issue was temporarily resolved, thanks to manager Jiang Qingyan’s decisive handling.

After some negotiation, Dr. Tang issued a diagnosis stating “severe seafood allergy.”

Once the statement was released, the fan club quickly took control of the narrative.

The negative trending topic, “Top-tier celebrity Lu Er suspected of drug use”, was quickly replaced by discussions like “Brother is so dedicated” and “Feeling for Brother.”

Often, the internet’s memory is like that of a goldfish.

“Come on, pack up and get out of here.”

Jiang Qingyan, seeing the public sentiment improving, urged Lu Er to leave. “I’ve already contacted a private doctor; you can continue the IV at the villa.”

Lu Er was completely unwilling, and an absurd thought even popped into his mind: What if Song Jingmo comes back?

But facing Jiang Qingyan’s almost fiery glare, he hung his head and let Bai Zhi help him leave.

Song Jingmo had finished his dinner with Qu Weiwei and was driving home.

The night scenery outside the window rushed past, and the image of Lu Er with red-rimmed eyes appeared uncontrollably in his mind.

As he passed an intersection, Song Jingmo suddenly yanked the steering wheel and sped toward the hospital.

He didn’t even bother finding a reasonable excuse—action came before reason.

Parking the car, he quickly walked toward the hospital building.

The entrance was deserted. The paparazzi and reporters who had previously crowded the area had dispersed, leaving a bad premonition in Song Jingmo’s mind.

He walked straight to the VIP infusion room where Lu Er had been, only to find it empty.

As expected, Lu Er was already gone.

This realization froze Song Jingmo in place, and a sense of loss—one he hadn’t noticed before—swept over him.

Standing there, he felt momentarily bewildered.

“Dr. Song?”

A slightly surprised voice called out.

Song Jingmo turned to see Liu Yuan holding a stack of documents not far away.

“You’re back? Did you forget something?”

Liu Yuan was curious; she remembered that Song Jingmo wasn’t supposed to be on night duty today.

Song Jingmo quickly suppressed his emotions and regained his usual calm. He casually gave a reason: “Came back to grab some documents.”

Pausing, as if mentioning it inadvertently, he added plainly, “Got the Autograph?”

Liu Yuan was a little surprised.

Song Jingmo usually kept to himself like a reclusive sage, paying no attention to outside matters, let alone being interested in trivial things.

Why would he suddenly ask about her little hobby?

Could it be that Song Jingmo was interested in her?

The thought made Liu Yuan’s face flush red.

She shyly said, “I was so busy worrying, I forgot to get the autograph.”

Oh my god!

She’d missed such a perfect opportunity—she could really cry.

Rolling her eyes and feigning disappointment, she added, “Dr. Song, I’m heartbroken.”

Song Jingmo: “…”

“My husband was just taken away by a really pretty young lady. They’re a great match, probably been dating for a long time.”

She glanced at Song Jingmo to see his reaction.

If Song Jingmo were interested in her, calling another man her husband should make him jealous, right?

Especially since the guy was Lu Er, such a handsome man.

“Oh?”

Song Jingmo’s eyebrows moved ever so slightly, his voice still calm. “Your husband is dating someone?”

Was the doctor focusing on the wrong point?

To continue talking, Liu Yuan elaborated, “A woman’s sixth sense is never wrong.”

“That young lady’s concern practically radiated from her eyes.”

As she spoke, she mimicked the scene: “Mr. Lu seemed very dependent on her. Together, they were like a perfect couple.”

Bai Zhi thought: Ten thousand a month salary boss, I could worship him like a bodhisattva. Forget concern, I’d do kneeling service.

After all, money isn’t easy to earn these days.

Pretty, caring eyes, a perfect match, dependence…

Each of Liu Yuan’s adjectives felt like a tiny needle gently pricking Song Jingmo’s heart.

So, his hasty return—was it meant to humiliate himself?

Did he really expect Lu Er to wait for him alone, like before?

Ridiculous.

“Mm.”

Song Jingmo interrupted Liu Yuan’s excited narration, his tone indifferent. “I’m in a hurry, leaving now.”

He turned toward the doctor’s office, his tall figure radiating a cold, distant hardness.

Liu Yuan scratched her head.

She felt that Song Jingmo seemed off tonight, though she couldn’t quite pinpoint why.

Song Jingmo didn’t actually retrieve any documents. He just circled around and exited the hospital through another door.

Back in his car, he didn’t start the engine immediately. The neon lights outside blurred into a glow.

Taking out his phone, he almost self-destructively opened Lu Er’s social media.

Lu Er’s feed mostly contained studio-edited fashion shots, occasionally showing small personal joys.

His fingers stopped at a post from six winters ago:

“It’s snowing. My girlfriend isn’t here; I hope she’s not cold.”

A worried little dog emoji followed.

Girlfriend…

Was this the pretty young lady Liu Yuan mentioned, the one who picked up Lu Er from the hospital?

Lu Er worried about her freezing even in winter—it must mean he really liked her.

And he protected her well. He scrolled through all social media but couldn’t find a photo of her.

Thinking of Lu Er looking at someone else with the same gaze he once gave him, gently;

Worrying about her with that slightly spoiled, dependent tone…

A strange, bitter feeling, like fine vines, quietly wrapped around his heart.

Irritated, he turned off the screen and threw his phone onto the passenger seat.

He was truly insane.

Why sit here, self-pitying, imagining all these messy scenarios?

Back at his villa, Song Jingmo took a cold shower, trying to calm his mind with work.

He logged into the hospital system, planning to distract himself by checking resumes of medical students who had applied for internships this year.

Until his cursor hovered over one resume, and he froze.

What caught his eye wasn’t the grades, but the eyes in the photo—the expression.

That stubborn yet fragile feeling overlapped perfectly with his memories.

Song Jingmo stared at the photo for a long time, then moved the cursor and checked the box on the cold, professional resume.

At the villa on the outskirts of Beijing, Lu Er slouched on the sofa. His phone rang, and he glanced at it before picking up.

“Little uncle, emergency help!”

The voice on the other end was excited, slightly playful. “I got the internship offer from Kangren Hospital!”

Lu Er frowned. “Are you here to show off to me?”

He had just been turned away—it was like rubbing salt in the wound.

“Not at all. You’re the best and the most handsome. Can you give me a hand when I arrive, just to show some support?”
