Finally, it was the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth lunar month—the day of Kangren Hospital’s New Year gala.
By evening, the hospital auditorium was brilliantly lit and festively decorated.
The stage backdrop featured a massive red curtain with the words “Welcoming the New Spring” in artistic calligraphy. Below, the seats were filled with medical staff dressed in casual clothes of all kinds, creating a lively atmosphere.
The performances were arranged by department.
The earlier acts were all distinctive—there was the deeply moving cardiothoracic surgery skit Heartbeat, a humorous three-line comedy from the radiology department incorporating their daily work, and a grand, powerful choir performance from neurosurgery.
The scores varied, but overall, the quality was significantly higher than in previous years—the threat of budget cuts had clearly been effective.
When it was orthopedics’ turn, the host announced: “Next, please enjoy a performance by the Orthopedics Department—Unleashing Bone Power!”
The lights dimmed, and when they came back on, seven or eight people were already standing center stage.
At the very center stood Leng Keyan and Lu Er.
Leng Keyan wore a dark blue patterned suit, perfectly tailored to highlight his broad shoulders, slim waist, and long legs.
His hair had been carefully styled, revealing a smooth forehead and sharp, heroic features.
Under the stage lights, he stood tall and handsome, his gaze sharp and confident—like a young star straight out of a drama.
Lu Er, on the other hand, wore a simple black casual suit with a white T-shirt underneath.
He lacked a bit of dazzling, superstar brilliance, but carried an effortless, relaxed charm.
Still, the stage presence he had built over years of experience made him the focal point the moment he stood there.
One was striking and upright, the other refined and radiant—together, they instantly captured everyone’s attention.
Behind them stood several other well-dressed young orthopedic doctors and interns, all looking spirited and ready.
The music intro began—a catchy, upbeat pop remix.
Leng Keyan was the first to lift the microphone and start singing, his voice clear and powerful.
The lyrics had been cleverly adapted, incorporating common orthopedic conditions and treatment principles—both professional and easy to understand.
When the chorus arrived, Lu Er joined in harmony.
Then suddenly, the rhythm shifted—the drums intensified, and the lights began flashing in sync with the beat.
A rap section was cleverly inserted into the song, humorously explaining several common orthopedic facts and common misconceptions, drawing continuous laughter from the audience.
At the climax, the music abruptly transformed into a high-energy electronic dance track.
The group quickly shifted formation and launched into a synchronized, explosive street dance performance.
Their movements were sharp and precise, perfectly hitting every beat, with flawless coordination.
When Leng Keyan danced, he was completely different from his usual sunny, mischievous self—his eyes focused and powerful, every move filled with strength and control, overwhelmingly cool.
Lu Er was even more at ease—executing even the most complex moves effortlessly, radiating stage charisma.
The audience instantly erupted.
Gasps, whistles, and applause filled the hall.
The orthopedic section, in particular, was so excited that people even stood up.
Sitting in the front row among the leadership seats, Yin Siyao stared at Leng Keyan on stage without blinking.
Under the spotlight, that sweat-soaked, confident, dazzling young man felt both unfamiliar and familiar—making his heart skip several beats for no reason.
Seated in the center, Song Jingmo held up his phone the entire time, his camera locked firmly on Lu Er shining on stage.
A gentle smile lingered on his lips, his gaze focused.
Compared to the classical dance he had filmed before, this street dance was far more passionate and unrestrained—a completely different style, yet equally mesmerizing.
The five-and-a-half-minute performance ended with a stylish final pose.
Thunderous applause followed, lasting for a long time.
Several hospital leaders on the judges’ panel nodded and whispered among themselves.
The scores were quickly revealed: 98 points on average.
The highest score of the night—far ahead of the rest.
“Yeah!”
The orthopedic doctors erupted into cheers.
On stage, Leng Keyan high-fived Lu Er in celebration, then turned toward Yin Siyao’s direction and blinked exaggeratedly.
Watching his “praise me!” expression, Yin Siyao couldn’t help but smile.
Across the crowd, he gave a slight nod—and even raised a thumbs-up.
The smile on Leng Keyan’s face grew even wider.
After returning to his seat beside Song Jingmo, Lu Er still had fine beads of sweat on his forehead.
Song Jingmo took out a tissue to wipe his sweat, then opened a bottle of water.
Lu Er took it and drank a large gulp, calming his breathing.
He whispered, “I haven’t danced like this for months. Doing such a routine all of a sudden… my muscles are a bit sore.”
“You danced very well,” Song Jingmo said softly but clearly, his gaze gentle as he looked at Lu Er’s sweat-damp temples. “Better than many professionals.”
Lu Er’s ears warmed slightly. Taking advantage of the moment while drinking water, he leaned close to Song Jingmo’s ear and whispered, “Then Doctor Song… is there a reward?”
The smile in Song Jingmo’s eyes deepened. He gently held Lu Er’s hand. “Rewards… are better discussed somewhere else.”
Lu Er snorted softly. “I’m the one asking for a reward—how did it turn around…”
After slipping off the stage, Leng Keyan squeezed his way next to Yin Siyao, his eyes shining brightly. “Teacher Yin, we got first place!”
“98 points—I kept my promise.”
Looking at the flushed excitement on his face and the strands of damp hair sticking to his forehead, something soft in Yin Siyao’s heart kept expanding.
He nodded and, unusually, gave a straightforward compliment: “Mm, I saw. Yanyan is amazing—you danced very well.”
Leng Keyan’s smile instantly widened, as if an invisible tail behind him were wagging wildly.
He leaned close to Yin Siyao’s ear, his warm breath brushing against it. “Then Teacher Yin… can you make good on my reward tonight?”
Yin Siyao shot him a glance. “Shut up. If you dare say one more word, you won’t get any reward at all.”
Not wanting his “almost-in-hand duck” to fly away, Leng Keyan obediently shut his mouth and sat properly, not daring to say another word.
An hour later, the host announced the final results on stage: “The department that won first place in this New Year Gala is—Orthopedics!”
“Congratulations!”
“Director Yin, your department really turned things around this year!”
Several department heads offered their congratulations one after another. Yin Siyao smiled and looked at Leng Keyan and the rest of his team. “It’s everyone’s effort. Thank you for your hard work.”
The neurosurgery director seized the chance to recruit: “Keyan, how about coming to neurosurgery after graduation? Orthopedics is all heavy labor—it’s exhausting…”
Leng Keyan smiled sweetly. “Then I definitely have to go into orthopedics. Can’t let Teacher Yin get tired.”
The other directors: “……”
On the way home, Leng Keyan quietly held Yin Siyao’s hand.
Yin Siyao’s fingers twitched slightly—but he didn’t pull away.
Leng Keyan felt that all the late nights, rehearsals, and hard work had been worth it.
This must be what it feels like—to work hard for someone, to be seen by them, and to be acknowledged by them.
