After finishing a surgery, Song Jingmo hadn’t even taken off his scrubs when he received a call from Bai Zhi.

On the other end, Bai Zhi’s voice was choked with sobs as she incoherently explained everything.

“Dr. Song…”

Her voice trembled. “Brother Lu told me not to tell you, but I really have no choice. He’s alone in the room, and I’m worried…”

“I’ll be there right away.”

After hanging up, Song Jingmo made another call.

“Mo Mo?”

Qu Suiwan’s voice carried a smile. “Why are you calling at this hour? Miss your mom?”

“Mom,” Song Jingmo got straight to the point, “I need a lot of money.”

Qu Suiwan’s tone immediately turned serious. “What happened? Are you sick? Or…”

Song Jingmo briefly explained the situation.

“Ten billion?!”

Her voice was full of disbelief. “How can his mother be so ruthless? He’s her own son, after all.”

“Mom, I know this amount—”

“I’ll figure out the money.”

Her tone was firm and decisive. “Don’t worry about it. Go find Er’er right now. That child must be terrified.”

“Ten billion… my god, I can’t even imagine that kind of number.”

“Mom,” Song Jingmo tightened his grip on the phone, “we don’t have that kind of money at home. You and Dad are both…”

“We don’t, but your uncle does.”

Her voice calmed again. “It’s a lot, but we can find a way. If it really comes down to it, I’ll sell my old house.”

“No,” Song Jingmo immediately objected, “that’s what Grandma left you—”

“A house is just a thing. People matter more.”

Her voice softened. “Mo Mo, I know what you’re thinking. You think this is your problem and don’t want to drag the family into it, right?”

Song Jingmo said nothing.

“Silly child,” she sighed, “from the day you decided to be with Er’er, his problems became our family’s problems.”

“Besides, he ended up like this because of you. No matter what, we should help him.”

“Go to him first. I’ll handle the money. Don’t let him feel pressured—he must be having a really hard time right now.”

“Thank you, Mom.”

“What are you thanking me for?” she laughed. “Once this is over, bring him back home to visit your grandfather.”

Villa

Song Jingmo rang the doorbell. It took a long time before the door finally opened.

Lu Er was wearing a loose white sweater. His hair was messy, his face pale, with heavy dark circles under his eyes.

When he saw Song Jingmo, he froze for a moment, then his gaze shifted away.

“Why are you here?”

“I was worried about you.”

Song Jingmo walked in and casually shut the door.

Several open suitcases were scattered across the living room floor, filled with bits and pieces of clothes and daily necessities.

The coffee table was piled with documents. On the top one, the amount column was filled with a string of shocking zeros.

Noticing his gaze, Lu Er walked over awkwardly and tried to put the documents away. “I’m packing. This villa is going to be sold too…”

“Don’t sell it.”

Song Jingmo held his hand. “Don’t sell this villa. I’ll figure out the money.”

Lu Er laughed. “That’s ten billion, not one million. Even if you never eat or drink for your whole life, how much could you earn?”

“I know.”

Song Jingmo didn’t get angry. “My parents don’t have much savings—just a little over a million.”

“But my mom said she’d talk to my uncle. It’s a lot, but we can still try to find a way.”

Lu Er’s eyes instantly reddened.

“No… how can your mom give such a huge amount…”

Before he could finish, Song Jingmo pulled him into his arms.

His arms wrapped tightly around him, chin resting on top of Lu Er’s head.

“Er’er,” his voice was gentle but firm, “spending ten billion to get such a beautiful wife—my mom would think it’s a great deal.”

Lu Er froze, then burst out laughing through his tears.

“What nonsense are you saying…”

“I’m not.”

Song Jingmo gently patted his back like soothing a child. “You don’t even know how much my mom likes you.”

“She praises the skincare set you gave her to everyone. My dad doesn’t say anything on the surface, but he secretly watched every drama you acted in.”

Hearing this, Lu Er cried even harder.

Song Jingmo cupped his face and wiped away his tears with his thumb.

The gesture was light and tender.

“It’s only been one day,” he frowned slightly, “how did you become this worn out?”

Looking at the concern in his eyes, Lu Er’s nose stung again. “I have nothing left now. Endorsements, acting jobs… all gone. I’m useless.”

“You’re not.” Song Jingmo’s tone turned serious. “Er’er, I’ll work hard. Take on more surgeries, write more papers, apply for more research projects.”

“Doctors don’t earn much, but I’ll find ways to make more money. I promise your living standard won’t drop too much.”

“You can still buy what you like, eat what you like, and do what you want.”

“As for the debt, we’ll figure it out together. Ten billion is a lot, but as long as we’re together, we’ll pay it off eventually.”

“If ten years isn’t enough, then twenty. If twenty isn’t enough, then thirty. We’re still young—we have time.”

Lu Er’s tears streamed down again.

He wanted to say, How can a doctor’s salary ever repay a billion?
He wanted to say, I’m not worth this.
He wanted to say, Just leave me alone…

But looking at Song Jingmo’s determined eyes, he couldn’t say a single word.

“Alright,” Song Jingmo ruffled his hair, “don’t sell the villa. It’s your fallback—you can’t touch it.”

Even if Lu Er stayed with him, he still needed a home of his own.

Lu Er trembled in his arms as he cried.

All the fear, grievance, and helplessness he had been suppressing finally burst out.

Song Jingmo held him quietly, letting him cry.

Only after Lu Er cried himself tired and gradually quieted down did he softly ask, “Want to sleep for a bit?”

Lu Er nodded but didn’t move.

Song Jingmo simply picked him up in his arms and carried him to the bedroom.

“Sleep.”

Sitting by the bed, he held his hand. “I’m here.”

Lu Er looked at him, eyes still red.

But he didn’t cry again—just nodded firmly and closed his eyes.

Song Jingmo sat there for a long time. Only after confirming Lu Er had fallen asleep did he quietly get up and leave the bedroom.

In the living room, the scattered suitcases and documents were still there.

He organized the documents one by one into a folder, then closed the suitcases and pushed them to the wall.

Then he dialed a number.

“Sister Weiwei, are you free? I agree to what you said last time.”

Qu Weiwei’s voice was full of excitement: “That’s great! I’ll wait at the usual place—be there soon.”
