At 1:30 a.m., Song Jingmo lay in bed, tossing and turning.

His phone screen glowed in the darkness, still on his chat with Lu Er.

The last message had been sent two hours ago.

Lu Er: “My mom’s asleep. I’m fine, don’t worry. Get some rest.”

The tone was too calm—abnormally calm.

If everything were really fine, Lu Er would’ve sent a bunch of emojis or complained about how hard his mother was to deal with.

Not just a simple “I’m fine.”

He had followed up several times, but there was no reply.

Song Jingmo sat up and dialed his number.

The ringtone went on for a long time before disconnecting automatically.

The unease in his chest grew stronger. Just as he was about to call again, his phone suddenly rang.

It was the hospital.

“Director Song, sorry to disturb you so late.”

The ER doctor on duty sounded urgent. “There’s been a multi-car accident on the highway. Five critically injured patients have been brought in—three of them need orthopedic consultation.”

“All the other doctors are in surgery. Can you come over?”

Song Jingmo glanced at the time—1:47 a.m.

He closed his eyes briefly. “Alright. I’ll be there in half an hour.”

After hanging up, he sent one last message to Lu Er:

“I’ve got an emergency at the hospital. I’m heading over now. Call me when you see this—no matter how late.”

After sending it, he quickly threw on some clothes, grabbed his car keys, and rushed out.

By the time he arrived at the hospital, the ER was already in chaos.

The corridor was packed with injured patients and their families, the air thick with the smell of disinfectant and blood.

“Director Song, over here!”

Song Jingmo hurried over—but in the crowd, he spotted two familiar figures.

Yin Siyao and Leng Keyan, both still in casual clothes, clearly dragged in for overtime as well.

Yin Siyao didn’t look too good, while Leng Keyan’s eyes were red, as if he had just been crying.

“Siyao?”

Song Jingmo walked over, surprised. “You’re back in A City already? Why didn’t you stay home for the New Year?”

Yin Siyao forced a smile. “Took him home, got kicked out by my parents. Had nowhere to go, so we came back to A City to keep grinding.”

Song Jingmo glanced at Leng Keyan—no wonder his eyes were red.

“And you?” Yin Siyao shot back. “Why aren’t you glued to Lu Er? Don’t tell me you got kicked out too?”

Song Jingmo gave a bitter smile. “Looks like we’re all in the same boat.”

The three fell silent.

Yin Siyao patted his shoulder. “Let’s get to work. Two of the crash victims are young men—bad injuries.”

The three of them headed into the treatment room.

Two young men lay on adjacent beds, both wearing only their underwear, thin blankets covering them.

Yin Siyao frowned. “What’s going on here?”

A nurse lowered her voice. “Rear-end collision on the highway. Their car was hit by a truck. When the ambulance arrived… they were already like this.”

“The police said they were… doing that in the car when it happened.”

“In the car? Seriously… that wild?”

“Yeah, middle of the night, parked in the emergency lane for that. Unbelievable.”

“If their families find out, they’ll be furious. So embarrassing.”

Song Jingmo cut in, “Patient status.”

“Bed 3, Chen Yu, 27. Head trauma, scalp laceration. CT shows no intracranial bleeding. Vital signs stable.”

“Bed 4, Lin Xiaodong, 21. Open fracture of the left femur, possible hemopneumothorax. Low blood pressure, high heart rate. Preparing for surgery.”

Song Jingmo began examining them.

“Chen Yu—ulnar fracture in the left arm, multiple soft tissue contusions. No life-threatening injuries. You handle it.”

He spoke quickly. “Lin Xiaodong is more serious. A rib may have punctured internal organs. He needs surgery immediately.”

Yin Siyao nodded. “Got it.”

Just as they were about to proceed, Lin Xiaodong suddenly woke up and struggled.

“He… he raped me! I want to call the police!”

The entire emergency room fell silent.

All eyes turned to Chen Yu.

“Lin Xiaodong, what nonsense are you talking about!”

“I’m not lying!”

Lin Xiaodong roared, tears streaming down his face. “You forced me! I’m reporting you!”

Chaos erupted instantly.

He struggled so violently that the monitor began blaring alarms.

Song Jingmo made a quick decision. “Sedative. Stabilize his vitals first.”

The nurse hurried to administer it.

Within seconds, Lin Xiaodong’s movements weakened.

Yin Siyao turned to the nurse. “Call the police.”

Operating room.

“Director Song, his blood pressure is dropping.”

“Fluids. Increase the rate.”

Midway through the surgery, the head nurse quietly entered. “Director Song, the police are here. They’re asking about the situation.”

“Let Dr. Yin handle it,” Song Jingmo said without looking up. “I can’t leave.”

“He’s already gone,” she replied. “That Chen Yu admitted it.”

“Admitted what?”

“That they did have relations in the car.”

She lowered her voice further. “But he insists it was consensual. Says they’re a couple—just had a fight, and Lin Xiaodong is throwing a tantrum.”

“The police are waiting to question Lin Xiaodong.”

“Understood,” Song Jingmo said. “Focus on the surgery.”

Two hours later, the operation ended.

On the rooftop, the two stood in silence, smoking.

“How’s Lu Er?” Yin Siyao asked.

Song Jingmo exhaled a ring of smoke, his voice low. “No idea. Still hasn’t replied. Why was Keyan crying?”

“Cried the whole way back. Said he was sorry—for causing me to fall out with my family.”

“What did you say?”

“What could I say?”

Yin Siyao stubbed out his cigarette. “I told him it’s not his fault. It was my choice. If anyone should apologize, it’s me—for bringing him home without being prepared.”

Song Jingmo changed the subject. “What did the police find?”

“Chen Yu said his mother gave Lin Xiaodong money to break up. There are photos on his phone—they really are a couple.”

Song Jingmo unscrewed a bottle cap and took a sip, the cold liquid sliding down his dry throat. “Then why accuse him of rape?”

“Lin Xiaodong took the money and agreed to break up, but Chen Yu refused.”

“He signed a contract with Chen Yu’s mother—if he got back together with Chen Yu, he’d have to pay double. Sixty million isn’t a small amount.”

“He doesn’t dare break the contract. So his only option is to accuse Chen Yu of rape.”

Song Jingmo was stunned. “So love is only worth thirty million?”

Yin Siyao rolled his eyes. “Director Song, thirty million is more than most people can earn in a lifetime.”

“Shouldn’t love be priceless?”

“Hopeless romantics are born into wealthy families. Ordinary people use all their strength just to survive—who has the luxury for love?”

“You’re not ordinary?”

Yin Siyao: “…”

Song Jingmo concluded bluntly, “So it’s not about money. It’s about the person.”

Yin Siyao retorted stubbornly, “If someone offered me thirty million to break up, I’d agree. Hesitating even a second would be disrespectful to the money.”

Song Jingmo glanced at Leng Keyan, who stood by the doorway holding clothes. “You mean that?”

“Truer than gold.”

Song Jingmo turned and walked downstairs, leaving behind a cool, carefree silhouette.

Leng Keyan called out softly, aggrieved, “Dr. Yin…”

Yin Siyao: “Song Jingmo, that’s playing dirty…”
