Seeing Yin Siyao walk in, Song Jingmo quickly ended the call.

His gaze fell on several obvious dark red bloodstains on Yin Siyao’s white coat, and his brows lifted slightly.

“What happened? Went to the ER to play the hero?”

Yin Siyao looked down briefly. “Ran into a few people who got injured in a fight. I got a little scratched while breaking it up.”

Then he recounted the absurd scene in the ER—the fiasco with the “Four Dads” dispute and how Leng Keyan got accidentally hurt while trying to intervene.

Song Jingmo listened, expressionless, and commented, “That kid, Leng Keyan, is too much of a little puppy—both in words and actions.”

“Looks tall and sturdy, but isn’t dependable. Almost fell over when pushed by a few older kids, and got hurt… really…”

Yin Siyao paused while taking off his coat, his tone calm yet protective. “He’s just an intern, still inexperienced.”

“Rushing in immediately to stop it already shows responsibility. Not everyone is like you, born knowing everything, picking it up after seeing it once.”

He added after a pause, “Ordinary people need time to grow. You need to understand that too.”

Song Jingmo glanced at him, somewhat surprised, a cold curve forming at the corner of his lips. “A strict teacher produces outstanding students. Don’t spoil him.”

“Let him face the losses he should. Don’t always wipe his mess. Otherwise, his still-soft bones will never harden, and he’ll end up a pretty vase that looks good but is useless.”

“When did I ever spoil him?”

Yin Siyao was a little speechless. “But you—back when Lu Er was in medical school, didn’t you worry about every exam? Sitting in class with him, highlighting points…”

“If Lu Er hadn’t abandoned medicine for art, you probably would have checked every single case he handled. Who’s really spoiling whom?”

Song Jingmo replied, annoyed, “That’s not the same. Er’er is Er’er.”

Yin Siyao stopped arguing. “I’m off work first.”

Emergency Department

Leng Keyan took a shower to wash away fatigue and the faint scent of blood.

He changed into a bright yellow hoodie, paired with slim black jeans and white sneakers.

After fixing his hair, he looked at the face in the mirror—bruised yet smiling—and felt genuinely happy.

Though there were still bruises on his temples and around his mouth, he radiated youthful energy, like a tiny, vibrant sun.

He walked briskly to the floor where orthopedics was located. Before he reached the office door, his smile froze.

In the hallway, Yin Siyao was standing in front of Zhao Jingshu, who wore a creamy white coat, her makeup delicate, her smile gentle.

The joy drained instantly, replaced by a pang of anxiety and dread.

Why is Zhao Jingshu here?

“Siyao,” Zhao Jingshu’s voice was soft, with a hint of coquettishness, “you said on WeChat you had something to do tonight. What is it?”

“Not even time to have a meal together? I’m alone in City A and don’t know where’s good to eat…”

Yin Siyao frowned slightly, his tone polite but distant. “I do have some personal matters. Let’s reschedule the meal.”

“You promised to watch a movie with me last night, but you left halfway through dinner.”

Zhao Jingshu pressed, with just the right amount of innocent grievance.

Standing not far away, Leng Keyan felt heavy and frustrated.

He feared Yin Siyao would ditch him for Zhao Jingshu.

He wanted to rush forward, but with his bruised and battered face compared to Zhao Jingshu’s pristine makeup, he’d clearly lose.

Maybe today, it’s better to just let it go.

He was about to turn when he heard Yin Siyao’s voice clearly: “Why aren’t you coming over?”

Leng Keyan froze, forcing himself to turn back, squeezing out a slightly awkward smile. “Teacher Yin… Sister Zhao.”

Yin Siyao’s gaze lingered on the bright yellow hoodie for a moment. To Zhao Jingshu, he said: “We had planned to have dinner together, and also discuss work.”

Zhao Jingshu’s eyes flickered when she saw Leng Keyan in the bright hoodie, bruised yet still handsome.

Then she smiled. “So it’s a date with Dr. Leng.”

Turning to Yin Siyao, she played the emotional card. “Can I come too? I won’t disturb your work discussion. Besides, Uncle and Aunt told you to take care of me…”

Invoking Yin Siyao’s parents again, her tone carried dependence and moral leverage.

Yin Siyao’s brows tightened.

Faced with Zhao Jingshu’s insistence, especially her constant parent references, he was helpless and irritated.

Directly refusing would be rude, given their family ties. But agreeing…

Seeing Leng Keyan’s obviously reluctant, slightly hurt expression, Yin Siyao felt it was inappropriate.

At that moment, Leng Keyan spoke up: “Since Sister Zhao is alone and it’s inconvenient, let’s go together. More people make it livelier.”

Better to keep the “enemy” under his watch than let Yin Siyao and Zhao Jingshu have private time.

Though displeasing to see, it was preferable to being alone with racing thoughts.

Yin Siyao glanced at Leng Keyan in surprise and nodded. “Then let’s go together.”

Zhao Jingshu’s smile was composed: “Great, thank you, Dr. Leng.”

The three left the hospital and waited for a taxi by the roadside.

Soon, a taxi stopped. The driver pressed the vacant light, waiting.

Almost simultaneously, Zhao Jingshu and Leng Keyan moved.

Zhao Jingshu reached to open the door, but a bright yellow figure moved faster, opening the rear door first.

He swiftly got inside and slid toward the window seat.

Zhao Jingshu’s hand froze mid-air, her smile nearly slipping.

Seeing Leng Keyan comfortably seated, even offering an innocent smile, made her teeth itch with irritation.

She didn’t want to sit with Leng Keyan.

But she especially didn’t want him sitting with Yin Siyao.

In a flash, she made a decision: better to endure sitting with him than let them be together in front of her.

Taking a deep breath, she wore her gentle smile again, forced herself into the back seat, and took the opposite window seat, leaving the middle seat empty.

Yin Siyao stood outside, bewildered at this strange scene.

Weren’t these two supposed to dislike each other?

Why are they fighting to sit together?

“Do you… want to move to the front?”

Yin Siyao suggested, opening the passenger door. “Who wants the front seat?”

“No need, Teacher Yin. I like the back, the view’s better.”

Zhao Jingshu’s tone was soft. “Yes, Siyao, the back is fine. You sit in front; it’s more spacious.”

Rarely agreeing, the two sent Yin Siyao to the front.

Yin Siyao: “…”

Though sensing something was off, he didn’t insist and got into the front seat.

The car drove steadily through evening traffic.

The back seat, with two people, inevitably brought them close.

A tense current flowed between Leng Keyan and Zhao Jingshu.

Zhao Jingshu eyed Leng Keyan from the corner of her eye.

Seeing his fresh bruises and the overly bright hoodie, a mix of annoyance and subtle jealousy surged.

She slightly turned, brushing her hair behind her ear.

A soft laugh, just loud enough for Leng Keyan to hear, carried a subtle mocking tone: “Dr. Leng, those bruises… were they from the hospital? You should take better care of your face.”

“Someone good-looking like you relies on their face. If scarred or marred, catching someone’s attention becomes difficult.”

Leng Keyan’s scrolling finger paused.

He slowly lifted his head, looking at Zhao Jingshu.

In the dim car light, his eyes suddenly glinted coldly.

He leaned slightly closer, voice low enough for only her to hear, innocent yet curious:

“Sister Zhao, you’re so experienced… have you used your face to your advantage often?”

“Care to share how much you earn per night, given your standards and service awareness?”

Zhao Jingshu’s smile shattered instantly, pupils contracting, a surge of anger shooting to her head.

She had never been insulted like this, especially by someone she despised, a barely-grown kid.

“You—”

Fuming, she instinctively raised her hand, only for a stronger hand to grasp her wrist.

Leng Keyan’s grip was unexpectedly strong, painful enough that her struggles failed.

He leaned closer, his usual sunny smile gone, replaced with an icy warning.

Speaking slowly but clearly, with a sharpness rarely shown: “Sister Zhao, acting out would look very bad.”

“Teacher Yin likes obedient kids. I’m just trying to please him; don’t misunderstand.”

Leng Keyan’s eyes, icy as sharpened steel, sent a chill through Zhao Jingshu, freezing her movements.

Pain in her wrist, and his unmasked cold gaze, made the threat real.

At that moment, Yin Siyao noticed the backseat.

Through the rearview mirror, he saw Leng Keyan tightly holding Zhao Jingshu’s wrist, the two close, a seemingly intimate posture.

“What are you two doing?” Yin Siyao turned, brow furrowed.

Leng Keyan’s expression immediately changed.

He released her wrist, slid back to his side, and put on a wronged yet obedient expression.

Speaking before Zhao Jingshu could, his voice crisp and innocent: “Nothing, Teacher Yin.”

“Sister Zhao was just worried about the bruise on my face, leaned in, and asked if it hurt.”

He even blinked, appearing friendly with her, as if the earlier tension was an illusion.

Zhao Jingshu’s wrist still hurt. Watching Leng Keyan’s near-actor-level face-change, she trembled with anger.

A lump of resentment in her chest, yet she couldn’t act.

Forcing a laugh, stiffer than crying, she played along: “Yes… looks painful… be careful next time…”

Yin Siyao’s gaze scanned them, clearly unconvinced.

Backseat tension was palpable, but without evidence, he couldn’t press.

He warned Leng Keyan with a glance: “Sit properly, don’t move. Almost there.”

Zhao Jingshu massaged her swollen wrist, glaring at Leng Keyan, yet dared not provoke him further.

Leng Keyan leaned back, watching the city lights fly by, a fleeting cold smile appearing, unnoticed.

The seemingly obedient little puppy had shown its hidden fangs.

Half an hour later, they arrived at the mall.

The restaurant had soft lighting, gentle music, and the scent of food in the air.

The waiter led them to a four-person booth by the window.

Seats faced each other, with soft leather sofas on both sides.

Leng Keyan immediately put on a polite, slightly shy smile.

He sidestepped, gesturing sincerely to Zhao Jingshu: “Sister Zhao, ladies first. Please sit.”

The same person who grabbed the back seat earlier?

Now acting all gentlemanly?

Zhao Jingshu sneered with a fake smile: “When you grabbed the back seat, I didn’t see such manners.”

Leng Keyan blinked his clear, innocent eyes, as if not understanding.

His smile brightened: “I just didn’t want you in heels to have trouble moving inside. Might’ve been a bit rushed, don’t mind me.”

Zhao Jingshu choked on her anger, yet couldn’t lose face in front of Yin Siyao, so she glared fiercely instead.

She stepped into the booth first, on the left sofa, sitting inside to leave the outer spot for Yin Siyao.

Leng Keyan’s mind raced, planning to nudge Yin Siyao across from Zhao Jingshu, then sit beside him.

But Yin Siyao said: “You sit first, I’ll use the restroom.”

Leng Keyan: “…”

Zhao Jingshu’s lips curved in a cold, unconcealed smile: “You act well.”

“Do you think Siyao would still find you pure and cute if he knew how scheming you are privately?”

Leng Keyan tilted his head, blinking innocently: “Sister Zhao, I don’t understand all that scheming stuff.”

While a silent current flowed between the two, Yin Siyao returned from the restroom.

Zhao Jingshu’s face lit with a sweet, proper smile: “Siyao, over here, come sit.”

She waved and patted the seat beside her.

Leng Keyan’s heart jumped, glancing nervously at Yin Siyao.
