The next morning, the orthopedics ward admitted a young girl who had fractured her tibia and fibula in a car accident.

The injury wasn’t particularly severe. Dr. Liu performed a reduction and fixation and arranged for her to stay in a regular ward.

Her brother-in-law, who had brought her, looked extremely worried. Privately, he sought out Dr. Yin Siyao, who was temporarily acting as the head of orthopedics: “Doctor, please keep an extra eye on her. She’s not in a good emotional state.”

At six in the evening, after finishing the last medical record of the day, Yin Siyao glanced at his phone.

A message from Zhao Jingshu popped up: [Siyao, I’m at the hospital entrance. 😊]

Yin Siyao’s brows furrowed ever so slightly. He stood, took off his white coat, and changed into a camel-colored overcoat, ready to leave work.

As he reached the lobby door on the first floor, he almost collided with Leng Keyan, who was carrying takeout upstairs.

Next to Leng Keyan stood Zhao Jingshu, smiling charmingly.

“Siyao.”

Zhao Jingshu immediately walked up to him, her tone intimate. “You’re off work? I’ve been waiting for you for a while.”

Then she turned to Leng Keyan, smiling politely. “What a coincidence, we meet again. Siyao and I planned to have dinner and go shopping tonight, so we’ll head off first.”

Leng Keyan’s smile froze instantly, and his hands gripping the takeout tightened unconsciously.

Yin Siyao said nothing, his gaze shifting to Leng Keyan, who was stiffly standing by: “Tonight, while you’re on the night shift, pay extra attention to the patient in bed six. Her brother-in-law said she’s emotionally unstable.”

Leng Keyan nodded mechanically, his throat dry as he muttered, “Okay.”

Yin Siyao said no more. Turning to Zhao Jingshu, he said, “Let’s go,” and led the way toward the door.

Zhao Jingshu gave Leng Keyan an apologetic smile and quickly followed.

Leng Keyan stood rooted to the spot, watching their backs walk away side by side, feeling both frustrated and hurt.

He handed a box of takeout to the just-arrived Song Jingmo, then trudged back to the office, feeling dazed.

Although his stomach was very hungry, he opened the lunchbox and stared at the appetizing meal, yet had no appetite at all.

He picked at a few bites absentmindedly before irritably closing the box.

Forget it. I can’t eat.

Remembering that Yin Siyao had asked him to keep an eye on bed six, he put away the meal, picked up the ward rounds notebook, and headed straight to the ward.

Bed six: Wen Sisi.

The girl looked very young, her features delicate, but her face was pale and her eyes vacant.

She lay quietly in bed, untouched her dinner, which had long gone cold on the bedside table.

Leng Keyan checked her medication and leg fixation, then asked, “Does your leg still hurt badly?”

Wen Sisi stared blankly at the ceiling for a long while before replying, “It wasn’t broken badly… how much could it hurt?”

“Your fracture isn’t too severe. Cooperate with the treatment, and once you recover, it won’t affect your walking.”

Hearing this, Wen Sisi’s hollow eyes flickered slightly. “Really? Too bad I didn’t die from it.”

A sense of foreboding crawled up Leng Keyan’s spine.

He didn’t dare provoke her further and instead tried to comfort her, repeatedly reminding the accompanying family and nurses to keep a close watch.

At nine in the evening, Leng Keyan was the first to reach the ward where bed six was located.

The bed was empty.

His heart skipped a beat. He immediately turned to the nurse station: “Sister Liu, where’s Wen Sisi from bed six? Did you see where she went?”

The on-duty nurse paused. “I didn’t notice… I think I saw her heading toward the restroom a moment ago?”

Leng Keyan dashed to the women’s restroom, calling her name at the door.

He even asked a female orderly to search inside, but there was no trace of Wen Sisi.

The ominous feeling grew stronger.

Suddenly, from downstairs, faint shouts of alarm drifted up.

“Rooftop! Someone’s on the rooftop!”

“It’s a girl! She’s going to jump!”

Without hesitation, Leng Keyan turned and sprinted up the stairs as fast as he could.

The night wind blew through the open safety windows, icy and biting.

When Leng Keyan, panting, reached the top floor and pushed open the heavy iron door, the cold wind hit him full force.

At the edge of the rooftop, a frail figure in a thin hospital gown sat with her back to him, hair blown wildly by the wind, unmoving.

Her legs dangled over the edge, and below her, the crowd growing louder with flashing police lights.

Leng Keyan’s heart nearly stopped.

Forcing himself to calm down, he cautiously approached the desperate figure, step by step.

“Wen Sisi.”

His voice trembled slightly in the wind.

The girl’s body seemed to stiffen, but she didn’t turn around.

Leng Keyan didn’t dare get closer recklessly, stopping about five meters away.

“Wen Sisi, it’s windy up here and very cold. Can you come down first? Whatever’s going on, we can talk slowly.”
