As soon as Zhu Jie stepped into the room, she saw someone emerge from the shadows.

“Can’t you just not go back?” Ji Yi walked over, looking somewhat dejected, reaching out as if to pull her into his arms. “If you go back, it won’t be so easy for us to meet again.”

But just as his hand touched her waist, Zhu Jie dodged away. She angrily brushed his hand aside and said coldly, “If I go back, won’t it be perfect for you to go off and live happily ever after with my fourth sister? What’s there to feel sad about? You’re probably overjoyed!”

Hearing the jealousy in her words, Ji Yi was stunned. “What are you talking about? How could I possibly run off with your fourth sister? I treat her like my elder sister-in-law. Getting involved with her would be against all moral principles!”

Seeing the genuine shock in his eyes, Zhu Jie sneered. “Oh? So getting involved with the younger sister-in-law is perfectly reasonable then?”

“When have I ever?!” Ji Yi panicked. “Even a rabbit doesn’t eat grass near its own burrow! Besides, I’ve already made up my mind—this life, I’m set on you alone. Everyone else is just passing clouds!”

“Hmph, that sounds nicer than a song. Then what were you doing dragging my fourth sister to the garden today? And even encouraging her to run away—don’t think I didn’t hear it!” Zhu Jie said through gritted teeth.

“Injustice! I was just angered by that lunatic husband of your sister!” Ji Yi immediately put on a pitiful face, pouting as if he might cry at any moment. “You have no idea—your brother-in-law almost had me killed! If it weren’t for my martial skills, the grass on our graves would already be growing by now!”

“Stop talking nonsense. If you hadn’t provoked him, would he harm you? You must have done something wrong first!” Though Zhu Jie felt a surge of affection at his ridiculous expression, she still grabbed his cheeks and kneaded them roughly.

“Yes, yes, I shouldn’t have provoked him. I shouldn’t have secretly met my own wife under his roof. I shouldn’t have borrowed his bird’s nest to build my own love nest!” Ji Yi said shamelessly. “And most of all, I shouldn’t have fallen for his most beautiful and most intelligent younger sister!”

“Smooth talker!” Zhu Jie scolded lightly, though she couldn’t help but smile.

“I’m telling the truth!” Ji Yi swore. “I just felt sorry for your sister. After all, she’s my sister-in-law. We’re family—how could I just watch them torment each other while I sneak around enjoying myself? I couldn’t bear it! And if they keep going like this, something’s bound to happen. If they don’t perish in silence, they’ll explode in silence!”

“You sure have a way with words!” Zhu Jie pushed his now thoroughly kneaded face away and put her hands on her hips. “So what, you’re planning to light the fuse on a powder keg?”

“Wrong—mediation! I’m just trying to mediate!” Ji Yi said seriously.

Zhu Jie burst out laughing. “Is that what you call mediation? Keep it up and you might just have a brick fall on your head one day and kill you before you even know what happened!”

“What’s there to be afraid of? I’ve trained in Iron Body techniques—my head isn’t a weak point!” Ji Yi boasted smugly.

“Oh? Then what is your weak point? Tell me—I might play around with it someday!” Zhu Jie said with a mischievous grin.

Ji Yi suddenly looked at her intently, the playful smile on his face softening into something gentle. “You,” he said softly. “You are my weak point.”

Even though she knew it was just another one of his sweet lines, the intensity in his eyes still made Zhu Jie’s heart skip a beat. Then he spoke again, gently, almost pleading, “Don’t go back to the palace, alright?”

“No.” Zhu Jie couldn’t agree. Her heart trembled as he pulled her tightly into his arms—who knew when she would feel his embrace again?

“Then take me with you!” Ji Yi said, feigning dominance.

“Oh really? There are no men in the palace except the Emperor. If you’re willing to become a eunuch, I could bring you in,” Zhu Jie teased.

Ji Yi immediately covered himself protectively and let out a dramatic shriek, “That’s your lifeline too—how could you bear to part with it?!”

At his words, Zhu Jie’s face flushed red, yet she still stubbornly replied, “Why wouldn’t I? Of course I could!”
