“Who cares! Once we kill him, all our future troubles will be gone!” one of them said viciously.
Ji Yi quietly counted the voices—three, four… no, at least five people! He forced himself to calm down, carefully sensing their presence. Each one of them was clearly trained.
He wasn’t so sure anymore—could he really handle that many opponents?
“I’ll go down and save him. You cover me later!” On the rooftop, someone was already getting impatient. Uncle Ge lowered his voice as he spoke.
“Wait and see,” Shopkeeper Liao whispered to stop him.
“Wait for what?” Uncle Ge immediately protested.
Liao shot him a glare. “Keep your voice down! Want to get noticed?”
Uncle Ge lowered his voice to a near whisper. “Then what are we waiting for? For them to kill our master?”
“You fool! With you around, do you really think those few shrimps can kill him?” Liao rolled his eyes. “Of course we’ll save him—but we have to pick the right moment!”
“With just them? I don’t need timing. I can handle them in a few moves!” Uncle Ge said proudly.
Liao let out a cold laugh. “You’re the fool! What’s the point of rescuing him now?”
That question actually stunned Uncle Ge. “If not now, then when?”
“You really want him to take the exam? Aren’t you afraid he’ll get skinned alive?” Liao sighed faintly. “Perfect—these guys are helping us. Let’s just stall things. As long as they don’t kill him, it’s fine! Once the exam time passes… hmph, then he won’t be able to blame us.”
“Hey, you sly fox! No wonder the master lets you handle all the business while I’m stuck driving a broken carriage. So you’ve got all these tricks up your sleeve!” Uncle Ge chuckled and settled down to watch.
Hearing that, Liao frowned. Was that praise or an insult?
At that moment, a burst of white light flashed. Uncle Ge’s eyes widened again—these people were really going for the kill!
Ji Yi felt a chilling force rushing straight toward his face. He secretly gathered his energy, flicking his fingers—
Clang! A crisp sound rang out, and the killing intent instantly weakened.
But in the next moment—
“Ahhh! My head! Who did that?!”
Ji Yi was momentarily stunned. A double hit? Had his skills improved that much? Squinting, he peeked over—sure enough, a huge red lump had already swollen on the man’s forehead. That was quite a hit!
Meanwhile, on the rooftop, Shopkeeper Liao was already scolding Uncle Ge, “Be careful! Don’t let the master notice!”
“Just keep playing your sneaky games! So many pointless worries!” Uncle Ge rolled his eyes in annoyance. Indeed, he and Ji Yi had struck almost simultaneously just now—that’s why it felt like a double hit.
At that moment, another man raised his blade even more viciously and spat, “I think this brat is just pretending! Let’s see how I chop him down!”
With a whoosh, the blade came down again, flashing coldly as it slashed straight toward Ji Yi. Ji Yi gathered energy in his hand once more, but didn’t release it. He seemed to be quietly waiting for something.
On the rooftop, the eagerly waiting Uncle Ge crouched halfway down, gripping a roof tile in one hand and gathering strength in the other—but he didn’t act immediately either, calmly waiting.
Wait… what?!
In the next instant, Ji Yi felt the blade’s edge pierce toward him, aimed straight at his handsome face. It was no longer just killing intent—he could clearly feel the wind of the blade itself.
Even Shopkeeper Liao watching from above was alarmed. The gleaming blade was almost pressed against Ji Yi’s face—one slash, and half his head would be gone!
“What are you waiting for?! Now!” he shouted hoarsely, nearly shoving Uncle Ge off the roof.
“Ah—!” “Oh—!” Two cries rang out almost at the same time.
The blade suddenly veered off, grazing past Ji Yi’s forehead with a slice, cutting off two locks of black hair—but thankfully, only the hair was lost.
