“Magistrate, please listen to me!” Seeing Magistrate Xu and the others stride off without giving her a single chance to explain, Zhu Jie felt as if they thought she was a fraud.
She silently seethed. Clearly it was Old Madam Ji and Ji Mei who were lying—she was the one the Imperial Consort wanted! So why did no one believe her?
At that moment, Manager Liao stepped closer and quietly asked, “Then who exactly is your father?”
“The Jade Emperor!” Zhu Jie huffed angrily.
Well, that wasn’t the right time to ask! Manager Liao looked exasperated. These scoundrels couldn’t even wait for her to finish speaking? Even if they didn’t believe her, at least they could have listened!
It seemed he did care about this point. Did he… have some idea in mind?
Zhu Jie let out a faint sigh. “Sorry, I was in a bad mood just now.”
Then she softened her voice and continued, “I don’t know where my hairpin is now… Could you have her take it to those Imperial Guards and have them come back quickly?”
“Take it to the Imperial Guards?” Manager Liao’s eyes widened. Could the guards really verify her identity?
Manager Liao quickly said, “Alright! They might even return by tomorrow!”
Hearing this, Zhu Jie sighed. “I just hope he can wait until then.”
“He will wait. He absolutely will!” Manager Liao whispered in agreement.
But Zhu Jie didn’t look any more relaxed. Her face was clouded with worry, full of melancholy and heavy thoughts. She stood alone outside the yamen, silently staring in.

“It’s already dark… isn’t she planning to leave?” Uncle Ge muttered softly.
“Didn’t expect it… she actually developed real feelings,” Doctor Sun said quietly. “Ah, now I regret it. Do you think the way we treated them was appropriate?”
“Why wouldn’t it be? Didn’t you hear her? The Imperial Consort wants her—that’s quite a person! She’s involved with someone in the palace. If the master finds out, would he agree?” Manager Liao’s face darkened immediately.
“But if the lord finds out, won’t he be furious? He really likes her, doesn’t he?” Uncle Ge whispered.
“Ha! You with your mouse-like courage… if you’re scared of the lord, do you think I’m not scared of the master? If this girl were just an ordinary maiden, it wouldn’t matter, but now she’s tied up with the palace. We must find out who she really is. Otherwise, if this blows up later, our lives might not even be safe!” Manager Liao lectured in a cautionary tone.
He even whispered a small threat, “Aren’t you afraid of dying? Isn’t your family afraid too?”
Doctor Sun sighed faintly. “It’s hard to raise a grown child…”
“Child? That’s your lord! Your future master!” Manager Liao shot him a sharp glare.
“Ah, it’s raining!” Uncle Ge suddenly shouted. “Quick, let’s go back!”
At that moment, a torrential downpour suddenly began. Uncle Ge dashed into the rain and shouted to Zhu Jie, “Hurry! It’s raining, let’s go back and wait!”
Within moments, Zhu Jie was drenched, yet she still kept her head bowed, silently standing in the rain. Her voice choked as she murmured, “I want to stay with him a little longer… after this, I might never have the chance again.”
In a daze, a single crystalline tear fell, mingling with the rain, just slightly larger than the raindrops. Uncle Ge froze for a moment—she was crying?
Zhu Jie still stood with her head down in the rain, letting the droplets beat down on her. She had no umbrella; all she could hear was the wind and the pounding rain.
“Look at what you’ve done—you’ve made the girl cry!” Doctor Sun muttered to Manager Liao.
But Manager Liao’s face remained stern. “You mean well, but leave this villain to me. I can’t stand by if there’s even the slightest danger to the lord.”
“Actually, this girl may be mischievous, but sometimes she’s quite good-hearted. Why can’t you just let her be?” Even Uncle Ge couldn’t help but complain.
“It’s not me! It’s Old Liao. If there’s a problem, go to him!” Doctor Sun hurriedly distanced himself.
“Then if you hadn’t made it sound so scary, would the girl have believed it?” Uncle Ge immediately called him out.
Doctor Sun jumped up excitedly. “Hey, you’re encouraging me now?”
Wait a minute… what’s going on? What are these few of them conspiring about?
