“It’s bad! Master has been injured inside!” At that moment, a young servant rushed into the room, calling out to Steward Liao and Uncle Ge.
Indeed, both Steward Liao and Uncle Ge cared deeply about Ji Yi. As soon as they heard this, they immediately stood up. “What happened?” But even more anxious than them was Zhu Jie, who pressed, “What happened inside?”
The servant glanced at her, then stammered out, “Someone inside reported just now… that Constable Hao suddenly rushed into the cell with others. They tied Master to the torture instruments and severely beat him!”
“How could this happen? Didn’t anyone stop them?” Steward Liao frowned immediately.
“They tried, but Constable Hao seemed extremely angry. He wouldn’t listen to anyone. If they hadn’t kept trying to talk some sense into him, Master might have been beaten to death!” the servant continued. “Not only that, I heard Constable Hao refused to let Master see a doctor and even threatened that he’d come back tomorrow to continue punishing him!”
“Where’s Old Sun? Did you notify him? Tell him to hurry and check on Master!” Uncle Ge urged anxiously.
“Doctor Sun has already gone!” the young servant replied, still worried. “But I don’t know what the situation is…”
The next second, Zhu Jie dashed out like the wind, leapt onto a horse, and headed straight for the government office!
Uncle Ge and Steward Liao saw this and realized—well, she can ride a horse after all! They quickly followed, but Zhu Jie rode so fast that in no time she vanished from sight.
“Will she be okay?” Uncle Ge asked anxiously.
“She’ll be fine. Going like that, no one would even let her in anyway,” Steward Liao replied.
“Let me in! Let me in!” At this moment, Zhu Jie could only plead desperately; her heart was in turmoil.
Ji Yi had been beaten—how badly, she didn’t know. But no matter how anxious she was, the guards refused to let her enter.
“Please, let me see him!” Zhu Jie even took out all the money she had on her—over two hundred taels—but the men didn’t even bother to glance at her.
One of them sneered coldly, “Aren’t you so powerful? Why beg us? Go in yourself!”
Go in myself? Zhu Jie’s eyes practically blazed. Was this a prison break? Honestly… if pushed to the limit, she might actually be able to do it!
Just then, Doctor Sun appeared from inside, his face dark as iron. Zhu Jie immediately rushed over. “Doctor Sun, how is Yi?”
Doctor Sun only glanced at her faintly and said nothing. He let out a long sigh, his face full of helplessness and concern, which made Zhu Jie even more frantic.
“Tell me straight! Is it good or bad?!” she demanded, clutching Doctor Sun’s clothes, almost lifting him off the ground.
Finally, Doctor Sun sighed and said, “It’s bad.”
Those three words hit Zhu Jie like a thunderbolt to her chest. She stammered, “Bad… how bad?”
“This isn’t human behavior!” Doctor Sun sighed heavily. “The whole body is almost unrecognizable. The blood, the skin… it’s all torn open. The inner thighs… yes, there, you can see the bones directly!” He gestured, showing a slanted wound about an inch long.
Seeing bones exposed? Zhu Jie was stunned into silence. Doctor Sun continued, “He’s not even a hardened criminal, yet they even used a branding iron. His chest… ah… the scars will probably never fade!”
Hearing this, Zhu Jie could only imagine a heroic yet pitiful figure, as if witnessing the cruelty of invaders—more ruthless than even Japanese soldiers!
Her vision went black, nearly causing her to faint. Doctor Sun said, “And they still won’t treat him! Even without further torture, just bleeding like this, he won’t last two days!”
“Why won’t they treat him? What about you? Would it help if you went in?” Zhu Jie’s anxiety surged. Thinking that Ji Yi might be lying there, battered and weak, made her head spin with dizziness.
