Watching Zhu Jie leave with a thoughtful expression, a figure emerged from the shadows of the trees. It was none other than the mad nun, Kongjing.

“Master!” Kongjing said, looking puzzled. “Why is it that when we say almost the same things, she treats you with such respect, yet regards me as a lunatic? Master, where exactly did I go wrong?”

Only then did the old nun lower her head and look at her, gently shaking it. “Both you and Kongling possess spiritual insight and can glimpse fate and the future. But your comprehension is not as deep as hers. You are too impatient.”

Too impatient?

Kongjing froze. Over the past few days, observing her master’s behavior, she had thought it was nothing more than putting on an air of mystery—basically just pretending.

Yet unexpectedly, Zhu Jie and the others truly fell for it. Like today—her attitude toward her master and toward Kongjing was completely different.

“Master, I don’t think I’m impatient. Such a good opportunity is right in front of us—whether we can turn things around depends on this moment! Those Daoists have flourished for over a hundred years. Now that the winds are changing, this is the perfect chance to restore the glory of Buddhism. If you keep acting all mysterious, I’m afraid we’ll miss it!” Kongjing said anxiously.

“And what if we do?” the old nun replied indifferently. “Buddhism has always emphasized fate and timing. When the moment arrives, its revival will come naturally.”

“But Buddha has already sent them to us—that is the opportunity!” Kongjing insisted stubbornly.

The old nun only shook her head and murmured faintly, “When one acts with intent, it becomes unintentional; when unintentional, it becomes purposeful; what is often used becomes unused, and what is unused finds its use.”

After speaking, she let out a meaningful sigh and quietly walked away into the moonlight.

Watching her calm, unhurried figure, Kongjing felt a surge of resentment. She, too, had been extremely dedicated—always calculating things ahead of others—yet still had to put on a façade of following fate and acting mysteriously. Meanwhile, she herself had only spoken the truth plainly. Did that really mean she lacked understanding?

“Benefactor!”

The room was dark as the young nun Kongling walked straight in, calling softly.

Zhu Jie raised her head. The moonlight shone behind Kongling, while she herself remained hidden in shadow. Logically, Kongling shouldn’t have been able to see her.

Zhu Jie deliberately stayed silent, even holding her breath to conceal herself further in the darkness.

Yet Kongling seemed able to see her clearly. She walked straight toward Zhu Jie and handed her something. “Benefactor, my master asked me to give this to you.”

Looking down, Zhu Jie saw it was a set of rain gear. She raised her head in surprise and looked at the sky—the moon hung high, clear and bright, with not the slightest sign of rain.

“You can see me?” Zhu Jie asked in astonishment. “There isn’t even a lamp in the room.”

Kongling smiled. “The room is very bright. A red glow surrounds you, illuminating everything like daylight. Why would I need a lamp?”

Her tone was mysterious, but Zhu Jie couldn’t help sneering inwardly. Great, so I come with built-in lighting now.

Still, Kongling also claimed to see a red glow around her. Could it be they really saw something different? Zhu Jie grew curious.

At that moment, a voice called softly from outside, “Ready to set off?”

Seeing Ji Yi had arrived, Zhu Jie immediately became interested. She pointed at him and asked curiously, “Then take a look at him—does he come with his own lighting system too?”

“Lighting system?” Kongling looked confused but answered earnestly, “He is surrounded by a beautiful purple glow—the most beautiful color I’ve ever seen.”

“Really? You’ve seen many colors? Does everyone have a color around them?” Zhu Jie asked excitedly.

Kongling nodded innocently. “It’s true. Everyone has a color around them. Most people are gray and dim, and some are even shrouded in black smoke. But I would never lie!”

“Seriously?” Zhu Jie had almost believed her, but the more Kongling spoke, the more unbelievable it sounded, making her hesitate again. “But why did your master only give me rain gear? Is it going to rain only on me? Like some localized rainfall where everyone else stays dry but I get soaked?”

“My master’s actions always carry deeper meaning. Please don’t overthink it—just take it. It will surely prove useful,” Kongling replied mysteriously, avoiding the question.
