The crowd finally dispersed. Zhu Jie and Ji Yi both jumped down from the tree. Yes, they had been crouching there timidly the whole time—but it allowed them to hear everything clearly.
“Don’t go. I’ll handle this myself!” Ji Yi said, his face dark.
“You? Handle it? Who exactly are you going to find?” Zhu Jie said, not believing him at all. “You’re not going to go to the county magistrate, are you?” Her words carried a sharp edge of mockery—she clearly didn’t think Ji Yi could find anyone capable of controlling those two petty constables.
“Forget it. Just a few low-level lackeys. I’ll handle them myself!” Zhu Jie said with a wicked smile, her voice filled with hate. “Want to arrest someone? Let’s see how I crush you!”
“I won’t let you risk yourself again!” Ji Yi insisted firmly.
But to his surprise, Zhu Jie completely ignored him, as if his words hadn’t even reached her ears. She asked casually, “So… how should I make them pay?”
Before Ji Yi could answer, Zhu Jie had already started walking toward the town. Clearly, she was going back there herself!
“Hey! I said you’re not allowed to go!” Ji Yi called anxiously. “Can’t you wait a bit and let me handle this?”
“Didn’t you hear? They’re coming tomorrow to arrest your whole family. Wait? For what? To feed you sweet potatoes in jail?” Zhu Jie said, patting Ji Yi on the shoulder as she spoke. “Don’t worry. Leave it all to me—no problem!”
Her words carried the aura of a big sister taking charge. Ji Yi could only facepalm inwardly. “Could you just—once—rely on me, let this man handle it?”
Zhu Jie listened, then sized him up seriously from head to toe, and laughed dismissively: “A man you can rely on? Even a sow can climb a tree. Forget it—better to rely on yourself. If you go, I’d have to come up with a way to save you again. Too troublesome!”
Ji Yi was speechless. Was his pride hurt? Was he really that incompetent in her eyes? Had he hidden his skills too well—maybe even overdone it?
He hesitated, opening his mouth. “Well… actually, I—”
But just as he was about to say something, Uncle Ge suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He greeted Zhu Jie warmly: “Hey, silly daughter-in-law, are you going to town?”
Zhu Jie froze for a moment. Looking at his calm expression, she thought, Huh? He doesn’t seem to react… does he not know what’s happened these past few days?
Well, Uncle Ge traveled back and forth between town and the village all the time. Maybe he just wasn’t around when the trouble happened. Zhu Jie mentally explained this to herself.
“Yes. Are you going too, Uncle?” she asked with a smile.
“Yes, leaving right away!” Uncle Ge eagerly helped Zhu Jie into the carriage. But what Zhu Jie didn’t see was that, as soon as she got in, Uncle Ge suddenly knelt down before Ji Yi!
“My lord’s status is highly esteemed and cannot be revealed lightly. This young lady’s background is unknown. If anyone finds out, it could bring trouble to my lord. At that time, we would truly have to present our heads to the master!” Uncle Ge pleaded earnestly.
“If my lord worries about the young lady’s safety, we will immediately dispatch people to protect her in secret. I guarantee not a single hair on her head will be harmed. You can rest assured!” He continued, making a solemn promise. “No, I will personally protect the young lady. Can my lord trust me?”
Hearing this, Ji Yi hesitated again.
At that moment, Zhu Jie leaned out and called anxiously: “What are you dawdling for out there?”
The instant she pulled aside the curtain, Uncle Ge suddenly seemed taller, moving so quickly that no one could see it—as if teleporting. He had shifted to the other side of the carriage in an instant. When Zhu Jie peeked out, she didn’t see him at all—nor did she see him kneeling.
Ji Yi let out a long sigh, silently nodded, and then got into the carriage. Was this his way of agreeing?
The carriage moved on. Zhu Jie was completely in the dark, still scheming inside her head about how to deal with that shameless couple.
She didn’t even realize that there were only two people in the carriage—Ji Yi and herself. Uncle Ge was driving the carriage solely for their benefit, most likely serving Ji Yi alone all along.
