“Why wouldn’t we be your parents? You can’t say something so heartless!” Old Madam Zhu immediately started wailing, “I carried you for ten months and gave birth to you! You mustn’t forget me—no matter what, you can’t forget me!”
And truly, her cries sounded heartfelt, as if it were all real. She was clearly a skilled actress.
Sure enough, the villagers watching began to murmur among themselves, some already convinced that this poor old couple was genuine.
“Look at her, crying so pitifully. If my son didn’t recognize me, I’d be heartbroken too!”
“Who is this new bride of the Ji family? Does anyone know her background?”
“No one knows! She just appeared out of nowhere. Turns out she was lost?”
“She wasn’t bought by the Ji family from some trafficker, right?”
“Has she lost her memory? Did the Ji family give her some kind of medicine?”
Now everyone started to suspect the Ji family instead. A bride appearing out of the blue naturally raised eyebrows.
Old Mr. Ji felt anxious. He didn’t even know what to do and hesitated as he asked, “Second son’s girl, think carefully. Do you really not remember your parents?”
“I remember!” Zhu Jie said firmly, “But it’s not them!”
“If it’s not us, then who else? Don’t worry, just tell us, tell us and we’ll leave immediately!” Old Mr. Zhu said forcefully, clearly convinced of Zhu Jie’s words.
“…“ Zhu Jie was momentarily at a loss for words.
Huh? Was the question really that hard to answer? Watching her, it seemed like everyone was putting her on the spot.
And they were—she truly couldn’t answer. If she did, the matter here might be settled, but she’d immediately be sent back. All that long journey, all the suffering, would have been for nothing. She didn’t want her efforts wasted.
Even if she spoke, things might still not resolve—people might not believe her. Someone might even think she was crazy!
“You can’t answer, right?” Old Madam Zhu hugged her and wailed again, “My poor child!”
Zhu Jie was completely exasperated. One person played the red-faced parent, the other the pale-faced—was this going to end?
“Sister! Why won’t you recognize us? Haven’t you cleared up your misunderstanding about your parents?” classmate Zhu Shishi added, fanning the flames, “Yes, your parents did break up your relationship with the scholar next door, but he really isn’t a good man! Can’t you see that? He wouldn’t even elope with you, which proves he never loved you!”
Wait—now there was a scholar involved? The villagers’ eyes widened. Oh, there was juicy gossip to hear! Their interest spiked immediately.
Zhu Jie frowned. This rumor was getting out of hand. If it continued, her child would practically be involved!
And indeed, there was a twist. Old Madam Zhu sobbed, “Yes, I was wrong! I caused the loss of your child. If you’re still angry at me, I’ll pay with my life! One life for one life—would you only come home if I died?”
She even looked around, measuring against the wall—as if she truly intended to bash her head against it!
The villagers gasped. So the Ji family had brought back a troublesome bride! And she was so unfilial, refusing to return home over something so trivial!
All eyes turned expectantly to Zhu Jie, as if waiting for her to admit her fault. But Zhu Jie merely snorted, said nothing, and crossed her arms over her chest, sitting back to watch the spectacle unfold.
The villagers were frustrated. They urged, “This new bride, your own mother is begging you—how can you still be stubborn? Apologize to her already!”
“Yes, do you really want to watch your mother bash her head against the wall? She’s your mother!”
