“Erhan, this is bad! Father is dying!”
With a loud bang, the courtyard gate was shoved open. Ji Laoda practically stumbled and crawled his way inside. When Zhu Jie opened the door, she saw him clutching Ji Yi’s hand, wailing as if the sky had fallen.
“Erhan! You must come back and take a look! Father is almost gone! Mother doesn’t want to live anymore either!”
Old Master Ji is dying?
The moment he said that, even Zhu Jie felt her head buzz. At noon he had still been perfectly fine—how could he suddenly be dying just as night had fallen?
Zhu Jie hurried out as well. Ji Yi stood there as if he had been scared senseless, frozen in place for a long moment without even taking a breath.
“What happened to Father? What’s going on? Speak properly!” Zhu Jie immediately snapped at Ji Laoda. “You can scare people to death talking like that!”
Speak properly? Wasn’t that asking too much of Ji Laoda? At that moment he really didn’t know how to explain it. He stammered in a flustered, chaotic way: “It’s all because of that ginseng! That thing was just some radish root! Mother got cheated!”
“Mother got cheated, so why is Father dying?” Zhu Jie was almost furious with him. “Your logic is terrible! You start talking about Father and then jump to Mother. We already know Old Madam Ji got cheated—you don’t need to repeat it!”
Ji Laoda even became unhappy. “Can’t you let me finish first?” he said, shooting Zhu Jie an annoyed glare.
Fine. Now he had a temper.
Zhu Jie stopped talking. Right now she only cared about Old Master Ji, so she let him continue.
Ji Laoda went on, “When Father heard that Mother had been cheated, he almost fainted on the spot!”
“Almost? That means he didn’t faint! Then why are you yelling that Father’s dying? Do you know how frightening that sounds?” Zhu Jie complained.
Ji Laoda sighed repeatedly.
“It would’ve been better if he had fainted! We only heard Father mutter something like ‘I’m sorry to Yi.’ At the time none of us thought much of it. But the moment we turned our heads—wah! You wouldn’t believe it—Father suddenly vomited blood! We were all terrified! With a bang he fell straight backward!”
“What happened to Father?” Zhu Jie’s eyes widened. Ji Laoda really had a habit of dragging things out.
Ji Laoda continued rambling in confusion.
“No matter how much we pinched his philtrum to wake him, Father just wouldn’t come to. His whole body kept twitching!”
When Zhu Jie heard that, she was alarmed.
Could it be that Old Master Ji couldn’t withstand the shock and had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage? Or a stroke?
At his age, in modern times he would only be considered middle-aged. But in ancient times, he was already regarded as an old man. With such a huge shock, it really might have been too much for him to bear.
The next moment, suddenly—
Ji Yi, who had been standing there stiffly, suddenly dashed out like a madman.
In the blink of an eye—gone.
Zhu Jie stared in shock. He ran incredibly fast. The main thing was that he hadn’t even said a single word before disappearing.
Ji Laoda also stood there blankly, as if he hadn’t reacted yet. Staring stupidly in the direction Ji Yi had vanished, he muttered,
“Where did Erhan go?”
Zhu Jie sighed inwardly.
“Is Father still at home? Did you call a doctor?”
“At—at home!” Ji Laoda replied quickly. Then he suddenly slapped his forehead. “Ah! We forgot to call the doctor!”
What could this family even do? Everything they did was a mess. They were only good at making things worse.
“Then why aren’t you going to get one?” Zhu Jie snapped angrily. “Go find Doctor Sun right now. I’ll head home immediately!”
Then she turned and instructed Huaihua, who was standing nearby: “You stay here and watch the house. Don’t go anywhere. We’ll go check on the Ji family and come back soon.”
Huaihua had been standing there in a daze, trembling slightly and lost in her thoughts. Hearing Zhu Jie’s words, she finally nodded blankly, though she still looked somewhat unable to process what was happening.
After giving her instructions, Zhu Jie ran off first, heading toward the Ji family home at full speed.
Huh?
Gone again?
Ji Laoda rubbed his eyes in disbelief.
Ji Yi and his wife both had legs like the wind! How could they disappear so quickly the moment they started running?
