Inside the spacious study, Old Master Sun sat alone in a chair. He appeared to be reading, but if one looked closely, it was obvious that he wasn’t actually reading.

The book was merely raised in his hands, while his gaze had long since drifted far away.

A faint creaking sound suddenly rang out. Old Master Sun immediately lifted his head in alert. After decades of storms and turmoil, he had developed such vigilance that even while distracted, the slightest sound could still reach his ears.

Yet when he looked up, the door had not moved at all. His heart instantly tightened.

Not good—an expert has come?

He quickly glanced around. But the moment he turned back, he shuddered in fright—the person had somehow already appeared behind him.

“Old brother, long time no see!”

Doctor Sun gave a gloomy smile, a trace of mockery flickering in his eyes.

But Old Master Sun immediately broke out in a cold sweat. “H-how is it you?”

Doctor Sun lightly pointed toward the window on the right side, where a gentle breeze was blowing in.

“Aren’t you going to close the window?”

Old Master Sun hurriedly stood up in a panic, feeling momentarily dazed. Staggering toward the window, he accidentally knocked into the chair beneath him as he rose.

Bang!

The chair crashed to the ground with a loud noise, startling him so much that he nearly jumped.

“Master?” a servant outside asked softly.

“I’m fine!” Old Master Sun quickly answered. “You don’t need to come in!”

His voice was clearly flustered. Even the servant outside couldn’t help frowning slightly, though he still obediently stayed outside.

Only then did Old Master Sun hurry to the window and shut it quickly. But even after closing it, he still didn’t feel at ease. Quietly, he cracked it open a small gap and stretched his head out to look.

Only after confirming once again that no one was outside did he gently close the window.

This series of actions, though quick, gradually helped him regain his composure. When he turned back again, he was no longer as panicked as before. Instead, he looked coldly at Doctor Sun.

“Why have you come?”

“So many years since you cut off contact with the family, old brother. Don’t you ever miss us?” Doctor Sun had already sat down comfortably in the chair. Yet the look he gave Old Master Sun carried a hint of contempt.

“Did the Master send you?” Old Master Sun asked in a low voice.

“Oh, so the Master still exists in your heart?” Doctor Sun said coldly. “I thought you had forgotten long ago.”

Old Master Sun sighed softly. “Fourth Brother, why must you speak to me like that?”

Fourth Brother?

Doctor Sun was actually his younger brother?

So the person in Xiangshui Village with the closest connection to Old Master Sun was actually Doctor Sun. But then why hadn’t anyone seen him visit when relatives gathered before?

“I heard someone is being held in your residence,” Doctor Sun said bluntly. “Let her go.”

“She’s also one of the Master’s people?” Old Master Sun was slightly startled. “That girl is indeed quite pretty. Is she someone the Master plans to send into the palace?”

“Hmph. With that level of intelligence, she’d only cause trouble for the Master if she went,” Doctor Sun scoffed. “She’s just one of my patients. Go tell your precious granddaughter-in-law that your family never had any interest in her. Once she hears that, she won’t keep trying to enter your household. Saves her from pestering endlessly.”

Only after hearing this did Old Master Sun slowly relax.

“That matter isn’t entirely up to me,” he said. “But since you’ve come to ask for her, I’ll certainly find a way to talk to my granddaughter-in-law.”

“Good.” Doctor Sun shot him another gloomy glance, then stood up and prepared to leave.

“Wait!”

Suddenly, Old Master Sun called out to stop him.

“How is the family?”

Doctor Sun’s face instantly turned cold.

“What do you think? You betrayed the Master—how could the family not be implicated?”

“I… I only…” Old Master Sun stammered.

“You were simply blinded by greed,” Doctor Sun sneered. “The Master cultivated you step by step, yet you betrayed him. What more is there to say?”

“No, I wasn’t blinded by greed,” Old Master Sun said with a weary sigh. “I was just afraid… afraid of being discovered. Sometimes I think—if only I hadn’t been the one sent out back then.”

Doctor Sun gave a cold laugh.

“That position was something you fought for yourself.”

Old Master Sun offered no further explanation. His face was full of exhaustion. After a long, powerless sigh, he asked: “Then why did you come to Xiangshui Village? Did the family send you to find me?”
