Old Man Hua was standing in the courtyard, happily enjoying the early spring sunshine. Today was his daughter’s big day. They had found such a good son-in-law—how could they not be delighted?
At this moment, everything looked especially wonderful to him. The sunlight seemed brighter, the breeze fresher, and even the sedan chair being carried toward him looked particularly grand.
Wait! That sedan chair wasn’t grand at all. It was exactly the same one the Sun family had used that morning to carry the bride—only the men carrying it were different, and they weren’t wearing festive clothes.
He was squinting at it with a cheerful smile when he saw the sedan chair heading straight toward his house again.
Eh? What was going on? Were they here to fetch the new bride again? That couldn’t be right, could it?
The sedan chair suddenly slammed to the ground with a loud thud, as if it had been thrown down. A person rolled straight out of it.
Old Man Hua took a closer look and cried out in alarm.
Oh heavens! Wasn’t that his precious daughter?!
“Feixue! Feixue! What’s wrong with you?” Old Man Hua asked in shock.
Hua Feixue was curled up on the ground, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. She stared in terror at the ground before her feet, not even daring to lift her head to look at anyone.
Crash!
The sound of something shattering rang out—like a bowl breaking. Though it was only a light noise, Hua Feixue trembled violently at the sound.
Old Man Hua quickly looked in the direction of the noise. In the distance, Old Madam Hua had seen everything and was so frightened that the bowl in her hands slipped from her grasp and shattered all over the ground.
“Feixue, why are you back? Where are your clothes? What happened to you?” Old Madam Hua kept shouting, her voice growing sharper and louder with every word.
The piercing cries made Hua Feixue raise her head again. Big tears fell from her eyes one after another. Yet she only cried and refused to say a single word.
“Don’t just cry! Tell your mother what happened!” Old Madam Hua grew even more anxious, shouting at her daughter. “Speak!”
Hua Feixue helplessly opened her mouth. Before any words could come out, they were completely drowned by hoarse sobs.
With a low cry, she suddenly stood up, said nothing, and rushed straight back into her room.
Just then, Ji Yi came back carrying Hua Feiwu on his back, while Sister-in-law You and Zhu Jie supported Madam Hua as they hurried in as well.
When the Hua couple saw this sight, they nearly fainted on the spot.
“What happened? Weren’t you all fine when you left earlier? How did everyone end up like this in such a short time?” Old Madam Hua shrieked in disbelief.
Old Man Hua also shouted anxiously, “Isn’t today supposed to be a joyous day? Did you run into some villains? How did you get beaten like this?”
“My dear brother, we were tricked!” Old Madam Ji began shouting dramatically. “That wife of the Sun family refused to agree. As soon as the bridal sedan reached their door, they beat us and sent us right back!”
She vividly reenacted the entire incident with exaggerated gestures, adding plenty of embellishment.
After hearing it, the Hua couple were completely stunned.
Their precious daughter had suffered such humiliation—sent back in the bridal sedan right at the door, and in front of so many people?
How could the Hua family ever face others again?
And how could their beloved daughter ever marry in the future?
“N-No… that can’t be possible, right? She’s a woman who can’t even bear children, yet she’s still that arrogant? Would Old Master Sun really ignore it?” Old Madam Hua said, still unwilling to believe it.
Old Madam Ji rolled her eyes and replied in amazement, “You don’t know—his wife is a County Princess! Extremely capable too. Even the maids she brought are dressed better than the landlord’s wives around here. Her guards are all big and imposing. I bet even Old Master Sun wouldn’t dare argue with her.”
“Even if she’s a County Princess, she can’t possibly fight with her mother-in-law and elders like that!” Old Man Hua said, still full of disbelief.
Old Madam Ji let out a cold laugh.
“She didn’t fight with her mother-in-law or elders at all. She didn’t even say a harsh word to her own husband, nor did they argue.”
“Then how did our Feiwu and Feixue get beaten?” Old Man Hua demanded, even more agitated.
“That’s right—the only ones who got beaten were our Hua family!” Old Madam Ji said angrily. “My dear brother, I can see it clearly now. They were just bullying us!”
