“Your younger sister seems quite generous and straightforward. Although I felt an instant connection with her at first sight, I still don’t really know what kind of person she is, or what her usual personality is like,” Sun Shaohui continued.
“She’s fiery,” Ji Yi said without any hesitation.
Sun Shaohui’s eyes widened. Fiery? She hadn’t noticed that at all.
“She never lets herself suffer even the slightest loss,” Ji Yi added.
Never lets herself suffer any loss? Was he saying she was selfish? Sun Shaohui couldn’t help frowning.
“And she easily resorts to violence! If someone provokes her, she can smash that person’s head open!” As he spoke, Zhu Jie’s past “heroic deeds” naturally appeared in Ji Yi’s mind—Hu Sanliu’s pig-like swollen face and Ji Mei’s scarred scalp. She really had shown no mercy.
Sun Shaohui’s eyes widened even more. Violent tendencies too? Seriously? She raised her head and looked carefully at Zhu Jie in the distance. Zhu Jie was lowering her head shyly, murmuring something softly that couldn’t be heard clearly. Someone like that had violent tendencies? She truly couldn’t see it.
“Does your sister not have a single advantage?” Sun Shaohui said in astonishment. A woman like that—and her brother actually liked her?
“Does being tough count as an advantage?” Ji Yi asked seriously with a teasing smile.
Sun Shaohui’s face darkened. “I don’t think so.”
“Then what about being domineering?” Ji Yi asked again in a small voice, testing the waters.
“Probably not,” Sun Shaohui replied, her voice getting softer as well.
Hearing that, Ji Yi seemed troubled and couldn’t say a word for a long time. Well then… were his sister’s merits really that hard to find?
“Then she must have done some good things before, right?” Sun Shaohui said bluntly, the disappointment on her face practically overflowing.
Ji Yi tilted his head and thought seriously for a moment before slowly saying, “She once bought clothes for me.”
“What’s so special about a younger sister buying her brother clothes?”
“She sold her own clothes to buy them—and didn’t buy any for herself,” Ji Yi said quietly.
Sun Shaohui was slightly stunned. She didn’t understand the bitterness of poor families, but selling one’s own clothes to buy something for someone else… somehow, that felt touching.
“She also bought me meat buns and plain noodles,” Ji Yi suddenly said with a warm smile. “Although she ate even more than I did.”
That smile was truly warm. Sun Shaohui couldn’t help feeling a little dazed. The man actually looked quite handsome—just a little foolish.
“Sometimes I think she’s like a blade of grass. No matter where you throw her, she can survive well on her own. Even if she accidentally falls into hardened earth, she can still struggle to carve out a place for herself. But sometimes she feels like a rose—covered in thorns. She pretends to be strong, but in reality she’s delicate and needs someone to protect her.”
A flower? Grass? Why did Sun Shaohui sense a trace of heartache in his words? Was this the kind of love an elder brother had for his sister?
Just as Sun Shaohui was feeling surprised, Ji Yi suddenly changed his tone. A big smile appeared on his face as he continued, “Actually, her heart is still simple and kind, with a bit of playful mischief. When she treats someone well, she’s sincere—without concealment or pretension. She doesn’t fawn over the powerful or trample the weak.”
That doesn’t seem right, Sun Shaohui immediately sneered inwardly. That cute and innocent sister of his seemed to be trying her hardest to show off right now just to climb up the social ladder!
She didn’t believe that “Ji Mei” truly loved her brother without reason. Wasn’t she just attracted to his money and power? Like a dung beetle spotting a dung ball—no, her brother wasn’t a dung ball, but “Ji Mei” was definitely the dung beetle!
“Hey—why are they holding hands?” Sun Shaohui suddenly cried out.
Ji Yi immediately looked up. In the distance, the two of them had somehow ended up holding hands. Though both had their heads lowered shyly, Zhu Jie hadn’t pushed away the hand that was grabbing hers.
In an instant, the little flame in Ji Yi’s heart began to flare wildly. A murderous impulse surged up inside him. What is she doing?
Almost in the blink of an eye, Sun Shaohui felt her vision blur. The man who had been chatting with her just moments ago had already rushed out. At some point he had switched back to that icy expression that could freeze people to death, charging straight toward her elder brother. What was he planning to do?
Zhu Jie kept her head lowered shyly, letting Sun Shaoyan hold her hand. Even her fingertips could feel the heat of his skin and the faint trembling of his excitement.
Her lips pressed together as a mischievous smile crept onto them. Yet she deliberately murmured softly, “Young Master Sun.” Her voice was low and seductive.
Sun Shaoyan’s heart skipped another beat. What a fascinating woman! Her hand was so delicate, not at all like that of a rural woman who had worked the fields. The smooth softness made him want to touch even more.
Just as his hand began creeping further, wanting to grasp more of that softness and hold it tightly, suddenly a hand came down out of nowhere and slapped his away heavily, breaking their contact.
Without that soft touch that had made his heart race, he suddenly felt an emptiness inside. The lingering sense of loss made him lift his head angrily.
“Brother Ji!” When Sun Shaoyan raised his head in embarrassment and anger, he immediately choked back his words. The person who had come wasn’t anyone else—it was Ji Yi, the man who was about to become his brother-in-law. Sun Shaoyan’s voice immediately softened, even sounding respectful as he addressed him. After all, he was planning to marry the man’s sister—he couldn’t be too reckless.
But Ji Yi didn’t respond at all. He simply grabbed Zhu Jie’s hand and strode away toward the exit. The furious look on his face was exactly like a man who had caught someone in bed—humiliated, yet still forcibly suppressing his anger from exploding.
