There was no one in the corridor. As Zhu Jie walked along searching, she heard voices coming from a large room ahead. She quickened her steps, but just as she was about to enter, the voices from inside startled her.
“A country bumpkin woman actually keeps calling me ‘little sister’ and treating me like I’m her elder sister. If she wants to be my sister, she’d better see if she’s even worthy of it!”
Huh? Who’s talking? Why does that voice sound so much like Miss Sun’s? Zhu Jie immediately became alert. She quietly crouched by the window, poked a tiny hole through the window paper with her finger, and peered inside.
Well now—wasn’t it Miss Sun, Madam Sun, and Old Madam Sun!
What were they talking about? Zhu Jie pricked up her ears and listened carefully. She heard Madam Sun shout in a low voice, “Why wouldn’t she be worthy? She’ll be your sister-in-law in the future!”
“Pah! Someone like her isn’t even worthy of carrying my shoes, let alone being my sister-in-law!” Sun Shaohui cursed even more viciously. “Even the maids around me come from better backgrounds than her. She’s just a coarse woman who eats sweet potatoes all day!”
A coarse woman who eats sweet potatoes all day? Wait… was she talking about her just now?
Zhu Jie froze, her jaw practically dropping to the ground.
Seriously? She was the one who had been clinging to her, calling her “elder sister” this and that. Zhu Jie had only gone along with it and called her “little sister” a few times. And now she was unhappy about it? What—did she think Zhu Jie was trying to climb above her?
Don’t be ridiculous!
Back in the day, even if Zhu Jie were willing to acknowledge someone as her sister, it would depend on whether she felt like it. Otherwise, she’d have them beaten half to death with sticks. Who allowed them to randomly claim family ties?
While Zhu Jie was lost in her thoughts, Sun Shaohui inside the room grew angrier and angrier.
“I’ve finally figured it out. Those people from the Ji family all think the sky’s the limit for them. Who do they think they are? Every single one of them dares to try and climb up to our Sun family. Originally, if Ji Mei had come in by herself to be my brother’s second wife, I would’ve just turned a blind eye. She’s not great, but if she became a second wife, it wouldn’t matter that much!”
A second wife? Ji Mei?
Zhu Jie couldn’t help but snort coldly. Weren’t they the ones who first spread the word that they wanted to marry Ji Mei? If they hadn’t started those rumors, would Old Madam Ji and Ji Mei have even had such thoughts?
“But today she actually tried to matchmake me with that foolish brother of hers. What’s this supposed to mean? Has their whole family latched onto our Sun family now? Do they think we’re easy to bully? Are we really that worthless? Am I so undesirable that I can’t get married?” Sun Shaohui continued spitting curses. “Mother, today I’m going to teach that Ji Mei a lesson so she’ll understand—our Sun family isn’t so easy to marry into!”
Teach Ji Mei a lesson?
Zhu Jie’s face changed slightly as she listened. Wait… hold on a moment! It seemed she had misunderstood something.
No… actually, she had deliberately misled them before.
Oh no.
They had mistaken her for Ji Mei!
Only then did Zhu Jie finally realize it. The person the Sun family wanted to bring home as the second wife wasn’t Ji Mei at all—it was her, Zhu Jie!
She couldn’t help but sneer. They really had some nerve, thinking of making her a second wife. Did they think she had the courage of a bear and a leopard to even consider such nonsense?
“What? She really tried to match you with that foolish brother of hers?” Old Madam Sun asked, her voice immediately turning displeased.
“Exactly! Like a mangy dog trying to bite the moon—completely overestimating itself!” Sun Shaohui rolled her eyes dramatically. “Mother, even that Ji Yi admitted himself that he’s stupid. You know that.”
Madam Sun’s gaze, however, fell on the poem Zhu Jie had copied earlier. She sighed softly.
“Still… this poem really is well written.”
“What’s so good about it? They even claimed it was written by Lu You. Do you believe that? I certainly don’t!” Sun Shaohui sneered. “Did Lu You ever write such a poem? Maybe I’m ignorant, but I’ve never heard of it!”
Old Madam Sun hesitated. “They all say it exists. Perhaps it’s simply one we’ve never heard of. Could Lu You have visited Xiangshui Village and left it here, unknown to the world? Maybe we should ask your grandfather?”
But Madam Sun said admiringly, “Can’t you see it yet? I actually admire Miss Ji’s intelligence and talent. She probably came up with it on the spot to cover for her brother.”
Hearing this, Zhu Jie couldn’t help but freeze.
That poem was written by Lu You! How had it suddenly become something she composed?
Looks like the Grand Secretary’s household wasn’t very well educated after all—none of the women seemed particularly cultured.
