Having martial skills really made a difference. Even though she just tossed it casually, the red ribbon shot forward like an arrow, cutting through the air, soaring straight up, looping in midair, and heading directly toward a high branch.
But just when Zhu Jie thought the ribbon would surely hang neatly on the branch, something unexpected happened—the wooden tag beneath the ribbon twirled twice on the branch, tracing a perfect parabola, and then plunged straight down again.
“Huh? What’s going on?” Miss Sun and Young Master Sun both widened their eyes in surprise.
Zhu Jie was taken aback too. The wooden tag, tugging the ribbon along, hurtled straight toward Ji Yi. Instinctively, Ji Yi raised his hand and caught it—yes, he caught it perfectly!
“What does it mean that your brother caught it?” Miss Sun whispered, her eyes full of astonishment.
Zhu Jie gave an awkward laugh and hurriedly explained, “What could my own brother mean! Hehe, that first try didn’t count—it was thrown too hard!” Saying that, she snatched the wooden tag from Ji Yi’s hand.
Ji Yi had been reading the characters on the tag, but before he could finish, Zhu Jie grabbed it away. A hollow feeling crept into him, as if something was slipping from his grasp.
Looking up, Ji Yi saw Zhu Jie standing awkwardly in front of him, forcing a sheepish smile. “It’s fine. Next time, you’ll definitely throw it well!” He watched as she raised her hand to toss it again.
This time, Zhu Jie took the throw more seriously. She hadn’t realized this thing was so tricky! She weighed the wooden tag carefully, estimating its weight, and measured the throw perfectly.
With a light jump, she executed a textbook throwing motion, just like shooting a basketball.
The red ribbon fluttered in the wind, and this time, her motion was much more graceful. The ribbon sailed toward a lower branch, twirling…
Wait—what? Zhu Jie’s mouth dropped open. Did she do it wrong again?
The wooden tag spun in the air once more, just like a basketball spinning in a hoop, and then—plop—it fell straight down!
Of course! Why hadn’t she thought of it? Basketballs always fall to the ground; she just hadn’t chosen the right posture before!
Just as she lamented her lack of skill, a soft clap sound rang out—huh? The wooden tag landed perfectly in Ji Yi’s hands again.
“No way! He caught it again? Could this be some divine message?” This time, Miss Sun and Young Master Sun weren’t just surprised—they were outright curious, both turning to Zhu Jie.
Zhu Jie looked embarrassed. Divine message, my foot. Superstition doesn’t exist, but she couldn’t say that—she still had plans to trick Miss Sun! At this point, she had to indulge in superstition for dramatic effect.
“Yes! I heard this tree is very spiritual… could it really be?” Zhu Jie laughed nervously. “Maybe the gods are telling me that my marriage fate lies in my brother’s hands?”
“No, it’s telling you that in this lifetime, it’s going to land in my hands!” Ji Yi replied calmly.
Miss Sun burst out laughing. She still thought Zhu Jie and Ji Yi were siblings, so hearing that made it seem like Zhu Jie was destined to remain an old maid!
“That won’t happen. Miss Ji is stunning and intelligent—she’ll definitely find a good match!” Young Master Sun quickly tried to smooth things over. “Maybe there’s some cosmic mystery beyond our understanding.”
Cosmic mystery? Zhu Jie snorted. Isn’t that just gravity? My skills just weren’t right, that’s all!
“Why don’t you throw it again, Miss Ji? Maybe the heavens will give an even clearer message!” Miss Sun encouraged from the side—clearly, she thought the chaos wasn’t enough yet.
Zhu Jie felt a flash of indignation. There’s no way her skills were really that poor!
Fuming, she strode up to Ji Yi, snatched the wooden tag, and as she turned to leave, shot him a sharp glare. “Catch it again, and I’ll chop off your hand!” she threatened, her eyes shooting daggers like a thousand arrows piercing the heart.
But Ji Yi acted as if he hadn’t seen anything, casually shrugging and flashing a mischievous smile.
