Ji Mei’s face was almost completely smeared with blood. Her hair was in disarray, her clothes filthy, and her body dotted with dripping blood. The sight of her was beyond mere dishevelment—it was terrifying enough to scare ghosts walking alone at night!
Yes, at this moment, she looked far more fearsome than any ghost. What had happened to her?
Ji Mei charged in as if insane, ignoring everyone in her path, heading straight for Second Sister-in-law You. Her expression was pure murder.
“Mother, help! Save me!” Second Sister-in-law You cried, scrambling to hide behind Old Madam Ji.
But Ji Mei seemed blinded by rage, paying no heed to Old Madam Ji. She swung the hoe downward with deadly force—this was a strike that could easily kill!
“No!” In the next instant, Zhu Jie screamed and rushed forward, positioning herself in front of Old Madam Ji. She tried, with her slender arms, to block the iron hoe in Ji Mei’s hands. This was sheer selfless courage—protecting her mother-in-law with her life!
Almost simultaneously, Ji Yi charged in. There was a sharp clang as the hoe flew from Ji Mei’s hands to the ground. The dramatic scene of Zhu Jie sacrificing herself to save her mother-in-law didn’t fully play out.
“Mother! Are you okay?” At this moment, Zhu Jie was still the first to speak with concern.
The onlookers murmured among themselves—what a daughter-in-law, where could one ever find such a woman!
Old Madam Ji, however, shoved Zhu Jie out of the way and stepped directly in front of Ji Mei, shouting in alarm, “Are you insane? Even your own mother?”
Hearing this, Ji Mei seemed to snap out of a daze, as if waking from a nightmare. She suddenly broke into wailing cries again. “Mother, you have to stand up for me!”
Seeing Ji Mei’s bloodshot eyes filled with both grievance and anger, Old Madam Ji shuddered. “What… what has happened to you?”
Ji Mei’s grief only intensified. “Mother, Sister-in-law wants to beat me to death!”
Sister-in-law You quickly defended herself. “Mother, no! It’s she who’s trying to kill me!”
“Trying to kill you?” Ji Mei’s voice shot up eight notes in pitch. Pointing at the bleeding wound on her forehead, she screamed, “Trying to kill you? Look at my head! Am I that stupid?”
Zhu Jie wanted to laugh, hearing her say that—but she couldn’t. Not now, when she had to help.
“Mother, this… this might be a misunderstanding. Sister-in-law did hit Ji Mei, but… but she may not have meant it seriously!” Zhu Jie stammered, putting on a timid expression.
Surprisingly, it worked. Like tossing fuel on a fire, Ji Mei immediately shouted at the top of her lungs, “Not meant seriously? That hit looked like she wanted to kill me!”
She lifted the wet strands of hair stuck to her forehead and spat out, “Mother, look! The blood won’t stop!”
Old Madam Ji, seeing this, cried out in alarm, “Oh heavens! This will leave a scar!”
Ji Mei’s crying intensified. “Mother, tell me—isn’t she trying to kill me?”
“I… I really wasn’t trying to hit Meizi!” Second Sister-in-law You stammered, her heart pounding at the sight of the bloody wound, her voice trembling.
“If you didn’t want to hit her, then who did you want to hit?” Unexpectedly, a cold voice came from the side. Everyone turned to see Ji Yi staring at her, his eyes sharp and interrogative.
Sister-in-law You shivered and stood awkwardly, unable to answer.
It wasn’t that she didn’t know the answer—she simply couldn’t say it! At this moment, what could she possibly say? Could she loudly, clearly admit that she had actually meant to hit Zhu Jie instead?
Zhu Jie, seeing her embarrassed expression, couldn’t help but silently chuckle. Ji Yi had just hit the nail on the head with one question—this was truly a clever question!
