“Really? You saved her?” Even Old Madam Ji couldn’t believe it. Her voice rose in shock, her eyes wide with disbelief.
But Ji Mei froze on the spot, momentarily at a loss for how to respond.
Outside the courtyard, a crowd had already gathered. These were the villagers who had once pointed out the moles on her back! Everyone was straining their ears, eager to hear. If she denied it and said she had been beaten by Zhu Jie, Zhu Jie would surely face a scolding.
And her? Her own injuries were already fully visible—there was nothing left to hide, nothing to make up for. She would only be laughed at.
But now, if she went along with Zhu Jie’s words, at least she would appear brave and righteous. People might even say something good about her, or at least spare her when they laughed.
Ji Mei hesitated. She looked at Zhu Jie, at her unmasked—almost exaggerated—concern. Two paths lay before her: be a hero, or be a clown. It all came down to one sentence.
“Yes!” Suddenly, Ji Mei stifled a sob and choked out her words. “How could I just watch Second Sister-in-law die like that? It’s not her fault—it’s all my fault. She doesn’t know how to use a hoe properly. I should have taught her. She almost got hurt because of me too.”
Her heart was filled with grievance, but her face had to show responsibility. Sniffling, she added, “It’s all my fault. Don’t blame Second Sister-in-law!”
As soon as she said this, everyone gasped. Old Madam Ji even shrieked, “What? What did you say?”
Ji Mei glanced at the villagers outside and raised her voice. “Mother, Second Sister-in-law came to our family alone—it wasn’t easy for her. This time she just wanted to help at home; her intentions were good. As for me… it was all coincidence. I… I don’t blame Second Sister-in-law at all!” By the end, she was crying in frustration.
“Little sister!” Zhu Jie began crying too, stepping quickly over and embracing the sobbing Ji Mei. The two of them clung to each other in public as if they truly shared a deep bond, crying together in full view.
When Ji Yi returned, he witnessed this scene and was stunned. What… what was happening? While he was fetching water, his wife and sister had suddenly become so close?
Was the world changing too fast, or had he missed something? He looked in shock at the people at the doorway—almost the entire village had come. Some were even moved to tears, murmuring, “The Ji family really is harmonious!”
“Oh, if only our family could be this good!”
“Ah, my sister-in-law isn’t this understanding. If I wanted to die, she’d probably hand me the knife herself!”
“You can’t die just for your sister-in-law! This is about hearts exchanging hearts!”
Listening to the villagers, Ji Mei’s shoulders shook uncontrollably, but she could only swallow her tears. Alas, today’s events could no longer be explained clearly!
Zhu Jie held Ji Mei tightly, burying her face in her shoulder, avoiding everyone’s gaze. Yes, she had to hide herself at this moment, because she was laughing—she couldn’t suppress it, and her shoulder trembled lightly. It was laughter!
At the back of the crowd, a few people observed coldly. There were no tears, no warmth in their eyes—only a sense of killing intent.
“This kind of woman cannot be allowed to stay!”
“Exactly. She’s too good at acting. Master might be fooled by her!”
“She’s not simple,” someone said, then suddenly laughed. The laughter carried a hint of approval.
“Old Sun, what do you mean? You’re actually satisfied? Master’s already entangled with this mysterious woman, and you can still laugh?”
“As long as Master can laugh, I can laugh too!” Old Sun replied nonchalantly, laughing. The figure leaving in the distance was none other than the peculiar Doctor Sun.
