Zhang Pozi was stunned by Chun Xi, instinctively recoiling as she pointed at her.
Shen Qingyu recovered enough to shout angrily, “Men! Seize her!”
At his command, the attendants Shen Qingyu had brought tried to rush in, but Chun Xi swung her leg, flipping a bench to block the doorway, and glared at him: “Third Young Master, this is the government courier station. Are you sure you want to make a scene here?”
Chun Xi spun onto the bench, one leg on the ground and the other on the seat. She exuded not an ounce of feminine grace, looking more like a ruthless bandit chief than a lady.
Shen Qingyu instantly felt a sharp pain in his stomach.
Cao Chun Xi being out of favor was one thing; causing a scene at the government station was another. Once Shen Qingyuan returned, he’d surely pay for this.
After thinking it over, Shen Qingyu had no choice but to swallow his anger and grit his teeth: “I won’t cause trouble—but move out of the way!”
Chun Xi didn’t budge, only raising an eyebrow.
Fuming, Shen Qingyu yelled, “You kicked me like this! I should at least see a doctor!”
Did this woman have no eyes? Couldn’t she see he was nearly in agony?
Chun Xi had been careful. Shen Qingyu might have some bruises that would hurt for a few days, but nothing serious. Since he voluntarily asked to see a doctor, she didn’t stop him—she merely moved to one end of the bench and said, “Two of you, take the Third Young Master to the clinic.”
Two attendants stepped over the bench and helped Shen Qingyu up.
Feeling bolstered by the presence of others, Shen Qingyu passed by Chun Xi and hissed, “Just you wait. I won’t let this slide!”
Chun Xi didn’t flinch. With a curved smile, she said, “Fine. As long as you can take a beating, I’m ready anytime.”
Shaking her fist slightly, Chun Xi made Shen Qingyu’s expression change; he dared not argue further and hurried away.
The crowd came and went in a rush. Were it not for Chun Xi sitting like a bandit blocking the doorway, Mo Yunwan would have thought she’d imagined the entire scene.
Zhang Pozi was equally incredulous. She couldn’t help scolding: “Cao Er! How dare you! Don’t you know hitting your master is insubordination?”
“My master has only one lord, no one else,” Chun Xi shot back without hesitation, then looked at Mo Yunwan: “Master has always been at odds with Third Young Master. Young Madam, don’t you know that?”
Of course, Mo Yunwan knew.
Her aunt had climbed the social ladder to become Lady of Qingyuan Marquis, not Shen Lang’s biological mother, and had always harbored ill intentions toward him. Sending her to marry Shen Lang was meant to give her aunt more legitimacy in seizing the dowry left by Shen Lang’s mother.
Although Mo Yunwan was Shen Lang’s wife, her bloodline was still that of the Mo family, so naturally she would side with her aunt.
Moreover, her aunt held secrets about her that could never be revealed.
Mo Yunwan clenched her silk handkerchief and shook her head in disapproval: “I know Shen Lang isn’t particularly close to Third Young Master, but they are family. Since Shen Lang trusts you so much, you should mediate and keep the brothers at peace, not make the conflict worse.”
Chun Xi seemed to reflect on this, as if persuaded by Mo Yunwan’s words. Just as Mo Yunwan was about to continue, Chun Xi said: “Now I understand why Master doesn’t like the Young Madam. It turns out you’re not on the same page with him.”
Chun Xi’s words were blunt, hitting Mo Yunwan’s deepest fear.
She had long excelled at feigning weakness to elicit pity, but back then Shen Qingyuan had never fallen for it. If she still couldn’t capture his heart now, her only path forward was death.
Mo Yunwan paled further. Zhang Pozi, seeing her disheartened, immediately chimed in: “Impertinent! Matters between masters are none of your business. Master Shen has not remarried all these years for the sake of his wife. How could he dislike her?”
Hearing Zhang Pozi’s words, Mo Yunwan’s complexion improved slightly.
Indeed, as long as Shen Lang had not remarried, the title of First Young Madam of the Shen household could only belong to her—no one could take it away.
Thinking this, Mo Yunwan clutched her chest and leaned forward on the bed, breathing shallowly. Zhang Pozi immediately said, “Madam, you’re unwell and need rest. You should go lie down.”
Chun Xi had no intention of leaving. She was about to speak when Shen Qingyuan’s cold, commanding voice rang out: “What are you all doing here?”
Mo Yunwan trembled and lifted her head. Her eyes were red at the corners, sparkling with tears—both pitiful and enchanting.
“Shen Lang… you’re back.”
Her voice was softer and more melodic than before, the best possible posture to greet Shen Qingyuan.
Yet Shen Qingyuan remained unmoved. He first looked over Chun Xi, ensuring she was unharmed, then his gaze fell on the pile of clothes on the floor.
They were Chun Xi’s clothes.
Shen Qingyuan’s expression turned icy. Though he said nothing, both Mo Yunwan and Zhang Pozi could feel his anger.
Zhang Pozi shivered and quickly picked up the clothes, saying, “Madam can now get out of bed and walk. She didn’t want to trouble the residence, so she came to stay here with Master. I was just tidying up the room and accidentally dropped Brother Cao Er’s clothes. I apologize, Brother Cao Er.”
Zhang Pozi brought the clothes to Chun Xi and apologized gently, in stark contrast to her previous haughty demeanor.
Chun Xi didn’t take them. She was about to speak when Shen Qingyuan’s sharp question cut in: “Who gave you the authority to let people into my room?”
Though he addressed Chun Xi, everyone could hear the anger in his voice was directed at Mo Yunwan.
He neither wanted to visit Mo Yunwan at the Liang residence nor allow her to enter his room casually.
It was as if, in his eyes, she was a stranger.
Shen Qingyuan’s coldness made Mo Yunwan blush with humiliation and sink further onto the bed.
“I know Shen Lang still isn’t ready to accept me. I shouldn’t have come to disturb you. But now I’m injured and can’t move freely. Until I recover, could Shen Lang take me in for a while?”
Zhang Pozi urged as well: “Madam was already feeling unwell. Please allow her to rest first. Whatever needs saying can wait until she recovers.”
Mo Yunwan lay on the bed, brow furrowed, tears streaming, her soft waist and curves subtly revealed.
Zhang Pozi discreetly observed Shen Qingyuan’s expression.
With such a beauty lying there, any man who wasn’t blind wouldn’t have the heart to trouble her.
Shen Qingyuan wasn’t blind—he was just a little hard-hearted.
He didn’t look at Mo Yunwan at all, simply coldly commanded Chun Xi: “You let them in. You have one minute to get them out of here!”
Chun Xi: “……”
Master… I said they snuck in while I wasn’t paying attention. Would you believe that?
