Mo Yunwan had injured her ribs again from the fall. After the doctor re-bandaged her, she was ordered to remain in bed and rest.
Shen Qingyuan didn’t want to stay by her side; only Chen Xi and Qing Shu accompanied her.
The next day, Lady Liang herself came to the clinic to visit.
Although Liang Weimin looked a bit weathered, Lady Liang had taken excellent care of herself. She was plump, radiant, and exuded a commanding elegance.
Unlike her husband, Lady Liang was less approachable. Her high eyebrows and sharp features showed she didn’t even notice Chen Xi and Qing Shu. Yet, upon entering, she held Mo Yunwan and addressed her warmly as “little sister.”
“My dear sister, you must have suffered so much over the years. I can hardly imagine how you endured until today.”
Mo Yunwan lay on the bed, pale, and tears welled up at the genuine concern. “At that time, Master Shen was on official duty pursuing a criminal in another province. My aunt, worried something might happen to him, insisted I marry him. I truly wanted to leave a legacy for Master Shen, so I risked my life to find him, but along the way I encountered bandits and accidentally fell off a cliff.”
At this point, Mo Yunwan sobbed uncontrollably. Lady Liang hurriedly comforted her: “My dear sister, when Master Shen’s life was uncertain, not only did you agree to marry him, but you dared to travel thousands of miles to find him. Such courage and devotion are truly rare in the world.”
Lady Liang’s praise touched Mo Yunwan deeply. Her tone turned solemn and heroic: “Though this marriage was arranged by my aunt, I had long held feelings for Master Shen. If I hadn’t fallen and lost my memory, I would have risked everything to return to him.”
“So you had lost your memory… how tragic.”
Lady Liang empathized fully. Mo Yunwan wiped her tears and continued: “I worked for a divine healer to repay their kindness. It wasn’t until the end of last year that some scattered memories returned. I left the healer to search for my family but unexpectedly encountered the flood in Xuzhou. My packed belongings were swept away, and I had no choice but to live with the other refugees in the charitable hall. Perhaps heaven took pity, for I ended up meeting Master Shen again.”
Finally reunited with her love, Lady Liang was moved to hug Mo Yunwan and cry.
Once Mo Yunwan’s emotions settled, Lady Liang tentatively asked: “Dear sister, during your time in Xuzhou, was anyone mean to you? If so, tell me immediately—I will have them bound and made to kowtow and apologize!”
Mo Yunwan shook her head without hesitation: “No. Lord Liang managed the relief efforts admirably. Soon after the flood, all the refugees were properly settled, and the charitable halls were well-managed by the authorities. I was safe and was not mistreated in any way.”
Lady Liang’s guarded expression softened into a sincere smile. She immediately took the golden bracelet from her own wrist and placed it on Mo Yunwan’s hand.
“My dear sister, your loyalty and gratitude touch me. From now on, consider me your real sister. If Master Shen dares to betray you, I will be the first to object!”
Lady Liang was generous and bold. Mo Yunwan, unrestrained, gently held the bracelet and spoke softly: “Wan Niang greets elder sister.”
With the kinship established, Lady Liang didn’t hesitate. She immediately instructed Chen Xi: “Go find a soft sedan chair and bring my little sister to the Liang residence to recuperate.”
Qing Shu felt this was inappropriate and was about to refuse, but Chen Xi spoke first: “It’s wonderful that madam allows my lady to recover at your residence. My lord is always frugal and didn’t bring much money this trip, so I don’t know where to borrow a sedan chair…”
Before she finished, one of Lady Liang’s maids handed her a silver ingot: “Turn right after leaving and go two streets down—there’s a carriage service. Haggle if you can. The rest is your reward.”
Chen Xi’s face lit up. She happily thanked the maid and went with Qing Shu to rent the chair.
After they left, Lady Liang had a doctor prepare top-quality tonics for Mo Yunwan.
Out of sight, a mocking smile curved her lips.
She had thought the imperial commissioner would be capable, yet before he could even start the investigation, a “resurrected” madam appeared.
A weak young woman, missing for years, would be at risk even if she returned home, let alone be accepted by her husband’s family. No matter what this Madam Shen experienced in Xuzhou, she had to endure and report that the imperial relief efforts were timely and effective, maintaining peace in the city.
No need for witnesses—this Madam Shen would do all she could to support them quietly.
The clinic wasn’t far from the Liang residence. Chen Xi spent fifty coins to rent the soft sedan chair and thirty more to hire two men to carry it.
She weighed the remaining coins, feeling slightly mercenary.
Qing Shu quietly whispered: “Madam, I think you should return the silver to Lady Liang. Otherwise, it might reflect badly on my lord.”
“Bad? How could it? This small reward can hardly be considered bribery.”
True, it wasn’t bribery, but anyone seeing this might think the lord’s dignified appearance was a facade.
Qing Shu was about to argue further, but Chen Xi exclaimed: “I was even going to share half with you, but since you don’t want it, I’ll keep it all!”
“……”
The Liang household staff acted quickly. By the time Mo Yunwan was carried back, her room was fully prepared.
The room was arranged to suit a lady’s tastes, with heavy curtains and fragrant incense.
Chen Xi’s eyes immediately caught the vivid Sichuan embroidery screen, priceless Ru porcelain vases, delicate cloud-patterned silk, and a high-quality nanmu wood canopy bed.
Though fresh and elegant, the bedroom exuded wealth—completely different from the simplicity Shen Qingyuan had received during Liang Weimin’s welcome.
Lady Liang had arranged a full staff of maids and attendants to care for Mo Yunwan. Chen Xi and Qing Shu were soon sent out.
The stewardess said sternly: “The madam’s attendants will care for Madam Shen. As men, it’s inappropriate for you to stay in the rear quarters, so you’ll have to share the servants’ room.”
Qing Shu didn’t mind, but Chen Xi couldn’t bear to share the small quarters with him. Just as he was about to refuse, Chen Xi quickly said: “Not a problem! As long as I can stay near the little madam, I don’t care where we sleep.”
Beyond the threshold, the stewardess called a young servant to take them to the servants’ quarters.
Chen Xi adapted quickly, and by the time they arrived, she had become fast friends with the servant, Zhou Er.
By evening, Shen Qingyuan arrived at the Liang residence after a busy day. He saw Chen Xi standing on a stool, eating fried peanuts and draping her arm around Zhou Er’s shoulders.
“Brother Cao Er, only now do I know what it means to meet too late in life!”
“Brother Zhou, from now on you are my true elder brother!”
Just as the two were about to hug in mock tears, Shen Qingyuan strode forward and pulled them behind him.
“Huh? My lord, you’re here!”
Chen Xi smiled happily. Shen Qingyuan pushed Zhou Er aside and said heavily: “Continue your fun. I need to speak with my attendant.”
