“Did you really not receive my letter?”
Feng Yinyin showed hesitation. Seeing her waver, Su Yang quickly said, “Of course not. My feelings for you are sincere. After passing the imperial examination, all I could think about was marrying you in glory. If I had known something had happened to your family, how could I have remained indifferent?”
Every word he spoke sounded earnest, making him appear deeply affectionate.
Feng Yinyin was disgusted by his act. She lowered her eyes slightly so he wouldn’t see the hatred in them.
“But after I came to the capital, I asked around. Since becoming a jinshi, Brother Su has been going out daily to socialize. Coming to the General’s residence today, you’re clearly trying to climb into the Xiao family and become their son-in-law. If we hadn’t run into each other, you probably would have forgotten all about me, wouldn’t you?”
“This is complete nonsense!”
Su Yang raised his voice, speaking with righteous indignation:
“Yinyin, when my father passed away, it was your grandfather and uncle who took in my mother and me. And it was you who comforted and encouraged me when I was at my lowest. All these years, my food, clothing, and even the expenses for coming to the capital for the exams were provided by your uncle. By all logic and feeling, I would only love you in this lifetime. If I couldn’t even do that, would I still be human?”
Of course you’re not human.
You knew full well how much the Feng family had done for you, yet you still colluded with outsiders to destroy them, then shamelessly used their wealth to pave your own future.
People like you deserve to descend to the eighteenth level of hell and suffer endless torment.
The hatred burned through Feng Yinyin’s body, making her voice tremble uncontrollably: “It’s good that Brother Su remembers all this. But we haven’t seen each other for over a year. I’m not sure whether what you’re saying now is true or just lies to deceive me.”
Su Yang immediately pressed, “What would make you believe me?”
“Didn’t you once tattoo my courtesy name on your chest? If it’s still there, I’ll believe you.”
“Of course it’s still there,” Su Yang replied without hesitation, cursing her inwardly for being troublesome. “But this is the General’s residence. Someone could come at any time. It’s not convenient for me to undress and show you.”
The moment the Feng family had fallen, he had removed the tattoo. How could he possibly still have it now?
Feng Yinyin, of course, wasn’t fooled. She reached out to grab his collar.
“No one will come right now. I’ll just take a quick look.”
Su Yang instinctively dodged, but Feng Yinyin scratched his face fiercely.
Pain shot across his face, and his temper flared. He pushed her away: “That’s enough! I already said now isn’t the time. Stop making trouble. Whose household are you serving in now? I’ll prepare money to redeem you later. We can talk about everything else afterward.”
With his face scratched and entangled with Feng Yinyin, Su Yang no longer dared to wander toward the women’s quarters. He turned to leave quickly—only to find Chun Xi approaching with Princess Hengyang, Xiao Qinghe, and several noble ladies.
Su Yang’s eyelids twitched wildly, panic surging in his chest.
As he scrambled to think of an excuse, Feng Yinyin rushed forward and knelt with a thud before Princess Hengyang: “Your Highness! Jinshi Su Yang deceived my family out of our wealth, colluded with criminals to murder my grandfather and father and brother. My mother also died during forced labor. I beg Your Highness to seek justice for me!”
Su Yang had thought Feng Yinyin was already appeased—he never expected her to suddenly accuse him.
His expression changed, and he immediately denied it: “Your Highness, please see clearly! This woman is shameless and has been pestering me. When I rejected her, she became enraged and slandered me. I have never committed such heinous acts!”
Before he finished, one of Princess Hengyang’s guards stepped forward and kicked the back of his knees.
“How dare you stand before Her Highness without kneeling!”
Chun Xi stood beside Princess Hengyang. As Su Yang dropped to his knees, he felt as though he was kneeling to Chun Xi as well, and resentment surged in his heart. He tried to argue: “Your Highness, I am a jinshi. According to the law—”
A chair was brought over, and Princess Hengyang sat down, speaking leisurely: “Not long ago, His Majesty conferred upon me the title of Grand Princess Yu’an. Officials below the fifth rank must bow and greet me. You’re merely a jinshi—what gives you the audacity to challenge me?”
Su Yang’s expression froze.
Though he had built connections over the past year, he knew little about the inner circles of power. From earlier conversations, he had only learned that Princess Hengyang liked handsome men and behaved unconventionally—not that she held such a high status.
Feeling the pressure of imperial authority, he quickly admitted fault: “I was unaware of this and have offended Your Highness. Please forgive me.”
Since he was already kneeling, Princess Hengyang didn’t dwell on it. She glanced at Feng Yinyin and asked: “This young lady accuses you of murdering her family and seizing their property. Do you admit your guilt?”
“I—”
Su Yang was about to deny it when Princess Hengyang cut him off: “I have a bad temper and don’t tolerate lies. Think carefully before you answer. Just now, all of us heard how deeply affectionate you claimed to be toward this young lady.”
Su Yang suddenly looked up at Chun Xi.
Feng Yinyin shouldn’t have been able to come to the capital, and Princess Hengyang and these noble ladies shouldn’t have appeared here unnoticed.
It was a trap—set by Chun Xi and Feng Yinyin together!
Realizing his situation, Su Yang knew he couldn’t deny everything. Anger toward Chun Xi surged—if he couldn’t have it easy, then no one would!
A vicious glint flashed in his eyes as he shouted: “Your Highness! Cao Chun Xi and I were betrothed since childhood. She broke the engagement and married another. Now she’s colluding with others to frame me and drive me to death. I beg Your Highness to uphold justice for me!”
With that, he slammed his head against the ground.
The surrounding crowd was stunned—none had expected such a connection between them. Even Princess Hengyang looked at Chun Xi in surprise.
Chun Xi didn’t deny it. Calmly, she said: “Your Highness, it is true that my father once arranged a childhood betrothal for me. However, after his sudden death, my mother, unable to bear the blow, had already annulled the engagement.”
“You’re lying! I have evidence!”
Su Yang took out the jade pendant.
“This is the token our families exchanged back then. There’s even a ‘Cao’ character engraved on it.”
To make it more convincing, he had deliberately instructed the craftsman to engrave the character large.
With the token in hand, his words gained some credibility.
But Chun Xi remained completely composed.
“What a coincidence,” she said lightly. “I also have a witness who can prove that this jade pendant was purchased by Young Master Su not long ago—and even the engraving was done only recently.”
Before she could summon the witness, Feng Yinyin could no longer hold back. She lunged at Su Yang, clawing and biting him: “You beast! Scoundrel! You knew you were already betrothed, yet you deliberately approached me and deceived me. I’ll kill you!”
