Zhuang Hao waved his magic staff, and the five elemental powers—metal, wood, water, fire, and earth—were evenly infused into the centers of the five formation patterns. With a crisp bang, the magical formation on the dome vanished instantly.
Xuan Liang looked at Zhuang Hao in astonishment. The flawless balance in his elemental magic just now was something even Saint-level mages would struggle to achieve.
“Lord Castellan, is it done now?” Zhuang Hao asked Xuan Liang.
Xuan Liang froze for a moment, then nodded. “Yes, yes, it’s done. Young Master Zhuang, your control over magic is truly formidable. I must admit defeat.”
Zhuang Hao smiled modestly. “You flatter me, Lord Castellan. How could I possibly compare with you?”
Qi Shaorong gave a dry laugh. “So, what do we do now? Fly across?” Even with the formation gone, the poisonous pool below still looked terrifying.
“Thanks for clearing the way,” came a sinister voice.
A skeletal white dragon carrying a necromancer swooped past.
“Shi Zhan!” Xuan Liang roared in fury.
Shi Zhan’s figure streaked across the toxic pool like a shooting star and disappeared into the corridor.
Watching Shi Zhan vanish, Qi Shaorong said irritably, “That bastard just swooped in and snatched the reward!”
“Lord Castellan, we must hurry, or that damned lich will take everything!” a ninth-level mage said indignantly.
“You’re right. Let’s go!” Xuan Liang said through gritted teeth.
Zhuang Hao conjured a gust of wind magic and carried Qi Shaorong over the blood-red pool.
The others used their own methods to cross one after another.
Not long after they entered the corridor, a loud rumble echoed through the passage.
Qi Shaorong glanced at Zhuang Hao with a headache. “What now?”
Zhuang Hao shook his head. “Not sure. But it’s probably that necromancer stirring up trouble.”
Qi Shaorong frowned, clearly annoyed. “What a pain…”
He and Zhuang Hao trailed at the back, following the group.
“The path is blocked! That bastard Shi Zhan sealed the way!” a ninth-level mage exclaimed in shock and anger.
“We have to catch up to him—he’s triggered too many traps. This could get dangerous,” Xuan Liang said grimly.
Qi Shaorong: “…”
Thanks to Shi Zhan triggering numerous mechanisms, the group had to face trap after trap, making their journey perilous and exhausting.
A strange screeching sound reached Qi Shaorong’s ears.
“What’s that sound?” he muttered.
“Sounds like bats,” Zhuang Hao replied.
“Bats? In a place like this?” Qi Shaorong tilted his head in disbelief.
A nearby ninth-level mage frowned. “It’s possible. The Flame Demon King once had a contract beast—a Saint-level fire bat.”
“You mean there might be a Saint-level fire bat in this tomb?” Qi Shaorong asked.
“Probably not. That bat supposedly died shortly after the Flame Demon King did. But it’s possible that its offspring are still here.”
Qi Shaorong nodded. “I see.” If they were descendants of a Saint-level beast, they were probably no pushovers either.
“I think I just heard someone screaming. Did I imagine that?” Qi Shaorong asked, tilting his head.
Zhuang Hao nodded. “No, you didn’t imagine it. I heard it too. Probably that necromancer who rushed in ahead of us.”
Qi Shaorong: “…”
That brutal necromancer was screaming like that? Even if his morals were questionable, he was still a Saint-level mage—his strength should be unquestionable.
“What could’ve happened to him?” Qi Shaorong muttered.
Zhuang Hao shook his head. “No idea.”
Qi Shaorong hesitated. “If he’s screaming that badly… maybe we shouldn’t go in just yet?”
Zhuang Hao frowned deeply. “Something’s coming.”
A swarm of red bats burst out toward them.
Qi Shaorong frowned. “That’s a lot of bats! Is this even a tomb? More like a bat nest!”
Damn it, what are these things feeding on? They’re huge!
The mass of bats charged at Qi Shaorong and Zhuang Hao.
Qi Shaorong brandished his magic staff, casting spells to defend against the fire bats’ assault.
One of the bats sank its fangs into the neck of a nearby ninth-level mage, draining him into a mummified corpse in moments.
Qi Shaorong’s heart pounded wildly. One of the fire bats broke through his magic shield and lunged straight at him.
His heart instantly clenched in fear.
Zhuang Hao let out a long howl and struck with a fist — the fire bat was sent flying and smashed into a puddle of flesh.
With his long hair billowing, Zhuang Hao’s entire body radiated boiling magical energy. A rainbow-colored light burst from him, forming a massive sphere of seven-colored magic that created a vacuum of magic around him, repelling anything that approached.
“Seven-element magic domain…” Xuan Liang’s eyes widened in astonishment.
One of the hallmarks of a saint-level mage was the manifestation of a domain. The fact that Zhuang Hao had created one meant he had stepped into the saint level.
Saint level before twenty… Xuan Liang’s heart skipped a beat.
Zhuang Hao waved his hand, and seven types of magic transformed into seven flying dragons. The fire bats that rushed toward them were all instantly killed.
“City Lord, should we go in?” Zhuang Hao asked.
Xuan Liang thought for a moment and replied, “Let’s go.”
After crossing the long corridor, Qi Shaorong was met with a breathtaking sight — a small mountain made entirely of priceless Fire Source Crystals, which were covered with fire bat nests. Qi Shaorong finally understood why the fire bats were so abnormally strong — they were feeding on these crystals.
Using something so valuable as food, it would’ve been a shame if they didn’t grow strong!
Several fire bats were surrounding Shi Zhan, breathing fire at him.
The bone dragon Shi Zhan had brought was being swarmed by bats and had nearly melted away completely.
When the bats noticed Xuan Liang and the others, they diverted their attacks, giving Shi Zhan a moment of relief.
Faced with the overwhelming swarm of fire bats, Qi Shaorong was clearly flustered.
Zhuang Hao pulled him close and enveloped both of them in a sphere of rainbow light. Any bat that struck the barrier instantly perished.
“Shi Zhan, you finally got what you deserved!” Xuan Liang shouted with excitement.
Shi Zhan, worn down by the fire bats and having lost his bone dragon, was at a disadvantage. Xuan Liang seized the opportunity and engaged him in a fierce battle.
The clash between two saint-level powerhouses unleashed powerful shockwaves that were not to be underestimated.
Qi Shaorong frowned and thought: Shouldn’t they be dealing with the bats first instead?
Despite being injured and drained, Shi Zhan was still a saint-level mage. Xuan Liang couldn’t take him down quickly.
While they fought, the rest of the ninth-level mages were busy battling the remaining fire bats.
Qi Shaorong and Zhuang Hao exchanged a glance and quietly slipped to the side, secretly gathering Fire Source Crystals.
One fist-sized Fire Source Crystal could be sold for tens of thousands of gold coins. This small mountain of crystals could be worth billions.
Eventually, Shi Zhan was seriously wounded — his chest pierced by Xuan Liang. He clutched his wound and fled in defeat.
…
There were many fire bats in the cave, but after heavy losses during the battle with Shi Zhan, the remaining ones were quickly wiped out by the group.
With the threat eliminated, the group began dividing the Fire Source Crystals.
According to the prior agreement, Shi Zhan was to take six shares, Qi Shaorong and Zhuang Hao three shares, and the eight ninth-level mages one share each. But two of them had died in battle, so the distribution had to be adjusted.
Even though Qi Shaorong and Zhuang Hao had already secretly collected a good amount, they still took their official share during the division.
“Thank you, Young Master Zhuang,” said Ge Hong gratefully.
During the battle with the fire bats, Zhuang Hao had stepped in to help him narrowly escape death.
“No need to thank me,” Zhuang Hao replied calmly.
Ge Hong smiled, silently glad he had made friends with Zhuang Hao before entering the tomb. Otherwise, he might’ve ended up like the two ninth-level mages who perished.
Looking around the cave, Qi Shaorong said, “Up ahead should be the main burial chamber.”
Xuan Liang nodded. “Most likely.”
He took a deep breath, a sharp gleam flashing in his eyes. The most valuable treasures were usually stored in the main chamber.
“I wonder what’s inside,” Qi Shaorong murmured with anticipation.
“No matter what’s inside… it has nothing to do with you. You may leave now.” A cold, sinister voice suddenly echoed around them.
Qi Shaorong turned his head, heart tightening. “Him?”
Zhuang Hao glanced at him. “You know who he is?”
“He’s the weirdo from the top of the Light Magic Tower,” Qi Shaorong replied.
The black-robed man lifted his head and looked toward Qi Shaorong with a scorching gaze. Zhuang Hao frowned and stepped in front of Qi Shaorong protectively.
The man raised his hand, blasted the doors open, and a hall filled with Sacred Light Stones came into view, making Qi Shaorong’s eyes light up.
“Sacred Light Stones!” he exclaimed.
The black-robed man said coldly, “Why are you still here? Get lost.”
Qi Shaorong frowned. This guy is too arrogant — Xuan Liang’s still here, and he dares talk like that?
“This isn’t very appropriate of you, Master Mage,” Xuan Liang said unhappily.
The black-robed man raised his eyes, gave Xuan Liang a cold glance, and then threw a punch.
Xuan Liang was sent flying and coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Qi Shaorong stared in disbelief. “How is this possible?” Xuan Liang was a saint-level mage, yet he couldn’t even retaliate. Just who is this monster? Thankfully, he hadn’t offended him back at the Magic Tower.
Zhuang Hao, still wary, said, “We should back off for now.”
Qi Shaorong nodded. “Good idea.”
As tempting as those Sacred Light Stones were, it was clear they wouldn’t be getting any. Better to be smart and walk away — they’d already made a massive profit with all the Fire Source Crystals.
“Let’s go,” Zhuang Hao said, pulling Qi Shaorong away.
