“All right, stop crying.” Curling the corner of her lips, Ling Ruoxi smiled calmly. She reached out and pressed a hand against Xiao Lan’s head, speaking softly, “How about this—big brother will take you up there, okay?”
“Sure… but big brother,” Xiao Lan said as he wiped the tears from his eyes and looked at her, “from the way you look, you don’t seem to have any Dou Qi. How are you going to take me up?”
Placing her hand on Xiao Lan’s head, Ling Ruoxi only smiled faintly. “Just like you—disguise yourself as a human, then eat them…”
“You—!” Cold light flashed in his black eyes. He didn’t even know where he had exposed himself. His pale blue figure flickered and vanished from Ling Ruoxi’s arms, reappearing several steps away. Standing there icily, he stared at her with vigilance. “How did you know I’m not human?”
“So stupid.” Smiling indifferently, Ling Ruoxi lightly gripped her dagger. “First, a human’s body temperature—no magical beast can ever have it. Your temperature is only twenty degrees. A human at that temperature would already be dead. Second, no matter how well a magical beast disguises itself as a human, there’s always a beastly stench lingering in its body. Third, you said you came up the mountain with your parents and the others—then why do you have Dou Qi in your body? And how could you judge that I don’t have any?”
She had merely appeared at the right moment, arriving suddenly. As for him, he had been gnawing on a human body when he sensed someone approaching and hastily disguised himself as a child. Presumably, the group of people here had taken pity on him because he looked like a child, and that was why they met such a fate.
So that’s how it was.
A sharp glint flashed through his eyes. Leaning against a tree trunk, Xiao Lan lifted his chin and stared at Ling Ruoxi. “You figured it out. I’ve nothing to say. But woman, why did you disguise yourself like this and come here? You don’t have even a shred of Dou Qi—how did you get up Dongdu’s Sky Wolf Peak?”
“Dongdu Sky Wolf Peak?” Ling Ruoxi raised an eyebrow. “Interesting name. But why should I answer you?” With a slight curl of her lips, she looked at the little boy ahead of her, casually flexing her wrist. The hidden sleeve arrows strapped there were already fully loaded, ready for a sudden strike.
In the world of magical beasts, there was no such thing as mercy—there was no way they would let her go.
“Tch, who says that?” A certain someone in the beast space snorted smugly. “Just because you’re so full of yourself, you think magical beasts are heartless? In fact, the most heartless are you humans. You eat us—why can’t we eat you? Living on the same continent, unless we all become vegetarians, endless slaughter is inevitable.”
Ling Ruoxi’s mouth twitched. She even had the urge to summon the silver wolf Xiao Bai. She had no idea what had stimulated that guy—his very first appearance had been to scold her, saying she shouldn’t have driven Luo Mingyu away. After that, he kept talking to her so frequently that many people had begun looking at her as if she were crazy.
Sometimes mental transmission was fine, but she still preferred speaking out loud. That said, without her consent, the silver wolf in the beast space couldn’t come out—unless she encountered real danger.
“You…” Xiao Lan stared at Ling Ruoxi in shock. By normal standards, shouldn’t this woman be afraid of him? He had used the same method to deceive others—once he revealed his true form, men and women alike fled for their lives. None of them had ever looked at him the way this woman did.
No Dou Qi, yet able to see through his identity, speaking so calmly and seriously. This woman… seemed quite interesting.
“Where I’m going is none of your business. If you block my way, I’ll kill you!” Killing intent spilled from Ling Ruoxi’s eyes as she let out a cold laugh. The murderous aura in that laugh alone was enough to make one shudder.
Even Xiao Lan was stunned by the burst of pressure from her body. His big eyes stared at her as his brows arched upward. “You don’t have Dou Qi. You can’t kill me. As long as I don’t want to, you won’t even be able to touch me.”
“Heh…” A strange, bewitching aura rippled outward. Xiao Lan’s expression changed drastically as he stared ahead in shock—the person who had been standing there had vanished without his noticing.
At the same time, a chilling presence rose behind him, making his face pale. If not for the disturbance in the air behind him, he would never have noticed it.
He spun around violently, thrusting his merciless sword forward. The smile on Ling Ruoxi’s lips was eerie, like a blood-red rose, stabbing straight into his heart.
She had said it—if he blocked her path, she would kill him.
“I already told you—if I don’t want to, you won’t even be able to touch me.” Xiao Lan sounded only mildly surprised. His pale blue figure suddenly retreated backward, and the sword that had pierced into his body was as if it had struck smoke—it hadn’t hit him at all.
Ling Ruoxi’s smile froze. She stared at him and leapt backward at once. She had clearly stabbed straight through his heart—why…? Even a magical beast would die if its heart were pierced!
“Idiot. Who told you he’s a magical beast?” The onlooker sighed helplessly.
Ling Ruoxi nearly cursed aloud. She asked coldly, “Then what is he?”
“Humans have three souls and seven spirits, so after death they become a wisp of spiritual energy in heaven and earth. This kid is just a mass of that spiritual energy, pieced together, having absorbed a huge amount of your killing intent. His very existence is to keep killing—killing. He’s still young now, ignorant, so he only ambushes humans without Dou Qi. But once he grows up, even those with Dou Qi—he’ll eat them one by one.” The silver wolf smiled helplessly as he watched from the beast space.
No sooner had he finished speaking than the darkness in front vanished. He now appeared in white robes, head drooping, sprawled on the ground with his hands propping up his cheeks, staring blankly at the person ahead.
“Hey, hey, hey—Ruoxi, why did you let me out?” The silver wolf’s scalp tingled as he leapt up and rushed to Ling Ruoxi’s side. “This kid is formed from spiritual energy. Even Dou Qi warriors can’t hit it! Unless it materializes itself, me coming out is basically suicide!”
“Weren’t you speaking so convincingly just now? I let you come out to say it face to face—now you can’t?” Ling Ruoxi raised her brows and stared at him. Perhaps because of his fur, his long white hair made him look even more handsome.
“One-on-one? What one-on-one? Look—there are two of us here, and only one of him. No matter how you count it, that’s two-on-one. Haven’t you learned arithmetic?”
“…” Ling Ruoxi twitched. “You’re not human, he’s not human—only I’m human. Two freaks versus one human—how is that not one-on-one?”
“…”
Xiao Lan stared warily at the silver wolf. That unusual Dou Qi made his nerves tighten. He clenched his fists instinctively. A Dou Qi warrior? No— a magical beast! A magical beast capable of transforming into a human—its strength was absolutely beyond comparison!
He was still too young, completely unable to contend with someone who had Dou Qi. He had to leave immediately!
His feet slipped as if greased, and the blue figure was about to flee. But just as his footwork began to move, the white figure ahead spread his arms lightly. Purple Dou Qi surged forward, forming a massive net that enveloped the escaping figure.
“I may not be able to catch you or touch you, but I can trap you with my Dou Qi. Inside this barrier space, let’s see how you run!” The silver wolf glared fiercely at the little thing inside, raising his brows smugly.
Then he turned to Ling Ruoxi and said proudly, “We’re freaks, you’re human. If you’ve got the ability, you catch one yourself. If you can catch it, I’ll admit I’m a freak!”
“With the way you look now, everyone can already tell you’re a freak. What’s there to admit?” Ling Ruoxi snorted disdainfully and strode forward.
The enraged silver wolf was so furious that he ground his teeth, clenching his fists tightly and pointing at Ling Ruoxi for a long time, unable to say a single word.
“Hey! What are you two arguing about? Let me out! I’m not a freak!” Xiao Lan roared, slapping his small palm against the barrier. Thick smoke rose within the barrier, and his icy little hands sizzled as they touched the scorching energy wall.
The silver wolf scratched his ear and raised an eyebrow at Xiao Lan. “Little brat, stop struggling. If you were grown up, I definitely couldn’t beat you. But right now? I can虐 you anytime!”
Tapping the barrier, the silver wolf hurried after Ling Ruoxi, secretly clicking his tongue in amazement. She was moving far too fast—without any Dou Qi, she could still reach such speed. The sleeve arrows in her hand were connected by steel wires; as the wires swayed, her slender figure had already shot more than ten meters ahead.
Even with Dou Qi, the silver wolf could only get within half a foot of her, watching that stubborn figure press onward. Sigh… how could two people who were once so close break up just like that? One went to the distant Evil King Island, the other to the far eastern Dongdu Kingdom. Human emotions were truly complicated.
“Hey, hey, hey—let me out…” Trapped inside the barrier, the small figure frowned at the people ahead, unable to do anything.
A city wall standing amid the mountains separated the forest from the town. On a stone stele nearby were engraved the two large characters: Dongdu. On the city wall itself were written several bold words: The King of Dongdu Personally Present.
“Holy crap!” Ling Ruoxi finally couldn’t hold it in and cursed aloud.
For other nations, even the border would have a town, and that town’s name would be displayed on a plaque. But this Dongdu Kingdom? Just a stone stele stuck there with “Dongdu Kingdom” written on it. Even the border city’s name was simply “The King of Dongdu Personally Present.”
What’s more, which emperor would set a boundary stone fifty meters outside his own country? Wasn’t that blatantly inviting other nations to attack? There wasn’t even a proper battlefield. Enemy armies could camp freely within those fifty meters—after all, they wouldn’t have crossed into his border, so it wouldn’t even count as an invasion.
