In the end, he realized that this wasn’t really his brother. It wasn’t until she was sixteen, when they watched the sunrise and sunset together in the mountains, and she said, “Never be apart,” that he understood—ten years ago, he had already been enchanted by her.
Like a film playing out in his mind, countless scenes unfolded until that merciless arrow pierced her heart. In that moment, his world turned blood-red. She still smiled, still the most beautiful bride he had ever known—but why did she speak such cruel words? Forget me…
You knew perfectly well that I could never forget you. Impossible!
A faint smile crossed his face as he stood in the street, taking a deep breath and clenching his fists tightly. In this life, he wanted only Qingqing. Every other woman? Not her. None of them.
“Let’s go. We’ll set off today.” Qingyi packed his things simply. Looking at the two still bickering in the room, he only smiled faintly.
By chance, Nan Gongmo and Ye Ningfeng had returned—the banquet had ended. Their status allowed them to come and go freely in this town.
“That soon? Well, okay… what about that girl from today? Aren’t you taking her with you?” Ling Ruoxi blinked in surprise. Especially after hearing Qingyi’s story, she didn’t know what to say to comfort him. If such a thing had happened to her, she wouldn’t have been able to accept it either.
Qingyi shook his head. “It was merely my duty as a medicinal doctor, saving her brother. Besides, we’re fleeing—how could we bring along a woman we don’t even know? Your Highness, shall we depart? Your grandfather must be growing impatient.”
“Mm… but it’s late now. We’ll leave tomorrow.” Nan Gongmo didn’t know what had happened, but seeing the expressions on Ling Ruoxi and Qingyi’s faces, he decided to wait and observe.
Qingyi simply nodded and returned to the room.
“What’s wrong with him?” Nan Gongmo frowned, puzzled, watching Qingyi. He remembered the young man always wore a faint smile, likely the same playful disposition as with Luo Mingyu. But after barely two days, his mood had already dropped so low?
Ling Ruoxi shook her head helplessly. “Let him be alone for a while. Don’t stare—it’s nothing. He just saw a girl who looked very much like his wife. That’s all.”
“Really? How old is he… and he’s already married?” Nan Gongmo raised an eyebrow. Qingyi’s carefree smile, combined with his skills as a medicinal doctor and flawless maintenance, made him look less than twenty—but in truth, he had lived for centuries.
Centuries… Ling Ruoxi’s mouth twitched violently. She turned sharply to glare at Luo Mingyu behind her, fire practically shooting from her eyes.
“Wh-what’s wrong?” Luo Mingyu’s body bristled with goosebumps. He stepped back nervously, staring at the woman before him.
“Luo Mingyu, back to my room!”
“Ah, so proactive… at least let me take a shower first…”
“….”
“Tell me, how old are you?” Ling Ruoxi’s gaze pierced him like an X-ray, as if she could see through to his very bones.
Luo Mingyu let out a relieved laugh, patting his shoulder. “I thought you were going to ask something else… this question? Is it really that important?”
Ling Ruoxi gave a heavy nod, raising an eyebrow.
The man scratched his head sheepishly. “Well… this year is a round number. Just turned a thousand. Nothing special…”
“…!” A thousand years old and he says it’s nothing! Ling Ruoxi’s mouth twitched furiously. She was dating a thousand-year-old immortal—and she was barely in her twenties!
She glared, grabbing Luo Mingyu’s collar. “No wonder you know so much! A thousand years old… Qingyi has a wife, what about you? Secret mistresses? Tell me—over this thousand years, how many women have you messed with?”
“….” Luo Mingyu wanted to curse, staring at her. “Ah, Ruoxi, listen. Men aren’t the same as women. We have… certain needs. I waited a thousand years for you without marrying anyone. Only… a few dozen women, that’s all…”
“I’ll cut you!” She grabbed the teacup on the table. Furious, she couldn’t believe he admitted to being with dozens of women. What a stallion!
Dodging the cup, Luo Mingyu raised his hands. “Ruoxi, let me explain! It’s not what you think! Those women, they—”
“Shut up! I don’t believe you! Get lost!” She grabbed the teapot, throwing it. By the end, even the vases in the room were flying.
The poor man jumped around, finally stepping on broken glass and falling hard.
Covering his sore behind, Luo Mingyu’s hair stood on end. He gulped instinctively, seeing her approach with scissors. “Ah… Ruoxi… you said not to act impulsively, for the child’s sake, for the sake of your happiness…”
“Shut up! I say jump, you jump! Now I’ll cut you!”
“Ahhh! Help!” He scrambled to open the door, running outside as someone chased after him with scissors.
Luckily—Nan Gongmo shivered, sitting cross-legged and exhaling in relief.
The room went silent. Qingyi stood by the window, leaning lightly against the frame, watching the nearly empty street. The bloody scene remained in his mind, unable to fade.
He had been wrong.
From the start, he shouldn’t have provoked her—or played tricks on her. Now… he couldn’t sleep. He knew she wasn’t Qingqing, but he still remembered her tear-streaked face, her reddened eyes.
“Hey! I can see you! Can you come down?” A hoarse voice echoed. Two people below waved their hands, staring up.
Qingyi stiffened, seeing familiar faces. How had they gotten here? He wanted to refuse, but then his gaze fell on He Yunxu’s scarred little hands. Finally, he closed the window.
“Sis, he’s the one who saved me? But… he looks like one of those wealthy young masters?” Wuyun frowned. His first impression immediately dismissed Qingyi. A pale, delicate man—he had no idea about life in a poor household. Still, this handsome face was exactly the kind of target for a teenage girl like his sister.
“I don’t know… I’ve only seen him… three times.” First, when he stole his money bag; second, at Yixiantian, again with the money; and third, when Wuyun was in danger.
This time, they had only met four times. And yet, he helped her—impossible to believe. She clearly remembered he called her Qingqing. Was it because she looked like someone he knew?
“Come in.” Qingyi opened the door, seeing the two outside. If they had left, they wouldn’t have arrived.
He Yunxu pulled Wuyun inside. Perhaps due to the cold outside, the warmth of the inn enveloped them, soothing their chilled bodies—though the scissor-wielder upstairs continued making noise.
“Hey, what’s your name?” Only after the hot tea was set in front of her did He Yunxu look at Qingyi.
He placed pastries on the table. “It’s late. Eat quickly, then leave.”
“Hey, at least answer my sister’s question! You saved me, but…”
“No buts. It was nothing.” Qingyi turned away calmly, walking upstairs.
Ling Ruoxi, however, blocked him. Raising an eyebrow, she smiled. “What, weren’t you thinking about this girl? Now that she’s here, talk to her. We leave tomorrow; we won’t meet again.”
“Nothing to talk about.” Qingyi pushed her aside and slammed the door.
“Sis, is that it? Just like that? Treat us like beggars?” Wuyun sat on the stool, glaring upward.
Opening his money bag, He Yunxu said nothing, setting it down and holding Wuyun’s wrist. “Let’s go. I’ve let go of the money he owes, whether he takes it or not. We’ll leave too. We won’t see him again.”
Indeed, they would never meet again. Leaning on the door, Qingyi inhaled deeply. True—after this, they would never meet.
If fate toys with people, now it was humans toying with humans.
When Qingyi mounted his horse, the two figures on the street followed openly, tailing them.
Damn it—they wouldn’t meet again!
“Let’s take a magical beast,” Qingyi groaned, already trying to suppress the thoughts in his heart. Who knew these two would follow them?
Luo Mingyu, however, raised his eyebrows. “Why? After enjoying the scenery, taking a magical beast is low-level? Or are you trying to leave quickly, not wanting to see them?”
Pointing at the two behind, Luo Mingyu smiled.
Qingyi’s face turned green. Still, the two continued following with no hint of discomfort.
“….” Qingyi wanted to strangle Luo Mingyu, tugging at his hair. “We don’t have much time. Taking a magical beast now will get us to the capital sooner.”
