Gu Jingxi saw the look of shock and disbelief on her face and couldn’t help but smile helplessly. “Madam, don’t look at me like that. It’s just an engagement, not the wedding itself. You’ve been engaged before, haven’t you? Yet you didn’t spend private time together then either.”
Meng Jinyao was momentarily stunned, then nodded. “That’s true… I just didn’t expect my husband to be clueless about interacting with a young lady.”
Gu Jingxi shook his head, smiling. “Your husband isn’t a god; he can’t know everything.”
Meng Jinyao hesitated. “I thought you were good at it.”
But really, ask yourself—if a man buys you jewelry, cosmetics, custom dresses, and occasionally treats you to tasty food, can you still believe he doesn’t know how to get along with a young lady?
In such situations, there are usually two possibilities: either he’s practiced with other women before, or he understands the lady’s preferences and deliberately caters to them.
Now this man suddenly tells her he doesn’t know how to interact with women and needs time to figure it out… then what was all that before?
Could it be that there’s a hidden advisor guiding him?
What kind of strategist could be so clever as to teach him to appear omniscient, without revealing a single flaw?
Seeing her dazed stare, Gu Jingxi chuckled. “There are plenty of things your husband can’t do. You’ll discover them gradually, Madam.”
Meng Jinyao blinked but said nothing.
The rest of the journey passed quietly.
Gu Jingxi still held the little lady’s hand. Her hand was small, and his palm could wrap around it completely. It was soft, pliable, almost boneless. He didn’t dare apply force, afraid he might crush it.
Suddenly, his shoulder sank slightly. When he turned his head, he saw the little lady leaning on his shoulder, eyes closed, fast asleep.
Seeing this, he released her hand and pulled her closer into his arms, letting her sleep more comfortably.
When she slept, she looked particularly gentle and innocent—her eyes half-closed, long thick lashes drooping, lips slightly upturned, serene and endearing.
Once in his embrace, her brows furrowed, but she didn’t open her eyes. Still deep in sleep, she unconsciously sniffed the familiar scent, relaxed her brows, and nuzzled closer, adjusting herself into a comfortable position.
Gu Jingxi looked at the delicate girl in his arms and felt his heart melt entirely.
Previously, he had scoffed at his friend’s saying that “cradling soft jade and warm fragrance is the ultimate pleasure in the world,” but now he felt utterly proven wrong. Having this soft, delicate girl snuggle in his arms was a sensation of unparalleled delight—he almost didn’t want to let go.
Before he realized it, the carriage had stopped; they had arrived at their home.
Looking at the little lady sleeping soundly in his arms, he whispered softly, “Madam, we’re home.”
Meng Jinyao seemed to hear his voice, murmured a sleepy “Mmm~,” and burrowed further into his chest, even tucking her ears in as if to block out disturbances.
Seeing her endearing behavior, Gu Jingxi’s gaze softened. Not wanting to disturb her sleep, he carried her out of the carriage and into the mansion, heading straight to Weirui Pavilion.
Weirui Pavilion
The masters hadn’t returned yet, and the maids hadn’t dared rest, so the courtyard was still brightly lit. Four senior maids were outside, admiring the moon while waiting for the masters’ return.
Suddenly, Chunliu noticed the young lady in the Marquis’s arms and immediately guessed it was Madam. She sprang up, hurried forward, bowed, and asked with concern, “Marquis, what happened to Madam?”
The other three maids also stood, saluted, and watched nervously.
Gu Jingxi replied, “Madam is fine, she just fell asleep.”
With that, he carried her inside. As he reached the bed and was about to lay her down, the slight noise seemed to stir her. Her eyes slowly fluttered open, drowsy, looking at him and asking, “Husband… we’re not home yet?”
“We are home,” he replied.
Meng Jinyao blinked, rubbed her eyes, and looked around. She realized she had been carried back to the room by Gu Jingxi, with the four senior maids following, all smiling and teasing her.
She instantly became fully awake, blushing. “Husband, put me down first.”
Gu Jingxi gently set her down. Once she was steady on her feet, he reached up, tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, and softly asked, “Still sleepy? Want to continue sleeping?”
Meng Jinyao shook her head immediately. “No, I’m not.”
The four maids exchanged glances. Clearly, this outing had strengthened the couple’s bond. The Marquis’s every movement toward Madam seemed infused with more affection.
Chunliu then asked, “Madam, would you like a bath?”
Meng Jinyao nodded and dismissed the maids to prepare the bath. Once they left, she asked Gu Jingxi, “Husband, why didn’t you wake me?”
He smiled, lips pressed. “I did try, but someone was sleeping like a little piglet and wouldn’t wake up. I couldn’t sit in the carriage all night, so I had no choice but to carry you back.”
Listening to his gentle, teasing tone, her ears tingled. But taking in his words carefully, she immediately raised her eyes, glaring at him angrily. “You’re the little piglet!”
Pouting slightly, her almond-shaped eyes wide, bright yet tinged with playful annoyance, she looked both coquettish and endearing.
Gu Jingxi’s heart stirred mischievously. Wanting to tease her, he smiled, “Hmm… if the little piglet has a husband, then the husband must also be a pig.”
Meng Jinyao was rendered speechless.
After a moment, she retorted stubbornly, “You’re the pig! It’s said that ‘cabbage gets pushed by the pig,’ and I’m that good cabbage!”
Gu Jingxi paused, then couldn’t help laughing, teasing her: “I didn’t know before, Madam, that you had a talent for harming a thousand enemies at the cost of eight hundred yourself.”
Meng Jinyao blinked, utterly confused. What did he mean, “harming a thousand enemies at the cost of eight hundred”?
Gu Jingxi patiently explained: “Wasn’t the pig your choice, Madam? Given the options, you still chose a pig. It proves your taste isn’t exactly perfect.”
He smiled gently, showing no displeasure. Looking at the dazed, slightly silly little lady, he couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch her cheek softly. Then he added, “But now that you’ve made your choice, there’s no turning back. You’ll just have to endure a lifetime with a pig.”
Hearing this, her face instantly warmed, cheeks flushing slightly. She gave him a playful glare and murmured in a tiny voice, “I don’t feel wronged at all.”
Gu Jingxi’s smile deepened as he heard her.
