“Yes, yes.”
Liang Chen quickly got to his feet and pulled a feng shui compass from his robes. He then began wandering around the construction site, putting on the appearance of a serious inspection.
Holding the compass, he looked here and there, his brows knitted tightly together.
Inside, however, he was miserable.
The feng shui of this place was simply too good.
With mountains at its back and water before it, sheltered from harsh winds while gathering spiritual energy, it was practically the perfect location for building a temple.
He walked around again and again, inspecting every corner of the site.
Yet despite searching the entire area, he couldn’t find a single flaw he could use as an excuse to criticize the project.
After nearly four hours of fruitless effort, with the sun already approaching the horizon, Liang Chen finally gave up.
Putting away his compass, he walked over to Princess Ningyu and forced a smile onto his face.
“Reporting to Your Highness, I have completed my inspection.
The site Your Highness selected is indeed blessed with exceptional geography and excellent feng shui.
Construction of the Prayer Temple is proceeding smoothly, and the workmanship is of the highest quality.
All of this is due to Your Highness’s efforts.
After returning to the capital, I will truthfully report everything to His Majesty and request that Your Highness be rewarded for your achievements.”
“Then I shall trouble Lord Liang with that.”
Princess Ningyu smiled faintly, though there was not the slightest trace of gratitude in her tone.
“Oh, and one more thing.”
She paused before continuing.
“Please be careful on your journey back to the capital.
After all, your earlier disrespect toward the Mountain God.
If the Mountain God decides to punish you somewhere along the road, that will have nothing to do with me.”
Liang Chen froze.
The smile on his face stiffened as he cautiously asked,
“Your servant… when did I ever show disrespect toward the Mountain God?”
“Weren’t you just worried that a flood might destroy the Prayer Temple?”
Princess Ningyu raised an eyebrow as though the answer were obvious.
“Doesn’t that mean you doubted the Mountain God’s protection?
Naturally, that counts as disrespect.”
Liang Chen: “…”
By the time they returned from the Prayer Temple to the Princess Manor, night had already fallen.
Claiming exhaustion from the journey, Liang Chen politely declined the princess’s dinner invitation and hurried back to his quarters.
After shutting the door behind him, he collapsed into a chair.
His entire body felt drained.
Throughout the entire day, he had run into obstacle after obstacle.
His stomach was full of frustration and anger, yet he had nowhere to vent it.
What he didn’t know was that from the moment he stepped into the Princess Manor, five pairs of eyes had been watching his every move from the shadows.
Shen Yan, Hua Ying, Su Wangkui, Wei Zhuoshan, and Wei Zijun had already completed their disguises and were hidden throughout the manor.
Equipped with miniature walkie-talkies, they maintained constant communication while secretly gossiping about Liang Chen.
Wei Zhuoshan said,
“Old Su, that’s your son?”
Hua Ying’s voice carried obvious disdain.
“You can tell a person’s character from their face. He isn’t even as handsome as Su Qingyu.”
Wei Zijun added,
“The way he treated the servants earlier was terrible.”
Shen Yan spoke bluntly.
“He certainly doesn’t look like a good person.”
Su Wangkui let out a long sigh.
His voice was filled with helplessness and sorrow.
“Alas… what a disgrace to the family. What a disgrace.
How did I ever raise such a son?
Abandoning his wife and children, betraying his clan, helping evildoers commit wrongdoing…
He’s completely disgraced the Su family.
By the way, have you observed the people from the Hanyue Sword Sect?”
Wei Zijun replied,
“Only the vice sect leader came. The sect leader didn’t.”
Shen Yan added,
“In terms of strength, there’s only one person worth paying attention to.
He’s the only one capable of giving us a proper fight.
I believe he’s the black-clothed swordsman who injured Lin Zhao before.”
Su Wangkui looked surprised.
“Is that sect really this weak?
Or did they simply choose not to send their true experts?”
As a former official of the capital, Old Master Su had seen his fair share of the world.
In his experience, even an average martial arts sect should have at least three to five experts worth mentioning.
Wei Zhuoshan let out a cold laugh.
“If this trash sect truly possessed any supreme sword arts, they wouldn’t be so obsessed with magical weapons and legendary blades.”
Back then…
If they had possessed genuine skill, they wouldn’t have driven his entire family to their deaths in an attempt to force him to forge a peerless weapon.
Su Wangkui nodded.
“This is what our Cult Leader often calls ‘bad students relying on expensive stationery.’
A real expert—like our Left Protector, for example—could beat people with nothing more than a tree branch.”
Hua Ying, as always, preferred simple and direct solutions.
“When do we strike?”
Shen Yan calmly replied,
“We wait tonight.
If anything happens to him inside the Princess Manor, it could bring trouble upon the princess.”
Coincidentally, the people on the other side were thinking exactly the same thing.
Inside the guest quarters assigned to the guards, the one-eyed vice sect leader of the Hanyue Sword Sect spoke in a low voice.
“Don’t make a move against the princess tonight.
It would only bring trouble upon us.
Tomorrow, after we’ve departed, you can return and carry out the assassination.”
The Nameless Swordsman glanced sideways.
Through the narrow gap of a not-quite-closed window, he looked toward a certain shadowed corner of the wall.
Then he silently withdrew his gaze and said flatly,
“Oh.”
The night passed peacefully.
Early the next morning, the imperial envoy’s party set out on their return journey.
After traveling for roughly two hours, the one-eyed vice sect leader finally lost his patience.
The mountain road twisted and turned through dense forests on both sides.
Towering trees blocked out most of the sunlight, allowing only scattered beams to filter through the leaves.
The surroundings were eerily quiet.
Only the rhythmic clop-clop of horses’ hooves on gravel and the rustling of wind through the leaves disturbed the silence.
The place felt desolate and remote.
Riding his horse, the vice sect leader carefully watched his surroundings, one hand gripping the hilt of his sword.
After traveling this long without incident, there probably wasn’t any danger.
Urging his horse forward, he quietly moved beside Wuming and lowered his voice so only the two of them could hear.
“Alright.
We’re far enough away from the Princess Manor now.
Even if something happens, no one will suspect us.
Go back immediately and kill Princess Ningyu.
Be quick about it.
We’ll wait for you at the fork in the road ahead.”
Wuming did not move.
He remained mounted, holding the reins loosely.
His calm gaze swept over the dark forest ahead, as though he could see through the countless layers of leaves and spot whatever was hidden within.
“No rush,” he said evenly.
“Let’s wait a little longer.”
“Wait for what?”
The vice sect leader frowned impatiently.
“The Eighth Prince is waiting for our report.
Stop wasting time and get moving.
Finish the job so we can return to the capital sooner.”
“Wait… for those experts who have been following us the whole time to show themselves.”
Wuming’s tone remained completely indifferent, as though discussing something trivial.
“What?!”
The vice sect leader’s expression changed drastically.
He instantly drew his sword and looked around warily.
Wuming said,
“Did you really not notice that several top-tier experts were already hiding within the Princess Manor last night?”
“You—!”
The vice sect leader’s face turned green with anger.
Pointing at Wuming, he shouted,
“You noticed them all along, and you didn’t tell me?!”
“What would be the point?”
Wuming replied calmly.
“You can’t beat them anyway.
Telling you would accomplish nothing except making you panic.”
Vice Sect Leader: “…”
Then he exploded.
“And you’re not panicking?!”
Wuming lifted his chin toward Liang Chen’s carriage farther up the road.
“What would I panic about?”
His expression remained as calm as ever.
“Those people are either here to kill you… or here to kill him.”
He paused.
“Either way, they’re not here for me.”
