Bai Qingling’s expression changed, and in her anxiety, blood surged even more violently from below.
Zhou Ruyuan, his face dark, stood up and pulled her aside, frowning as he explained to Liu Yanhui: “Lord Liu, this is a member of my household.”
Liu Yanhui chuckled, unceremoniously: “So she holds no official position in the army.”
“This is the military. Unauthorized persons may not enter, nor may they comment on military matters. Violators shall be treated as spies!”
Bai Qingling’s anger boiled in her chest, and her blood surged even more uncontrollably.
“How dare you! I am a strategist of the Northern Expedition Army! You speak to me with such disrespect, and I will deal with you according to military law!”
Zhou Ruyuan, already irritated over the supply issues, saw the two of them arguing endlessly. Veins bulging on his forehead, he could barely contain his anger.
“You two, stop arguing!”
“Qingling, return to the residence first!”
Zhou Ruyuan’s tone was impatient.
Bai Qingling stared in disbelief. The prince actually scolded her for someone so trivial.
Was it simply because this person was a subordinate of Shen Lanxi?
“Your Highness, these debts were deliberately left by Shen Lanxi to spite us. We absolutely cannot fall for her trap,” she thought. She would not let Shen Lanxi be pleased.
Zhou Ruyuan’s head ached even more.
“I’ll report to the Emperor myself. You go back and rest first.”
Bai Qingling wanted to argue, but then heard Zhou Ruyuan mutter softly:
“Qingling… why is so much blood flowing from you?”
Looking down, Bai Qingling saw a flood of blood, and her vision darkened in waves.
“Qingling… Qingling…”
…
Shen Lanxi’s massive blade stood upright, waiting. It was past noon before Abu Khan and his men finally arrived, leisurely and late.
“Old acquaintances, let’s start the negotiations!” Abu Khan, ignoring the grim faces of Sun Zhong and the others, walked into the camp as if it were his own.
The whistling sound of wind split by the blade echoed.
A chill ran down Abu Khan’s spine, and he instinctively turned toward the sound.
“What is that?”
Curious, he approached, only to see a massive blade standing upright on a large stone. Four guards flanked it, switching positions periodically.
“What a fine blade!” Abu Khan’s heart skipped a beat. A single good weapon could equal hundreds of beauties, thousands of cattle and sheep, tens of thousands of slaves!
“Excellent! Very good! Your Great Zhou is truly thoughtful to bring me a gift. I accept it!”
Sun Zhong and the others exchanged awkward glances.
“That blade is not for you!” Wei Dongzhu said.
Abu Khan found Wei Dongzhu vaguely familiar but couldn’t remember where he’d seen him. He just found him irritating and scowled.
“How dare you speak to me this way! I see the Great Zhou has no intention of negotiating!” Abu Khan glared at Wei Dongzhu, a cold menace in his eyes.
Wei Dongzhu replied calmly: “I think the one unwilling to negotiate is you. The agreement was for the morning; now it’s already afternoon. I see no need to negotiate. Let’s just go to war!”
Abu Khan’s triangular eyes scanned Wei Dongzhu. Seeing no fear in his gaze, he paused, thinking to himself: perhaps he hadn’t received news of the Great Zhou army?
Was the news false, or was this man bluffing?
“I am tied up with important matters, not lounging around like you!” Abu Khan’s eyes flashed with dark intent.
Sun Zhong and the others could not allow the negotiation to collapse, so they quickly offered him a way to save face.
“General, let’s enter the main tent to negotiate.”
“We’ve prepared hot tea inside. The wind outside is too harsh; let’s speak in the tent.”
Abu Khan glanced at the blade again. Rarely had he seen a weapon he liked. Now that he had seen it, he did not want to let it go.
“Bring this blade to my carriage!”
Abu Khan’s men stepped forward—but Wei Dongzhu and the others blocked them.
“This is our general’s weapon. Anyone else touches it, die!”
Abu Khan was startled by the killing intent radiating from Wei Dongzhu, his eyelids twitching.
“Who is your general? Bring him to me!”
“Our general will not only keep his weapon from you, but also cut you down if you dare touch it!”
Abu Khan’s murderous intent flared.
Wei Dongzhu said coldly: “Our general is an envoy for the marriage alliance and the commander defending the Northwest. He is not someone you can meet at will.”
Abu Khan had negotiated many times before, but never encountered anyone daring to defy him.
He was furious.
“I see the Great Zhou has no sincerity for negotiation at all. Prepare for our troops!” He turned and left.
Sun Zhong and the others tried to stop him but were silenced by Wei Dongzhu’s piercing gaze.
How could they allow foreigners to swagger on Great Zhou’s territory?
For a moment, they couldn’t meet Wei Dongzhu’s eyes.
Abu Khan left the main tent. Seeing that no one tried to restrain him, he was furious beyond measure.
If they didn’t stop him, he would go hunting immediately.
This anger could only be appeased by slaughtering three Great Zhou villages!
“General, we can’t leave! Have you forgotten why we came?” one of Abu Khan’s subordinates whispered.
The cold wind sobered Abu Khan somewhat.
The harshest part of winter on the steppe was approaching. The Turkic tribes were poor at farming; many slaves and livestock died each year in winter.
Every winter, they hunted across other tribes’ lands to seize enough provisions to survive.
This year, a wildfire ravaged the Wala tribe, killing cattle and sheep, destroying half the pasture, and many nearby villages had relocated. There was barely enough to survive the winter.
After hesitating repeatedly, Abu Khan returned to the main tent, scowling.
Hmph. The Great Zhou has embarrassed me. Come spring, Huangtu City will run red with blood!
“I’ve finally arrived here. Since I’m here, I will push for negotiations!”
“You previously agreed to marry a princess to our three tribes. Where is the princess? Bring her out!”
Wei Dongzhu said: “The princess is not here, and our general is also absent. If you truly want negotiations, wait until we report to our general. He will decide whether to meet you.”
Abu Khan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Wait… what did he say?
He’s supposed to wait?
He, Abu Khan, could not endure such humiliation!
“You Great Zhou people are truly deceitful! You claimed I arrived late—but where is your general? He isn’t even here!”
“You are mocking the three Turkic tribes! I will return and attack immediately!”
Wei Dongzhu showed no fear at all. He shouted: “Go ahead, fight! You will not return alive!”
Abu Khan’s belly heaved in anger, and he glared at Wei Dongzhu. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll send troops to massacre you all?”
Wei Dongzhu smiled provocatively: “Who massacres whom? That’s not certain yet.”
Abu Khan’s triangular eyes swept the area, finally resting darkly on Wei Dongzhu.
“What’s your name? What is your rank?” How dare he speak so recklessly in front of so many! Even the previous prince hadn’t dared. He must be a favored prince.
Wei Dongzhu sneered: “My surname is Wei—Wei of the Wei Family Army!”
