“You unfilial, rebellious thing! Come out here this instant!” Old Madam Shen bellowed. She hadn’t expected the guards at the door to dare block her.
Her anger only intensified.
So, after mingling with men for a few days, she really thought she had gained more courage than a woman?
No matter how skilled she was, she was still not a man!
No matter how formidable, in the end she would be driven out of the army in disgrace.
Ultimately, the ones she could rely on were still the men of the Shen family!
And now, she even refused to go pray for the male Shen family members—did she really still think she was the Great General of the Pacification Army?
Today, Old Madam Shen would make sure she knew her place. From start to finish, she was a joke!
Old grievances and new resentments simmered; today, Old Madam Shen would settle accounts with Shen Lanxi once and for all!
“Shen Lanxi! You rebellious, unfilial child! Come out here!” The louder she shouted, the more unrestrained her energy became.
Liu and the others stood behind Old Madam Shen, watching impassively. No one dared to speak a word in protest.
“General, Madam is shouting outside!” Chunxue reported, looking troubled.
Shen Lanxi heard.
She sneered and set down her brush.
“Let’s go see what all the fuss is about.”
Ban Sicao whispered to Cheng Zheng, “Are her family always this noisy?”
Cheng Zheng nodded.
“Should we give them some medicine to make sure they stay quiet in the future?”
Cheng Zheng gave Ban Sicao a blank look. How could someone so grown-up still talk and act so childish? Like an unripe youth, making such a fuss!
“Better yet, give them some ‘wealth and luxury’ powder, so they all end up like pampered rich folk—waited on hand and foot for everything!”
Cheng Zheng: “……”
Old Madam Shen saw Shen Lanxi step out and immediately barked at the guards to clear the way.
The guards stood firm, eyes straight ahead, acting as if they hadn’t seen her.
The moment she tried to push past, their weapons seemed to grow eyes, blocking her path.
Old Madam Shen’s face darkened further with anger.
“Shen Lanxi! I asked your Second Aunt to call you to the temple to pray for the Shen men. Why didn’t you go?” Her eyes glared sharply as she demanded an answer.
Shen Lanxi stepped forward, and the two guards automatically made way!
Her imposing aura pressed forward step by step, intimidating. Old Madam Shen instinctively flinched and took two steps back.
After retreating, she immediately felt frustrated.
What was there to fear? She was merely a tiger stripped of its teeth—intimidating in appearance only.
“Being a descendant of the Shen family, you refuse to obey your elders’ orders. Now, the front lines are in danger and battle could break out at any moment. All the young Shen men are on the battlefield, yet you selfishly refuse even to pray for their safety. How could the Shen family produce such an unfilial, cruel-hearted daughter like you!”
Old Madam Shen pointed at Shen Lanxi, her words dripping with hatred, as if she wanted to strip her flesh and crush her bones.
Shen Lanxi’s face remained cold: “If Grandmother knows battle is imminent, why still take the family to the temple? Aren’t you afraid the army might catch you and use it to threaten the Pacification Army?”
“If that happens, Grandmother will be the one who destroys the Shen family!” Shen Lanxi’s sharp gaze cut through her.
Old Madam Shen was momentarily stunned by the intensity of that gaze. She quickly regained her wits and spat curses.
“I’m praying to the Buddha for the protection of our Shen descendants, yet you curse the family! You’re unworthy of being a Shen descendant—there is no place for such unfilial and disrespectful nonsense in our family!”
Shen Lanxi replied coldly: “Didn’t I warn you before to stay inside the courtyard and not go out?”
Of course she had, but Old Madam Shen couldn’t admit it now.
“There are the Pacification Army troops in Yonglin Prefecture. How could rebels possibly get in?”
“If rebels do manage to get in, it’s because of your prior mismanagement.”
“There are plenty of merchants and civilians on the streets, yet you insist we stay inside. What is your real intention?”
Madam Tian added fuel to the fire: “What else could it be? She’s just scared no one listens to her, so she punishes her own family to show outsiders. If outsiders see her so cruel to her own, they’ll fear her!”
Madam Miao snorted: “Why should we be her pawns just to show power? We are Shen family, but we owe her nothing!”
Madam Liu said: “Lanxi, your grandmother only wants you to join and pray at the temple. So just soften up and go with us!”
Madam Miao scoffed, rolling her eyes: “Second Sister-in-law, now that you’re playing peacemaker, it’s meaningless. Didn’t you hear how she argued with Mother? Are you helping her or Mother? Which side are you on?”
Madam Liu glared: “I’m helping Mother, of course. You’re the one always stirring trouble—everyone in the family knows that!”
Old Madam Shen, seeing Shen Lanxi refuse to yield in front of so many outsiders, felt humiliated.
Shen Lanxi didn’t respect her grandmother at all. In the capital, she relied on the Empress Dowager and the Emperor; during exile, she relied on her authority as a commissioner. Step by step, she leveraged her position.
Now her son had been reinstated, and her grandchildren held key positions in the army. Without the Empress Dowager or the Emperor nearby, no one could support Old Madam Shen.
“Shen Lanxi! How dare you!” Old Madam Shen fumed. All the grievances she’d endured along the way needed to be repaid.
Her grandson would become the Great General of the Pacification Army, and even the Emperor would give him some leeway.
Shen Lanxi coldly watched her relatives, waved her hand, and immediately a group of soldiers rushed in!
Old Madam Shen’s expression changed. She shouted in anger: “How dare you! My son is the Minister of Revenue, my grandson the Great General of the Pacification Army—who dares touch me?”
Ban Sicao laughed, unable to hide his amusement.
“This old lady is really funny!”
Cheng Zheng and the others suppressed smiles. A bunch of confused fools, unaware of the situation—they were eager to see what would happen once the edict arrived.
It would be spectacular!
Shen Lanxi ordered: “Take them back to the courtyard. Until the war is over, no one is to leave the yard!”
The soldiers immediately obeyed and apprehended them.
Old Madam Shen was furious and humiliated, her face bright red.
“Shen Lanxi! I am your grandmother! Dare you let anyone lay a hand on me? Aren’t you afraid I’ll charge you with rebellion and unfilial conduct?”
Shen Lanxi remained unmoved. The soldiers were trained to ignore outside interference. Even if Old Madam Shen shouted she was Shen Lanxi’s ancestor, they couldn’t hear.
The soldiers only obeyed Shen Lanxi’s orders!
Once Old Madam Shen was restrained by the soldiers, she finally realized the reality: Shen Lanxi truly dared to take action against her.
“Shen Lanxi! You unfilial, rebellious child! How dare you touch your grandmother—may heaven strike you down, and may you die a terrible death…” Old Madam Shen’s shouts gradually diminished as the soldiers led her away.
Madam Liu, Madam Miao, and Madam Tian didn’t want to be taken along—they were embarrassed.
One by one, they followed behind, covering part of their faces in fear.
