After showering and putting on clean clothes, she sat at her desk, holding a mirror, carefully examining her reflection. She was almost thirty, yet still retained the appearance of a twenty-year-old.
Cheng Qiao felt a bit concerned. If ten years passed and she still looked like this, would people mistake her for Daji? What if they chased her around yelling about killing demons?
Never mind—it’ll work out eventually. Cheng Qiao left the space and returned to her room, covering herself with blankets to sleep. She had indeed been tired these past two days.
She didn’t know how long she slept, but vaguely heard Li Huan’s voice. Drowsily, she didn’t get up, just turned over and fell back asleep.
That night, she didn’t sleep well. She had a nightmare: Haidong Qing searching for its child, the Wolf King standing atop the mountain watching her, Little Red Head awakening and swallowing the little wolf pup in one bite.
“Ah…”
Cheng Qiao woke up in fright, sitting upright, hearing her own heart pounding. The dream had been too real. Ignoring the sweat on her body, she immediately slipped into the space.
Little Red Head had truly awakened. Its lower body coiled around the Qilin Rebirth Tree, while its upper body stood upright, eyes locked on the trembling little wolf pup and the three huddled, motionless eagle chicks.
The little wolf pup really was the Wolf King’s child. Though trembling all over, it still protected the three eagle chicks, baring its tiny fangs at Little Red Head.
“Little Red Head, you’re awake.”
At Cheng Qiao’s voice, the little wolf pup ran over at top speed and leapt, trying to jump into her arms. She quickly bent her legs to catch it.
Little Red Head also wanted to crawl over, but the wolf pup in her arms began to snarl at it. With its mother present, it wasn’t afraid of this not-yet-dragon snake.
“Little Red Head, meet Wang Zai, the Wolf King’s child. I’ve named it Wang Zai. From now on, it’s under your care. As its senior, you mustn’t bully it.”
Little Red Head nodded slightly. Indeed, it could sense the regal aura from the little wolf pup. It wondered how the owner had managed to obtain it—normally, the Wolf King wouldn’t give up its child.
“The old tree asked me to exchange Space Water for the wolf pup.”
The Qilin Rebirth Tree was munching happily, a bit embarrassed to have turned into a ‘melon.’ The eagle chicks were too weak, and it wanted a stronger little companion.
Little Red Head understood the tree’s intent, rubbing affectionately against its trunk. It was taking time to refine the cold poison.
“They are Haidong Qing’s children. When we return to Hexi, they will be given back, or I’ll spoil it while raising them.”
The cold eyes of Little Red Head scanned the three terrified eagle chicks. Puzzled, it thought Haidong Qing wasn’t that strong, so why were its children so useless?
“Hoo…”
Suddenly, Little Red Head lunged at the three eagle chicks, its long spine nearly touching them. The chicks panicked, flapping their wings and flying up.
The Qilin Rebirth Tree exhaled in relief. Finally, they could fly. An eagle that couldn’t fly was worse than a domestic hen—at least hens laid eggs.
The eagle chicks quickly improved their flying skills, mastering balance and altitude. Perhaps tasting the joy of flight, they chased each other until exhausted, then gradually landed.
“Well done. You deserve a reward.”
Cheng Qiao gave them Space Water to drink to their fill, and strips of raw pork. The eagle chicks tore into the meat, already showing fierce appetites.
Cheng Qiao dropped the remaining meat and looked at Little Red Head:
“Do you still need cold poison?”
Little Red Head’s eyes lit up. Cold poison—right, the male owner’s poison wasn’t fully cleared. It could absorb the rest.
“Li Huan’s cold poison is almost gone—not enough for you to drink a full pot. In a few days, there will be a corpse with even more poisonous properties. See if you like it.”
Cheng Qiao reached out to touch the small horns sprouting on Little Red Head’s head. Could this snake truly become a dragon? If so, she might not be able to keep it.
Little Red Head seemed to sense her thoughts, pressing its large head against her face. The icy touch made her shiver, and she quickly pushed its head away.
Little Red Head looked a bit aggrieved but thought, When I ascend as a dragon, you’ll gain great merit. That will be enough for your growth.
Cheng Qiao sensed Little Red Head’s thoughts, her eyes filled with anticipation. She wanted to see how far she could grow.
“I’m leaving now. Don’t fight.”
Cheng Qiao left the space and went straight to bed. This time, her sleep was deep. She woke up at nine in the morning.
“Good morning, honey. You woke up late today.”
“Why didn’t you call me? I still have to take the kids to school.”
“I saw you sleeping soundly and didn’t want to wake you. You can still go pick them up tonight. Anyway, it’s just one morning. Hurry, eat breakfast—I’ve reheated it twice already.”
October in the capital was already chilly. Cheng Qiao quickly put on a light jacket and noticed Hantong was still in his single-layer clothes, feeling worried.
“Where does your monthly salary go? Why not buy some proper clothes?”
Cheng Qiao suddenly realized Hantong, like Hu Lata, was extremely careless about clothing. A set of clothes could last him ages.
“My money goes to my daughter’s education.”
“Oh, the girl in the same class as Cheng Li? Why didn’t you bring her over? What about her father?”
“She doesn’t have a father. Her mother died, so I adopted her. There’s also another child currently without an adopter. Cheng Qiao, any thoughts?”
“Are they both orphans now?”
“Yes.”
“So, Hantong, are you married?”
“Didn’t I tell you? People with abilities generally don’t marry.”
“Why not?”
“On one hand, offspring are difficult. If both have abilities, even marriage may not result in children. Marrying an ordinary person would be harming them.”
Cheng Qiao nodded; she deeply understood this. Li Huan had suffered inhuman pain every day from the cold poison just to save her.
“Is your daughter’s biological mother a martyr as well? Was she part of our special department too?”
