“ Hantong, give me the child. Go make the campfire bigger and be careful. Don’t act rashly.”
Hantong nodded. Actually, she wasn’t afraid of the wolves alone; with her abilities, they wouldn’t necessarily outrun her. But now it was different—Cheng Qiao and the whole family were there.
Li Huan woke up as well. Cheng Qiao told him that Xiao Nuan had poured water on the fire, attracting the wolves. Only then did Li Huan realize that Xiao Nuan’s scolding was justified.
He had assumed there was no danger, but in reality, it was right beside them. They were just lucky—the wolves hadn’t dared to come out during the day.
“Take Xiao Nuan to your master. Be careful. I’ll deal with the wolves.”
“No, you take the shotgun and bring Xiao Nuan. I think the wolves are here for the water we poured.”
Li Huan nodded. That way, they only had to protect one tent. As they stepped out, they saw the green eyes surrounding them—there were quite a few.
“Qiao, don’t move yet. I’ll take Xiao Nuan over first.”
“Okay.”
Li Huan held the shotgun in one hand and carried his daughter to Ye Jun’s tent. Ye Jun was already dressed and held a silver needle—one wolf per needle. He had some confidence in that.
“Uncle, I’m handing Xiao Nuan to you. I’ll go check outside.”
Ye Jun nodded, admiring Li Huan’s calm demeanor. Cheng Qiao had indeed married well.
Li Huan raised the shotgun, Cheng Qiao held a torch, and they advanced, needing to get some distance from the tent. Cheng Qiao suddenly stopped, sensing someone communicating with her.
“Exchange spatial water for the Wolf King’s cub.”
The Qilin Resurrection Tree in the space suddenly gave Cheng Qiao a directive. Cheng Qiao realized the old tree might know the Wolf King’s intentions.
“You don’t follow me. I won’t be in danger.”
Hantong wanted to say something else, but Li Huan nodded. He knew Cheng Qiao could protect herself.
Cheng Qiao returned to the tent and emerged holding a large iron bucket full of spatial water.
“Can I exchange it for your son?”
Cheng Qiao placed the bucket on the ground, scanning for the Wolf King. She didn’t know which wolf it was. Luckily, the Wolf King appeared immediately, letting out a howl:
“Awwoo…”
“Old Tree, does this mean it agrees or not?”
“It agrees. Step back, or it won’t come. Extinguish the torch—wolves are suspicious and will think it’s a trap.”
Cheng Qiao doused the torch with spatial water. The heat dispersed the water’s scent farther and stronger. The Wolf King clearly grew anxious.
“I’ll leave the water here. Come alone—or rather, you, Wolf, come alone.”
Cheng Qiao stepped back. The Wolf King circled the pack and soon returned, holding a fluffy wolf cub in its mouth, cautiously approaching.
When it reached the bucket of spatial water, all its caution vanished. Its fierce eyes gleamed greedily.
It dropped the cub and began drinking the water in huge gulps. At first, it lifted its head occasionally to glance at Cheng Qiao; eventually, it buried its head fully in the bucket.
Half the bucket was gone quickly. The Wolf King hesitated, looking at Cheng Qiao. She understood—it wasn’t enough. Even if it drank its fill, the cub and the rest of the pack hadn’t.
“Step back. I’ll bring another bucket.”
The Wolf King stepped back as predicted. Cheng Qiao fetched another bucket of water, holding the cub in her arms and feeding it a health pill.
The cub initially struggled, but the pill immediately made it obedient. Its gaze toward Cheng Qiao softened—it recognized her as its mother, the one who fed it well.
The cub made happy little noises. The Qilin Resurrection Tree was pleased—this cub was a formidable ally. Cheng Qiao needed more such spiritual companions for protection.
Hearing its cub, the Wolf King was stunned. In such a short time, the cub had already recognized this woman as its mother—a real blow to its pride.
“Thank you. This is for you.”
A wellness pill flew toward the wolf king. With a single leap, the wolf king swallowed it whole. Feeling the surge of vitality within, the wolf king finally understood why his son had acted that way.
It glanced back at the rest of the pack. If it weren’t for you lot, I might have recognized this woman as the mother of my cub. What a pity.
The two buckets of water were completely drunk by the wolves, who then obediently followed the wolf king away. Hantong stood there, stunned, watching the scene. She raised her hand and viciously bit the back of it.
“Impossible… I must be dreaming. Cheng Qiao can actually communicate with wolves? And what kind of water is this that even wolves like it so much?”
When she released her bite, a metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. Hantong realized she wasn’t dreaming. She finally understood what Uncle Lata had said: spending time around Cheng Qiao would open up whole new worlds.
“Qiao, I didn’t see anything, I didn’t hear anything. Trust me—I swear on my ability that if I ever betray you, my powers will vanish immediately.”
“Alright, I trust you.”
The wolf cub in Cheng Qiao’s hands vanished instantly. She trusted Hantong’s oath; the heavens record the vows of those with abilities, and breaking one truly would strip them of their powers.
Hantong rubbed her eyes. Where did the cub go? I wanted to hold it… Li Huan smiled. He admired both Hantong and Uncle Lata. Being with them was always easier than being with ordinary people.
“Now we can sleep peacefully. No animals will bother us anymore.”
“Then I’ll sleep with Cheng Qiao; you go sleep with your son.”
Hantong didn’t hesitate to shoo Li Huan away. She had many questions for Cheng Qiao, and Cheng Qiao was happy to talk to her. She went to fetch the spy’s corpse.
“Hantong, I plan to dig a cellar near my mother’s siheyuan and bury the spy’s corpse there. When Li Huan needs it, we’ll come here.”
“That place works. No one will disturb us. I’ll arrange it; it’ll be done quickly.”
Hantong knew about this and hoped Li Huan would grow stronger. Then their team would gain another superpowered member like Uncle Lata.
The two whispered until midnight, and unconsciously, dawn broke. Ye Jing and Li Xiaonuan had very regular biological clocks and were already getting dressed.
“Mom, I had a dream last night… a pack of wolves came looking for us.”
Cheng Qiao froze. Could Xiaonuan have been awake last night? Ye Jun shook his head. He had been next to the children; they had slept like little pigs, definitely not awake.
