Li Huan finally finished his tasks for the day and headed to the school at the back. Just as he was about to enter, he saw Cheng Qiao and Zhu Qingde walking out.
“Qiao, are you done with your studies today?”
“Done. Let’s go to the store—today’s shipment has arrived, we need to check it.”
“Not sure if big brother went; haven’t seen what he’s been up to these past two days.”
“Oh, you’ve been busy with studies. I forgot to tell you—big brother went back with the transport team, so no need to switch vehicles on the road.”
“Got it, that works. Let’s go. We also need to see the plaque Dr. Zhu wrote—it looks great.”
Zhu Qingde blushed a little. He hadn’t written in a long time, and after practicing for two days, he finally wrote a few characters, which were then carved onto a wooden board as the store’s sign.
When Li Huan and Cheng Qiao saw Shouhou, they were momentarily stunned. Shouhou ran over excitedly and punched Li Huan in the chest: “Brother Huan, surprise…”
Li Huan returned a punch—but held back, or Shouhou wouldn’t have handled it. Still, it was strong enough to make him ache to the bone.
“Brother Huan, your strength increased again? Tonight’s chest will definitely be bruised.”
“No worries. My wife is a medic; she has medicine for this—won’t leave marks. By the way, why are you here? I wanted to call you. How’s it going over there? I’m still concerned.”
“Brother Huan, we’re going to get rich. Forget the wholesale market for now—the profits will double. The best part is transport. Did you know Uncle Zhao Hui opened a long-distance bus route from Chuncheng to Xiangyang County? The business is incredible.”
“Shut up! Zhao Hui is my wife’s uncle. I should call him uncle, not you. Why are you butting in?”
“Hey Brother Huan, I am calling you Brother Huan! You’re your brother, right? Your wife’s uncle is your uncle, so he’s my uncle too. What’s wrong with that?”
Li Huan laughed. This was his childhood friend—the brother he trusted.
“Is the business really that good?”
“Of course! Uncle is bold—he bought four buses at once, running twice a day, morning and noon. That old, broken long-distance bus is completely out of the market now.”
Li Huan nodded. With new buses, who would take the old ones that leaked and shook over little stones? Even if slightly more expensive, people would choose the new bus.
“Stop talking—let’s move the goods. This warehouse for food, that one for daily necessities. As for the counter, Lele has her own plan—we don’t need to worry.”
“Got it, Brother Huan. Don’t tell me—you bought this entire area? What are you planning to do with it?”
Seeing the high walls enclosing the area, Shouhou realized Li Huan and Cheng Qiao had bought the entire plot—but he had no idea what they intended.
“As you said, such a huge piece of land all belongs to my wife. We’re planning to start a family farm. Supplies here are scarce, especially meat and fruit—practically nonexistent—so running a farm will definitely be profitable.”
“Brother Huan, can you let me have a share?”
As soon as Shouhou heard this, he knew it was a good project. He immediately put his arm around Li Huan’s shoulder. But just as he did, he felt how icy-cool Li Huan’s body was—so comfortable in such hot weather.
“No, this is a business for my wife and me. We won’t cooperate with anyone.”
“Don’t you and your wife already have businesses in Chuncheng?”
“That’s for Li Ming.”
“And the herbal medicine shop in Beijing?”
“That’s for Nuannuan.”
“What about Cheng Li and Ye Jing?”
“Ye Jing has Ye Jun, no need for us to worry. Cheng Li has my father-in-law. My mother-in-law left him a lot of things; they’re his.”
Shouhou was impressed—this couple is clever. Ye Jun has no children and is a hospital director. There’s a huge siheyuan in Beijing, yet it all goes to Ye Jing.
And Cheng Li—well, Cheng Liguo was a deputy factory director, his wife Zhao Min comes from wealth, and with Zhao Hui being so rich, Zhao Min would have plenty too. So Cheng Li is definitely not worse off than Ye Jing.
“No wonder one of you is a Ye and the other a Cheng. You two really know how to plan. Amazing! Why don’t I have such a brilliant mentor and father-in-law?”
“That’s my blessing. You focus on your work; maybe in your next life it’ll be your turn. By the way, Qiu Min isn’t bad either—you can’t just let money make you forget her.”
Shouhou shook his head repeatedly. That’s impossible. Qiu Min married him when he was at his poorest. Now he has money, half of it is thanks to Qiu Min. He could never let her down.
“Wait, Brother Huan, you and my sister-in-law are starting a family farm, so why is Lele running a small shop?”
“It’s to let the little girl get some experience. Guoqing has a bright future, but every step forward needs support. We’re helping them now; when they grow, we can benefit later too.”
“Oh… Second Brother, no wonder you’re willing to help me. So that’s your plan! You’re so calculating. I guess I’ll just pay you rent every month.”
Li Le happened to pass by and overheard Li Huan and Shouhou. She set down what she was carrying, hands on her hips, her face full of displeasure.
“What’s the matter? Can’t let your man help Second Brother a bit? You haven’t even helped yet, and you’re already drawing boundaries? Fine, from today, I don’t want to see you again.”
“Second Sister-in-law, I didn’t mean that! I was joking with my brother. He wouldn’t really be angry, right?”
Seeing Li Huan’s expression darken, Li Le’s heart started pounding. Regardless of whether Guoqing had prospects, whenever Second Brother and Second Sister-in-law needed help, it was their duty to assist. She had just spoken carelessly.
“It’s fine. Your Second Brother was joking. And you can’t lift heavy things anymore. You’re such a grown girl, and you don’t even know you’re pregnant yet.”
“What? Pregnant? Second Sister-in-law, are you saying I’m pregnant?”
Cheng Qiao nodded. The pregnancy was still early, just over a month, but during this period she must be careful—not lift heavy things, not fall.
Li Le repeated Cheng Qiao’s words to herself, memorizing them. But looking at all the stock, she felt troubled. The shop was opening in a couple of days, yet she couldn’t work now.
“Second Sister-in-law, there’s so much stuff—what should I do?”
“It’s fine. We’re here, and Xiaoniu is too. At worst, we can hire another young girl as a sales clerk—just a few dozen yuan a month.”
“Okay, Second Sister-in-law, I’ll write a notice for a clerk to put on the door. Fifteen yuan a month, how’s that?”
“Alright, I’ll handle it. You go home and tell Mom, Guoqing, and your father-in-law. Let them be happy too.”
