Hearing Li Chen cry, Yuan Qin’s heart ached. This was the grandson she raised—no, his surname was Li, not Jiang, so Li Chen wasn’t really her grandson.
That fleeting tenderness was quickly replaced by resentment. Even Meili became an object of her hatred. If Meili hadn’t let Cheng Qiao secretly register the child, the child would have had the surname Jiang.
If not for the child being surnamed Li, she wouldn’t have risked her life to give birth to a “freak.” Everything was Cheng Qiao’s doing, so the person she hated most now was Cheng Qiao.
“Old Jiang, let me talk to Chengcheng. The child is terrified.”
Yuan Qin looked at Li Chen pitifully, struggling fiercely. Seeing Li Chen still crying and Li Ming unsure what to do, Jiang Hua finally released his grip.
Seeing Jiang Hua let go, Yuan Qin immediately ran toward Li Chen. Terrified, Li Chen screamed and tried to escape, but his legs felt weak.
Li Chen’s panic enraged Yuan Qin. Her anger spiraled out of control. She reached into her waistband, producing a sharp awl, and turned to stab toward Cheng Qiao’s neck.
Cheng Qiao smirked inwardly—she had been anticipating this woman. Having missed kicking her before, this time she would kick hard. If she didn’t break a few ribs, she wouldn’t be Cheng Qiao.
Yuan Qin lunged with the awl—so close! Just one stab and Cheng Qiao would be done for. Cheng Qiao, excited, prepared for the strike.
“Ah…”
Cheng Qiao’s leg shot out like lightning. Even so, Mother Li was knocked hard, and Yuan Qin’s shoemaking awl almost fully pierced Mother Li’s chest.
A flash of regret crossed Yuan Qin’s eyes. She glared at Mother Li. She had just been pretending to be crazy—if she had killed Cheng Qiao, the worst that would happen is being locked in a mental hospital.
Mother Li’s sudden appearance completely ruined her plan. Moreover, Mother Li was Meili’s mother-in-law—if Li Bing returned and divorced Meili, they wouldn’t get a penny.
Cheng Qiao, also startled by Mother Li’s sudden arrival, withdrew most of her force but still knocked Mother Li down. The awl pierced deeply into her body from both sides.
“Mom…”
“Grandma…”
“Father-in-law…”
Cheng Qiao, Cheng Liguo, and the children rushed over. Jiang Hua grabbed the stunned Yuan Qin and delivered a hard slap.
Yuan Qin seemed unfazed. She was reflecting, wondering why she hadn’t stabbed Cheng Qiao. Jiang Hua, now spitting blood twice, really worried her. She turned and supported him, asking what had happened.
Sister Zhang behind the service desk was scared stiff, her mouth open in shock. Only Ye Jun stepped forward, tapping the desk heavily with his bent index and middle fingers.
“You… you… what…”
“Call the police, or go to the station. Immediately!”
“Oh… oh… oh…”
Sister Zhang realized the lodge’s phone connected directly to the police. As soon as she picked up and dialed, the police would know something was wrong.
Soon, several police officers arrived, pedaling their bicycles, out of breath. They saw Mother Li lying flat on the floor and Jiang Hua with blood on his arm.
Also crying hysterically was Li Chen. Although Li Ming tried his best to comfort him, it had no effect—the child was terrified.
“Mom… I want Mom…”
No one could attend to him. Cheng Qiao first checked Mother Li’s pulse. The awl had actually pierced her heart, and she kept coughing up blood.
Cheng Qiao could have taken a Resurrection Pill from her space, but with Yuan Qin, Jiang Hua, Sister Zhang, and Li Chen present, she didn’t know what to do.
“Quick, give it to your mother-in-law.”
Ye Jun knew Cheng Qiao’s concern—she had to save the person while protecting herself, especially with Jiang Hua and Yuan Qin present. They were all outsiders in this scenario.
Cheng Qiao opened the rosewood box, revealing a golden pill. She crushed it and fed it to Mother Li.
Seeing the golden pill, Yuan Qin seemed to recall something. She lunged forward, trying to snatch the pill from Mother Li’s mouth.
The Resurrection Pill dissolved with moisture. Since Cheng Qiao had crushed it and fed it to Mother Li, its effects were already absorbed. Miraculously, Mother Li’s heart, pierced by the awl, slowly began to recover.
Cheng Qiao had originally intended to take advantage of the Rebirth Pill entering the body and directly pull out the awl, letting the pill’s medicinal effect quickly reach the rupture in the heart. Unexpectedly, Yuan Qin lunged at her again.
This time, Cheng Qiao really didn’t hold back. Without looking back, she delivered a side kick with such force that it sent Yuan Qin flying from the guesthouse all the way onto the street outside.
Several policemen quickly dodged, nearly getting swept along by Yuan Qin. Watching her fall in a parabolic trajectory, they all felt a pang of pain just imagining it.
The rough gravel tore Yuan Qin’s face and arms, and blood immediately gushed from the wounds. At the moment Cheng Qiao kicked Yuan Qin down, Ye Jun had already grabbed the awl and yanked it out with force.
Once the awl was pulled out, a spurt of blood erupted. Ye Jun didn’t even care that Mother Li was Mother Li—he tore open her clothes to expose the wound and poured a large amount of hemostatic powder on it.
Cheng Qiao’s hemostatic powder was real—blood dyed the first layer instantly. Ye Jun applied a second layer, which turned halfway red, but the bleeding had already stopped.
“Wow, Grandpa Ye’s medicine is amazing!”
Li Ming didn’t have time to worry about Li Chen either. His grandmother’s life was more important, so his first concern was Mother Li. Ye Jing rolled his eyes secretly—this third grandson was really foolish. That powder had been formulated by their mother.
Ye Jing looked at Cheng Qiao with admiration. He was determined to study traditional Chinese medicine properly and, in the future, become a medical sage like his grandfather and mother.
The policemen watched intently as Cheng Qiao and Ye Jun performed the emergency rescue, and saw how Cheng Qiao had kicked over the criminal. They exchanged glances and tacitly split into two teams.
One team went out to escort Yuan Qin to the police station, while the other stayed behind to monitor the situation, planning to gather more information when they had time.
Jiang Meili returned home after buying groceries, only to find the house empty. Because Jiang Hua had the day off, she had lingered a bit longer at the market, not expecting the house to be deserted.
It wasn’t until a neighbor came to knock on the door, urging her to go to the guesthouse, that her heart sank upon hearing the words “guesthouse.”
