His tongue had already started to stiffen, but Cheng Qiao still understood the meaning behind his words. A faint smile curved her lips—not because she wasn’t ruthless enough, but simply because she hadn’t gathered enough data yet.
“I can’t eat by myself. Feed me, and you can consider it doing a good deed for the day.”
“Cheng Qiao already covered you with a blanket; that counts as a good deed. Let me feed you some noodles too, and that’ll be another good deed.”
Hu Lata’s familiar voice sounded from behind. Both Cheng Qiao and the agent looked over. Cheng Qiao’s heart lifted with joy—Uncle Lata had successfully advanced.
The agent, however, felt a pang of regret. This guy had leveled up; if he hadn’t clashed with Cheng Qiao back then, maybe he could have received some help too.
Ah, no use thinking about it now—it was too late. The agent took a deep breath—but immediately regretted it. Breathing in only brought the cold air into his stomach, making him feel even colder.
Hu Lata had been just outside the woodshed a moment ago, yet in one step he was already at the bedside, smiling at the agent with the self-satisfied look of someone who’d just achieved something.
The agent widened his eyes. Although he had been poisoned by the Reed Blade Pill, his innate ability still allowed him to sense the difference in Hu Lata’s vitality. Sure enough, under the effect of Cheng Qiao’s medicine, Hu Lata’s ability had advanced.
Having not left his room for two days, Hu Lata felt the abundant flow of true energy throughout his body. The first thing he did upon opening the door was sense where Cheng Qiao was.
He arrived at the woodshed and saw Cheng Qiao dealing with the agent. A broad smile lifted his lips. He stepped in front of her, bent one knee, and half-kneeling, he showed the highest respect an ability user could offer another.
“Cheng Qiao, thank you for saving my life. And because of that pill you gave me, I’ve advanced despite my misfortune. I am truly grateful.”
Cheng Qiao was startled and hurried to support him, but Hu Lata was like a rooted tree; even her full strength had no effect.
Her heart filled with gratitude. If anyone had helped her more, it had been Uncle Lata. Otherwise, she would have been taken on the train, and little Cheng Li, who had been following her, might have been in mortal danger as well.
“Uncle Lata, please get up. I really can’t bear it otherwise. You’re also my lifesaver. On that train, without you, my son and I would have been done for.”
Hu Lata laughed heartily. His laughter not only hurt Cheng Qiao’s eardrums but also reverberated through the agent lying on the plank bed, causing pain deep in his already injured chest.
“I need to return to the capital soon and hand that guy over. How’s your experiment going?”
“It’s already taking effect, though we’re not sure how well yet.”
“Here, let me feed you.”
“Thank you. To think that I could be fed by Mr. Lata himself… I can die without regrets.”
The agent gave a miserable smile and opened his mouth. The noodles had cooled somewhat, but the warmth still reached his stomach, bringing relief to his entire body.
The night passed without incident. Early the next morning, with the sky just brightening, Cheng Qiao went to the woodshed. The agent opened his eyes and, seeing her enter, broke into a smile.
Cheng Qiao ignored him and immediately checked his pulse. Three minutes later, her expression darkened slightly. The agent’s pulse showed no signs of decline.
She personally fed him a steamed bun and gave him a sip of water before turning to leave. Just then, Hu Lata came out and, seeing Cheng Qiao, quickly spoke:
“Cheng Qiao, today I want to have Xiao Dan drive me to the capital and hand this guy over to the authorities. When I return, I’ll take you back to Hexi.”
Cheng Qiao nodded. But when Xiao Dan learned he was to drive Hu Lata to the capital, his face showed some hesitation—he had to drive to Spring City today, and tomorrow was the day for the little girl’s father, Chen Weidang, to receive visitors.
