“Cheng Qiao, go take a look inside that cave. This should be where they’re temporarily staying. If we could find that poison expert’s passport from yesterday, that would be perfect.”
Cheng Qiao suddenly understood. She glanced at Ye Xiaolin and sighed at how lucky he was. Ye Xiaolin gave her a puzzled look, sensing some unspoken meaning.
Cheng Qiao stepped into the cave. It was dry and tidy, with various kitchen utensils near the entrance. At the back of the cave were two foldable army cots, neatly covered with bedding.
The walls had several steel hooks hammered in, each holding a bag. Cheng Qiao carefully put on gloves and a mask before taking one of the bags down.
Opening it, she found a large amount of 10-yuan RMB bills, various receipts, coins from their own country, and most importantly, the neatly stacked passports of all four of them.
“Uncle Lata, is this the person?”
Cheng Qiao opened one of the passports and pointed to the photo.
“This is him,” she said.
Hu Lata saw Cheng Qiao take off her gloves and realized there was no poison on these items. He collected the passport and smiled at Ye Xiaolin:
“Ye Xiaolin, wait a few days before leaving. I’ll have someone make a human skin mask of this person so you can impersonate him.”
“Human skin mask…”
Ye Xiaolin finally understood why Cheng Qiao had been looking at him like that. He had been thinking about how to sneak into their group, but with a human skin mask, he could enter openly.
“Won’t anyone recognize me?”
Cheng Qiao looked concerned. Hu Lata chuckled. Superpowered people had a big advantage: when they weren’t on a mission, they almost never gathered together.
Especially the superpowered individuals from that country—they were extremely cautious. Even couples would use and guard against each other.
Cheng Qiao recalled how the agent had been tender with his wife one second and then used her corpse as a weapon the next. It was terrifying.
“Hey, Second Sister-in-law, what are you all doing?”
Outside, Xiao Dan saw the gray smoke slowly settling and finally spotted the people inside—some lying down, some sitting—and ran over.
“Oh, sorry! Is that big tiger outside still alive?”
Cheng Qiao remembered Xiao Dan. Hu Lata glanced at him and pointed to the place where the female agent’s body had disappeared: “Little comrade, clean up the battlefield. Don’t let anyone know someone died here.”
Xiao Dan was smart. He didn’t ask questions and immediately found a dead tree, broke off branches, and started cleaning. Soon, the snow pits were filled in.
“Uncle Lata, what should we do with this person?”
Xiao Dan looked at the still unconscious man, unsure what to do. Cheng Qiao had an idea and asked Hu Lata:
“Uncle Lata, take this person to my house for two days. I have a use for him.”
Hu Lata’s eyes flickered. Seeing Cheng Qiao suddenly disappear and reappear earlier, he wondered if she had prepared something new—maybe an experiment with this guy.
“Alright, I’ll follow your instructions. But don’t kill him; we still need to interrogate him to extract important information.”
Cheng Qiao nodded and looked at Xiao Dan. He quickly nodded, hoisted the agent, and headed down the mountain.
“Uncle Lata, I’ll carry you.”
Ye Xiaolin bent down, and Hu Lata didn’t refuse, climbing onto Ye Xiaolin’s back. The two followed Xiao Dan down the mountain.
Cheng Qiao inspected the scene again. Dust from the rocks had fallen into the snow and would be covered in a couple of days. By spring, no trace would remain.
She waved her hand slightly, and the wild animals killed by the shock were drawn into her space. She deliberately left two bears outside—one she carried down the mountain herself, the other for Xiao Dan to bring home.
The courtyard gate was still open. Xiao Dan casually dropped the agent in the backyard and was about to head back up the mountain, still thinking about the tiger and bear.
Seeing Cheng Qiao carrying a bear behind him shocked him at first, but considering her skills, he calmly accepted it.
“Second Sister-in-law, there’s still a tiger and a bear up there. I’ll go get them.”
“The tiger is gone. Bring down the bear and hide it in the backyard. Take it home when you leave.”
Xiao Dan’s face lit up. Under the sunlight, his slightly dark and red face seemed to glow. A whole bear—he’d have meat and money for his marriage, and his parents could even make a mattress from its skin.
Wang Xiangyang ran out at the noise. He didn’t know Hu Lata or the agent, but seeing how differently the injured were treated, he understood the secret.
“Xiangyang, burn up the big kang in the opposite room and boil some water while you’re at it.”
Hu Lata was filthy and wounded. Dried blood had frozen at the corner of his mouth. His hat had been knocked off, revealing uneven hair that clearly looked self-cut—ugly as ever.
Wang Xiangyang ran to the woodshed, grateful he had helped Brother Huan collect firewood. Otherwise, there wouldn’t have been enough.
“Uncle Lata, do you want me to change you into Li Huan’s clothes? It’s uncomfortable sleeping like this.”
Hu Lata’s nose twitched. He smelled something unusual and smiled slyly at Cheng Qiao. He could bathe—but only with water like Li Huan’s.
Cheng Qiao marveled at his sensitivity. Being a superpowered person, he had great skills. She fetched a large wooden tub from the yard, cleaned it, and placed it in the opposite room, then went to the kitchen to boil water.
Buckets of hot water were poured into the tub. Seeing it was half full, Hu Lata hurriedly got out before it overflowed.
“Xiaolin, make sure to watch Uncle Lata. Don’t leave his side during this time.”
Ye Xiaolin nodded immediately. Another superpowered person was in the courtyard. If the “immortal binding rope” turned out to be exaggerated, no one would escape.
After burning the kang, Wang Xiangyang stood by the bear and saw a dozen wild chickens, rabbits, and roe deer in the corner. His emotions were mixed—this was the skill of Cheng Qiao and the soldiers, something he could never do.
“Xiangyang, have someone handle these.”
Wang Xiangyang was stunned. Handle them himself? Did Cheng Qiao and the others not want these animals?
“These are still valuable—bear paws, bear gallbladders, and bear skins. It’s also compensation for the damage to Xiangyang Village’s fields.”
“Cheng Qiao, thank you. I feel like I’m not fit to be a village chief. I just don’t have the ability.”
“Nonsense. You just lack experience. Time will fix that.”
Wang Xiangyang suddenly missed Chen Weidang. If he were here, Brother Huan wouldn’t have been troubled or injured.
