When Xi Yuechen received Shen Liang’s call, he was at the training ground, drilling the troops.
Ever since Su Ruo became pregnant, Xi Yuechen had developed a habit: he carried his phone with him at all times, practically glued to his side, in case something happened to Su Ruo and he couldn’t be reached.
Yet the phone had remained silent all this time, never interrupting his work—until today, when it finally proved its purpose.
The moment he heard the ringtone, Xi Yuechen’s heart skipped a beat, sensing that something was about to happen.
Sure enough, as soon as he answered, he didn’t even have time to call out “Mom” before Shen Liang’s urgent voice left him pale with shock.
Li Lizhen, standing nearby, noticed Xi Yuechen’s expression and was taken aback. What could have happened to make him look like that?
Before he could continue observing, Xi Yuechen hung up, shoved the phone into his pocket, and, with a look of alert urgency mixed with panic, strode off without even glancing at Li Lizhen.
“There’s something at home. I have to go.”
That was all Xi Yuechen said before disappearing from sight.
“What’s going on that he’s in such a rush?”
Li Lizhen knew he wouldn’t be held back and didn’t try to stop him or demand an explanation. He could only shake his head and mutter to himself.
Xi Yuechen drove at top speed, his expression growing more anxious by the minute, and he felt a pang of regret.
If only he had stayed at Zhengjia Courtyard last night, he could have been with the little woman today and wouldn’t have… once again, not been by her side when she gave birth.
For the first time, the drive home felt unbearably long. Even driving fast, the road seemed endless, stirring his frustration and self-reproach.
Unavoidably, Xi Yuechen recalled Su Ruo’s experience when she had given birth to Xi Zi. Cold sweat immediately broke out across his palms, and his heart clenched painfully.
Xi Yuechen, who could remain calm even under a mountain of pressure, was now burning with anxiety, his usual composure nowhere to be found. Even his breathing was irregular.
Fortunately, Shen Liang called him again.
A mother knows her child best. After calling Xi Yuechen, Shen Liang suddenly remembered to call again.
She wasn’t unaware of how tense her son had been since Su Ruo’s pregnancy—how cautious he’d become, aware of the shadow cast by Xi Zi’s birth. It was both exasperating and slightly amusing.
Clearly, the only person who could provoke such a strong reaction from him was Ruo Ruo herself. Look at him now—like a bird startled by a bowstring, all his usual calm gone.
But that’s normal. Joy, anger, sadness, and happiness are meant to be expressed—bottling them up only makes things worse.
After quietly scolding her son for overreacting, she couldn’t resist calling again, this time reassuring him: Su Ruo was fine, attended by authoritative doctors, and the baby was healthy. Everything was well. She told him to drive carefully and not to rush.
After hanging up, Xi Yuechen let out a long sigh. His face relaxed slightly, though he didn’t slow the car. The chaotic thoughts racing through his mind were gone.
It’ll be fine. It must be fine.
This labor was slow—so slow that even when Xi Yuechen arrived at the hospital, she still hadn’t given birth.
Not only that, Su Ruo hadn’t even entered the delivery room yet. She was having contractions, but there were no signs of actual delivery.
By coincidence, as Xi Yuechen entered the ward, he barely had time to speak when Su Ruo turned to him and suddenly cried out in pain.
Xi Yuechen staggered, nearly losing his balance. Su Ruo’s face twisted in agony, her eyes shut tight. Heartbroken and panicked, he ran almost blindly toward her.
Before he could reach her, a doctor shouted, “It’s time! Clear the way! To the delivery room!”
The scene instantly descended into chaos. The nervous crowd affected the doctors too.
Even though this was a routine birth, two highly experienced doctors had to exercise extreme caution, as if life itself hung in the balance.
Xi Yuechen wanted to follow them into the delivery room. Seeing Su Ruo in such pain, he felt every fiber of his body tense like iron. Watching her being pushed toward the room, he couldn’t relax.
He couldn’t do anything, but he at least wanted to be there, to see both mother and child safe, to witness everything with his own eyes…
Yet, in the end, he couldn’t enter the delivery room. And it wasn’t because of Shen Liang or the doctors—it was because of Su Ruo.
Even amid excruciating pain, Su Ruo thought: if the commander saw her in this state, he’d be terrified. Besides, if he were there, she wouldn’t dare cry out for fear of worrying him. That wouldn’t work at all.
So, she decided to endure the pain alone. It was a woman’s duty, after all.
Su Ruo quietly made light of the situation, trying to ease her own tension.
Outside the delivery room, the scene was grand—truly remarkable. Both the Xi and Su families were present, not to mention He Wen, Duan Wei, and their families. Even the hospital director stood among them.
Don’t ask why—the director’s feelings were complicated. Could he sit leisurely in his office when such a high-ranking leader was present?
So, he too stayed, waiting for mother and child to be safe. To be honest, standing there, the director in his fifties felt a sense of pride.
After all, it wasn’t every day you stood beside such a leader. Even waiting for someone unrelated to be treated for a cold would feel important.
Xi Yuechen stood in front of the delivery room, brow furrowed, lips pale, fists slightly trembling—so tense and worried that it was visible on his face.
Suddenly, a small, warm, delicate hand grasped his. Looking down instinctively, he saw Xi Zi standing beside him, holding his hand, looking up at him.
“Daddy, Mommy will be fine. Don’t worry.”
Xi Zi’s young voice was soft. He was visibly anxious, but seeing his usually strong father so afraid, he couldn’t help but offer comfort.
He knew Mommy would be fine—she was just having a little brother or sister. He didn’t need to be afraid.
Shen Liang had explained this to Xi Zi. A five-year-old, no matter how smart, takes adults at their word, never imagining the pain behind it.
But seeing everyone so nervous, and remembering Su Ruo entering the delivery room, Xi Zi couldn’t help but become tense himself—especially seeing his father like that.
“Mm, she’ll be fine.”
Xi Yuechen relaxed his fists, took Xi Zi’s small hand in his, forced a smile, and replied hoarsely. Then he quietly waited for news from inside.
Some time later, the delivery room door finally opened, and a young nurse walked out, smiling brightly.
“Congratulations! Mother and child are safe. It’s a little princess.”
