Xi Yuechen didn’t speak many sweet words, but every single one of them could overwhelm Su Ruo with emotions, leaving her utterly moved. Right now, she was hopelessly on the verge of tears.
“Commander…”
Su Ruo looked at Xi Yuechen with reddened eyes, a faint glimmer of tears shining within them. Her voice choked slightly. After saying “Commander,” she couldn’t speak another word.
Xi Yuechen hated seeing Su Ruo cry more than anything. Every tear she shed felt like a scorching warmth falling directly into his heart, stirring a subtle pain.
But this time, it was different. Perhaps he sensed that Su Ruo wasn’t sad at all. He lightly curved his lips and reached out to pull her into a hug, leaning close to her ear and whispering with a smile, “Still crying at your age?”
Su Ruo’s eyes widened in surprise. Normally, Xi Yuechen didn’t make such intimate gestures with her, and hugs like this were extremely rare. Now, with his head resting on her shoulder, the warm breath from his words brushed against her ear, coloring the edge of her ear red. His voice was soft and gentle, like a tender murmur.
“I only cry in front of you. No one else would even get to see it.”
Su Ruo rested her head against his shoulder, pretending to argue. She thought to herself, “Even if I’m old, I’ll still cry—let’s see what you’ll do about it.” Despite this defiance in her mind, the corner of her mouth couldn’t help but curl into a smile.
Xi Yuechen didn’t argue. He continued smiling, thinking, “Good, she only cries in front of me. At least she won’t bear any grievances anywhere else.”
“By the way,” Su Ruo said after calming down, remembering something from earlier, smiling, “we’ll probably be attending a wedding soon.”
Xi Yuechen’s gentle reassurance immediately cleared away her lingering gloom. She didn’t think about Mò Qí at all. After all, Mò Qí was just a passerby in her life. For her, Lù Yuè was far more important.
Duàn Wēi was now together with Lù Yuè. It was truly a perfect match made in heaven. Mò Qí didn’t need to intrude. She had every reason to be happy: the people around her were settled, and her future would only get better.
She was fortunate. And her friends and family were finally receiving their share of happiness from fate, weren’t they?
“That’s good. We’ll go together when the time comes.”
Xi Yuechen didn’t ask whose wedding it was. He simply promised to go with Su Ruo. Who the wedding belonged to didn’t concern him. If it weren’t for his wife’s friends, he probably wouldn’t even want to hear about it. He never liked crowded places, especially bustling events like weddings.
What mattered was Su Ruo’s happiness, and he was more than willing to accompany her.
“You’re not even asking whose it is?” Su Ruo pouted in dissatisfaction.
“Doesn’t matter. They’re all your friends anyway.”
Xi Yuechen answered lightly and let go of her.
Su Ruo tilted her head to look at him. She noticed a faint sparkle in his eyes, maybe from the lights outside, softening the lines of his face.
He looked just like Xí Zi!
The thought suddenly crossed her mind. In this moment, Xi Yuechen resembled Xí Zi even more—especially in his eyes.
“Alright, it’s the same to you anyway.”
Su Ruo shrugged gracefully. She knew Xi Yuechen’s approach to life was naturally detached, so she didn’t press further.
“Let’s go home soon. If we don’t, they’ll start worrying.”
Su Ruo began to worry about her son. Time had flown, and she didn’t know if Xí Zi had cried.
Hearing this, Xi Yuechen realized they had left their son home all afternoon. He nodded and started the car, a hint of concern showing.
When they arrived home, it was already around 9:30 PM. Xí Zi was long asleep, the elders had gone to bed, and Zhāng Huáqīng and Su Héng had already left. The living room only had Shěn Liáng and Xí Jiàn’ān—one watching TV, the other reading the newspaper. It looked warm and harmonious.
“Dad, Mom.”
After entering, Su Ruo and Xi Yuechen greeted them.
“Back already? Did you have fun?”
Shěn Liáng had looked toward the door when it opened. Now she nodded and smiled as she asked.
“Yes, it’s been a long time since we saw them. We chatted all afternoon—very happy.” Su Ruo’s cheerful voice reflected her good mood.
“That’s good. Maybe we can get together again tomorrow.”
Seeing Su Ruo happy, Shěn Liáng was pleased too. She knew these kids had grown up together and shared a strong bond, so she suggested another gathering.
Su Ruo shook her head. “No, maybe next time. Tomorrow, I’ll stay home with Grandpa and Mom. We’ll leave in the afternoon.”
Going out immediately after coming home had already been enough. If they went out again tomorrow, what kind of impression would that give? She needed to make time for her family; otherwise, her in-laws might feel neglected.
Friends and family were both important; she couldn’t ignore either.
Su Ruo understood this perfectly, so she immediately refused. All the people she wanted to see and all the things she wanted to say had been taken care of. Tomorrow, she’d stay home and spend time with her family, entertaining her son.
Shěn Liáng immediately smiled brightly. “Don’t let it interfere with your plans, right?”
“Of course not. What plans could I possibly have?” Su Ruo smiled, touched by Shěn Liáng’s obvious happiness. Sometimes, family’s expectations were so simple: just follow them, and they were happier than anything else.
“That’s good, that’s good. Tomorrow, the two of us will have a proper chat.”
Shěn Liáng held Su Ruo’s hand and patted it gently. She genuinely hoped Su Ruo would stay home with her. They hadn’t seen each other in a while, and she missed her terribly. Ever since Su Ruo learned to walk, she hadn’t been apart from her for such a long time. But she didn’t want to disturb Su Ruo’s fun—after all, meeting friends after so long would definitely be more interesting than staying with an old lady. So Shěn Liáng never suggested that she stay.
Young people liked to go out.
Su Ruo, however, was thoughtful and considerate. Shěn Liáng couldn’t help but feel happy. How many kids were so understanding and considerate? Looking at others’ children, there weren’t many who were so filial at such a young age.
On Xí Jiàn’ān’s side, Xi Yuechen had already joined Su Ruo and sat beside him. Xí Jiàn’ān stopped reading the newspaper and chatted casually with his eldest son about military matters.
Su Ruo asked about Xí Zi’s behavior that afternoon. Shěn Liáng’s face lit up even more at the mention of her grandson. She said he was obedient, didn’t fuss, and was especially lovable. If he was hungry, he drank milk without looking for his mother.
Hearing her son was so well-behaved reassured Su Ruo, and she felt a quiet pride. Of course her son was obedient; she never had to worry.
Little did she know, Xí Zi had always been obedient. Growing up, he was even more self-sufficient. Everything he needed to do was already planned in his mind. Su Ruo would regret her lack of influence over him for a lifetime. For her son, the only thing she had done that mattered was giving birth to him; everything else was out of her hands. What a frustrating son!
After chatting a while longer, Shěn Liáng and Xí Jiàn’ān went to rest. Su Ruo and Xi Yuechen went upstairs.
Shěn Liáng and Xí Jiàn’ān stayed in the living room only to wait for them. Once they arrived and conversations ended, it was natural to go to bed.
“Commander, shall we come home more often from now on?”
Su Ruo rolled into Xi Yuechen’s arms as he finished his shower and lay down. She lifted her head to look at him.
After talking with Shěn Liáng tonight, Su Ruo felt a lot. With Xí Yuèhuī away and the elders growing older, she realized the importance of family gatherings. Even though her grandfather seemed vigorous, no one could guarantee that old age would go smoothly.
The elderly might spend their days tending flowers, feeding birds, or playing chess, but they surely wanted a lively and warm home. With only her grandparents and in-laws at home, the grandfather might feel quite lonely.
So, even if she had to be busy, she couldn’t neglect her family. She wanted Xí Zi to grow close to his grandparents to avoid future regrets.
“What’s on your mind?” Xi Yuechen asked, surprised by Su Ruo’s sudden thought.
“I just think, as a young and outstanding person of the new century, I can’t just seek my own enjoyment. I have to consider the bigger picture and the happiness of everyone. How could I leave everyone behind and only have fun myself? After all, I’ve had a higher education. While we’re away, Mom, Dad, and Grandpa must miss Xí Zi terribly.”
Su Ruo nudged Xi Yuechen’s chest, smiling, her warm breath making him feel a fleeting tickle.
“Alright, we’ll come back together.”
Xi Yuechen was silent for a moment before answering in a deep voice. He wasn’t stupid—Su Ruo’s semi-joking words made perfect sense to him. His heart warmed, and he tightened his embrace, feeling a subtle, growing emotion.
Led by his wife to fulfill filial duties, Xi Yuechen didn’t feel embarrassed. He felt some guilt, realizing that for years he had focused only on the military, rarely returning home. Shěn Liáng would always ask when he would come home. Even Xí Jiàn’ān would inquire during the few calls he made.
Xi Yuechen had always been emotionally slow, never noticing the family’s longing. Not going home for an entire year was normal to him; he never thought about their care.
Now, with Su Ruo’s words, he finally realized. His heart stirred with emotion and a touch of sorrow. He thought, in his lifetime, he’d inevitably disappoint his loved ones—but thankfully, he still had this little woman by his side.
He had never known how to manage relationships. Since that was the case, he would simply obey his little woman. He just needed to follow her lead, avoiding his own clumsiness from ruining anything important.
