Today was Saturday. Xi Yuechen didn’t have much work to deal with, so Su Ruo planned to go back home with him for one night. It had been a long time since they’d gone back—his parents must miss Xi Zi terribly.
Early in the morning, Su Ruo rolled out of bed, washed up, and began carefully getting herself ready. When it came to choosing what to wear, she stood in front of the wardrobe for a long time, hesitating. It had been quite a while since she last went home; no matter what, she wanted to have both herself and Xi Zi looking neat and spirited, so everyone could feel reassured when they saw them.
After so long living as a military dependent, she hadn’t been flustered or overwhelmed, right? She and Xi Zi were still bright and presentable, weren’t they? So really, this environment suited her just fine—everyone could stop worrying already.
While Su Ruo was busy putting on her makeup, Xi Yuechen watched the bustling little woman and, very consciously, headed into the kitchen to calmly prepare breakfast.
“Chief!”
Xi Yuechen was reheating buns when he heard Su Ruo shout.
“What is it?”
“Come here for a moment—help me out,” Su Ruo called again.
Xi Yuechen immediately finished what he was doing, turned around, and strode quickly toward the bedroom, not knowing what could have made the little woman so urgent.
But once he entered the bedroom, he realized his worry was completely unnecessary.
“Chief, help me take a look—what do you think I should wear?”
Hearing him come in, Su Ruo poked her head out from the wardrobe, her face full of distress as she asked.
For a moment, Xi Yuechen was speechless. A few invisible black lines slid down his forehead.
Ask him about clothes? He had always known that his little woman looked beautiful in what she wore—but he had never paid attention to how outfits were matched, okay?
Really, Su Ruo was grasping at straws. What could Xi Yuechen possibly know? He spent all day with a bunch of grown men; the only woman he had close contact with was Su Ruo. When he went out, he never let his eyes wander—he didn’t look at the flamboyantly dressed women on the street, much less study women’s fashion.
To him, his little wife was perfect in every way—pretty face, great figure—so naturally she looked good in anything. In his memory, she had stunned him more than once when she dressed up, but she had never once looked bad.
What on earth was his little woman thinking, dragging him over here to ask which outfit looked better?
So Su Ruo’s question was destined to go nowhere.
“They’re all fine. Pick any one,” Xi Yuechen replied in a low voice, then turned to head back to the kitchen to continue with breakfast.
But how could Su Ruo be satisfied with that perfunctory attitude? She called out unhappily, “Chief.”
Xi Yuechen stopped helplessly, turned back to look at her, question written all over his face—clearly asking what else was wrong.
Su Ruo was exasperated. “At least come over and look properly. Give me some advice!”
They always said a woman’s wardrobe was forever missing one piece of clothing. With so many clothes, Su Ruo genuinely couldn’t decide which one would be best.
Since she couldn’t make up her own mind, she had no choice but to ask for help—and in this house, the only person she could ask was Xi Yuechen.
Seeing his little wife pouting in dissatisfaction, Xi Yuechen had no choice but to walk over to the wardrobe and look at the entire row of her clothes.
Faced with the array of styles and colors, his head started to ache. How had he never noticed before that his little woman owned this many clothes?
Now he was supposed to pick one out from all of these? Xi Yuechen felt that a ten-kilometer weighted cross-country run would be far more refreshing.
“They’re all fine.”
After a moment of silence, Xi Yuechen turned to Su Ruo, who was looking at him expectantly, and said expressionlessly.
…Su Ruo’s face darkened.
“I’m asking you to pick one for me! Which do you think looks best?” she persisted, continuing her gentle coaxing.
But how could Xi Yuechen possibly be someone with that much flair? He decisively shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Su Ruo deflated and glared at him unhappily. “Don’t you have any sense at all of which outfit looks better on me?”
She thought to herself that if he really said yes today, she absolutely wouldn’t let it go easily. Didn’t he know that a woman dresses to please the one she loves? The reason she wanted to look her best in front of him, to dress up carefully, was so he’d find her pleasing to look at, so she’d look good when he took her out—not for anyone else.
This time, however, Xi Yuechen was unexpectedly on point. Without a second thought, he answered, “They’re all beautiful.”
Yes—no matter what Su Ruo wore, she was the most beautiful in Xi Yuechen’s eyes. Of course… not wearing anything was also quite enchanting. Ahem.
“Honestly, calling a blockhead like you over to give advice—I really asked for it,” Su Ruo sighed, pressing her hand to her forehead. Then she waved dismissively without even looking at him, signaling that he could leave.
“You can go, you can go. I don’t need you anymore.”
Seeing how she discarded him without hesitation, Xi Yuechen’s gaze darkened slightly, his lips pressed tightly together. But two seconds later, he obediently walked out.
Breakfast wasn’t ready yet, and the drive was long. The little woman needed to eat something, or she’d get hungry.
In the end, Xi Yuechen once again surrendered to reason and quietly went back to his work. In front of Su Ruo, all his emotions arose because of her, and all his rationality existed for her sake as well.
After chasing Xi Yuechen away, Su Ruo stared at the wardrobe full of clothes and let out a long, leisurely sigh. She really did have decision-making difficulties.
By the time Xi Yuechen came in to call her for breakfast, Su Ruo had finally—painfully—decided what to wear. She drooped her head and went to the dining room to eat Xi Yuechen’s loving breakfast.
Looking at Su Ruo’s already finished, delicate makeup, Xi Yuechen thought to himself: no wonder she’d been so torn—there really was quite a difference. She had indeed become much prettier. (Chief Xi, hadn’t you noticed the difference between your wife with and without makeup before?)
But…
Xi Yuechen looked at Su Ruo’s refined, almost ethereal face—paired with a deeply aggrieved expression, messy hair, stuffing buns into her mouth and gulping down soy milk—and the fact that she was still wearing pajamas…
No matter how he looked at it, the whole scene felt strangely mismatched.
Captain Xi calmly withdrew his gaze and began to eat breakfast with elegant movements. Compared to a certain someone who was only focused on eating with her head down… the contrast was more than just one level apart.
“Eat more slowly,” Xi Yuechen finally couldn’t help but remind her as he listened to her gulping sounds.
Careful not to choke.
Su Ruo swallowed the bun in her mouth and let out a long breath. “Speed is efficiency! I still haven’t fed Xi Zi yet. I’m done—help clean up a bit, okay? Otherwise, if we’re late, we’ll miss the meal time.”
She had calculated it perfectly: if they set off a little after eight, they’d arrive at Zhengjia Courtyard right at lunchtime—perfect timing to eat.
Watching Su Ruo rushing around, Xi Yuechen couldn’t help frowning. “Slow down. There’s no rush.”
“Mm, no rush, no rush,” Su Ruo replied agreeably.
But as soon as she said that, she had already dashed into the bedroom, leaving Xi Yuechen staring helplessly in that direction.
So frantic—what if she bumped into something?
After that, everything went smoothly. Su Ruo fed Xi Zi, laid him on the bed, quickly changed her clothes, tidied her hair, and once she felt refreshed, went to change Xi Zi’s clothes.
As for Xi Zi’s daily necessities, she had prepared them the night before—now she could just grab them and go.
“Son, we’re going home to see Grandpa and Grandma,” Su Ruo said with a smile, kissing the fully ready Xi Zi. “You miss them too, don’t you?”
At that moment, Xi Yuechen also came into the bedroom and asked, looking at the big and small pair on the bed, “All set?”
“All set. Let’s go.”
Su Ruo got off the bed, picked up the two bags, and smiled with pursed lips, signaling for him to hold Xi Zi.
Xi Yuechen chuckled softly and went over to pick up Xi Zi. He didn’t have much to pack—once he’d gotten up and changed clothes in the morning, he was basically done. Not like Su Ruo, hesitating and fussing over everything.
And so, the family of three happily set off on their journey home.
On the road, Su Ruo held Xi Zi. After Xi Zi fell asleep, she got a bit bored. She fiddled with the music for a while, played on her phone for a bit, and in less than an hour, she started feeling drowsy—there really wasn’t much to pass the time.
Xi Yuechen was fully focused on driving. He only answered when asked; otherwise, he was as silent as a mute. Su Ruo didn’t disturb him—he was always like this. Usually he didn’t talk much, and once he focused on something, nothing else existed. The fact that he’d respond to her at all was already generous.
She switched to some soft instrumental music, tilted her head—and before long, she was asleep, so fast it was astonishing.
It was only after a while that Xi Yuechen realized Su Ruo had fallen asleep. Looking at the mother and son sleeping soundly, he couldn’t help feeling both amused and helpless.
He pulled the car over to the roadside, lowered the music volume, adjusted the air conditioning, then placed two soft cushions on his lap. Only then did he gently lift the sleeping Xi Zi and place him on his own legs, carefully supporting him with one hand. With the other hand, he started the car again and drove one-handed.
He was worried that Xi Zi would press against the sleeping Su Ruo. If she was going to sleep, she should sleep comfortably. And so Captain Xi—normally meticulous, serious, and cautious—once again broke his own rules, performing the dangerous act of holding a baby with one hand while driving with the other.
Thankfully, his driving skills were excellent and the road was flat and straight. Otherwise, a moment of carelessness could easily have caused an accident.
Once they got onto the highway, he couldn’t continue such a high-difficulty maneuver, so he spoke up to wake Su Ruo.
Su Ruo groggily opened her eyes, utterly disoriented, blinking her wide eyes a couple of times before she gradually came to.
“We’re on the highway already?”
Seeing the road ahead clearly, she widened her eyes in surprise.
Before Xi Yuechen could answer, she suddenly realized something was wrong with her now-empty arms.
“Where’s Xi Zi?!”
Seeing her panicked expression, Xi Yuechen couldn’t help laughing. His eyes curved slightly as he coughed and said, “Here.”
Only then did Su Ruo turn to look at him—and froze when she realized the high-difficulty posture in which her precious baby was being held by his father.
…Awkward.
Su Ruo felt rather embarrassed. She gave a dry laugh and quickly took her son back into her arms. Even the slowest person would understand now—Xi Yuechen had held Xi Zi so she could sleep properly, then driven in that extremely awkward position.
“Chief, that must’ve been exhausting, right?” Su Ruo asked guiltily. If she’d known, she wouldn’t have slept. Who would’ve thought her blockheaded man could be this considerate?
“No, it was fine,” Xi Yuechen replied calmly, both hands on the steering wheel, eyes fixed straight ahead.
Su Ruo eyed him suspiciously, then laughed quietly to herself. This really was the all-capable, attentively considerate type—very nice, very nice indeed.
